2:38 It's funny calling out the Stoic Beauty stereotype, because apparently Chinese actresses are slaves to it. Their ideal is the Cold Beauty, and comedy is the death of that image. Apparently, Gong Li turned down a role in a Stephen Chow movie (maker of Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer), because it would ruin her cool beauty image, so an older actress got the role, allowed to stretch her acting chops, and revitalized her career. This stoic ideal for acting, that comedy is somehow the death of actual acting ability, seems to infest the mindset of Awards Season.

Most Hollywood Studios and casting directors really have no standards. It’s like.” oh she’s attractive and she had one good movie?” “ then let’s hire her for this role.” no standards.
It's just name recognition, dude. If the actor is recognizable by the general public then the studio knows that casting that actor will be enough to sell tickets to a certain amount of people. Most of these movies are for people that will just go see the latest Rock/Kevin Hart/Jack Black movie just because they know and like that actor. The audience's standards are what sets the bar; the studios will just keep making slop as long as slop continues to sell tickets.
Gal Gadot: I'm hot but I have a personality too. No , no you don't. Kevin Hart: I'm short. And? Rock: I'm not even trying too play the same character I just am cause I have no talent but don't know it. Jack Black: I've been, somehow coasting off " School of Rock" for over 20 years now
You are right that Jack black just plays himself. But unlike the other 3 horse man. He owns up to it, he doesn't try to pretend to be something else. This video is about 4 horseman but only 3 of them are pretentious.
You know he at least used to be an unironically good actor when he could take the generally nonsensical premise of School of Rock and make one of the best comedies of the 2000s out of it.

As few people below pointed out, Jack Black is an anomaly of these 4 horsemen. In recent times his work makes you feel like he deserves to be part of the horsemen, however if you look at his whole career, he's much better than this. School of Rock, King Kong, Kung Fu Panda..nah man I don't see Kevin Hart doing a comedy like School of Rock or The Rock puling of a Carl Dengam. The Rock: Same character in every movie Black Jack: Music man in every movie Gal Gadot: Committed several war crimes, also bland in every movie Kevin Heart: Comedic black guy in every movie
i've formed this nitpick with Zendaya simply 'cause after she lucked out on fame EVERYONE tries to put her in for reasons unknown. Zendaya turned me away because she is "anti male-gaze" and pro-DEI like Rachel Zegler and Halle Bailey. Zendaya is a pretty woman, but she DGAF about how raggedy she sometimes looks in public. Even in movies, her MCU depiction of MJ is like watching a female version of Paul Rabin, and she came off as someone's bland and annoying self-insert. Peter Parker would never be into girls like that, Spidey only prefers hotties and Disney HATES that. Then she crossed the line for ruining Lola Bunny for everyone. On the other hand, Fast and furious is the exact embodiment of the apocalypse, except you replace Jack Black with Ryan Reynolds and his eternal irony-filled acting face. He may be Deadpool but speaking of horsemen, he would be the Apocalypse mutant of the group.
I really don’t like watching mainstream actors because you can only get so much out of the movies that they keep getting assigned with. It’s very little with what you’re working with for the experience. I still cannot believe that Gal Gadot got a star first, before Brad Pitt! LIKE HOW?! 😭
I unironically think that all of them have at least one really good movie. The Rock has Faster, Jack Black has Kings of Rock, Gal Gadot has the first Wonder Woman and Kevin Hart has The Upside.
Even in bad movies Jack is one of the few that still tries to do his job, even thought his acting range is not particularly wide, he is a fair craftsman. As for Rock, well, I only liked his Jungle Cruise so far, the rest was pretty meh. Don`t remember much about Kevin Hart or Gal Gadot, so can`t confirm or deny if they are good or bad actors.
Lmao no amount of justification for Gal Gadot's wonder woman would make her good at acting she's average, and she's Israeli in an industry owned by Israel with almost half of them if not all being one so that gives her privileges beyond what a normal Hollywood actor/actress could dream of getting don't lie to yourselves by saying she's at least good looking she's not

The rock makes me wonder, what the hell happened to action heroes, arnold, sylvester stallone, chuck norris, you could go on and on about the badasses of the past, countless iconic roles that were so vastly different, from killer time traveling robots, to professional boxing, to even the "generic" military dude who fucks shit up, they all were so good, fast forward and we just get, the Rock....like really?
Honestly I couldn’t even tell you his character’s names. They’re all interchangeable! That’s how you know he’s not as memorable as Arnold, Stallone, etc. The Rock’s films aren’t even quotable!
Seriously though, Arnold was the only good one, and he had range. Kindergarten Cop and Last Action Hero, along with Total Recall, Terminator and Conan? Sly was _never_ good beyond First Blood and Rocky (1), and Chuck Norris was always a charisma vacuum. A lot of the latter two's success was really just that action movies were at a high, and those guys were just in them.
There are a lot of people who watch movies and don't really care about how good the acting is and really don't have a discerning critical eye for the craft of filmmaking. They want something starring an actor they recognize and has all the story tropes they're familiar with and enough action scenes to keep them entertained for a couple hours. These movies are like McDonald's. Everyone knows exactly what it's going to taste like when they go to McDonald's, just like everyone knows exactly what they're going to get when they see a movie starring the Rock.
All these except Gal Gadot, you made some really good points but she's much better than the other three, Awkwafina or Will Smith would have been more fitting
I just can't enjoy most movies with the Rock in them after learning that his contract doesn't let him lose any fights.
That becoming public knowledge is the start of the decline of his public persona - very hard to have no range and try to recover from that.

Wasn't she in Flirting Scholar with him? And God of Gamblers 3: Back to Shanghai back in the early 90s?
Wasn't that the reason why Mulan was so bland and uncharismatic in the live action Mulan movie? Read somewhere that it was the actress' decision too because she didn't want to look "undignified and ugly by having a range of emotions..

Stop with the concentration camp/genocide nonsense. No evidence china is doing a genocide. It's not exactly moral to coerce cultural change on people but it's basically just the industrial revolution but delayed and sped up and without the deaths from starvation. The area is a total backwater they're trying to modernize it and get rid of the appearance of it being Muslim. Not great but way better than what we are currently doing

The 4 Dishonorable mentions:
Ryan Reynolds’s- the guy who is perpetually Deadpool in every movie he’s in.
Will Farell- the consummate man-child whose comedy style of being arrested in development peaked at Stepbrothers.
Bruce Willis- the straight to DVD king himself whose aggressive mediocrity was so legendary Comedy Central deemed it worthy of a roast.
Liam Neeson- your stepfather’s favorite old man with a particular set of skills. He was never quite able to capture that same lightning in the bottle after the first Taken, but bless his heart that never stopped him from trying again and again and again and again…
You can add Vin Diesel to the list. He's a one franchise/one trick pony guy.
I'd cut Bruce Willis because of his health condition. Who knows when it started to manifest
Can we throw in Seagal or has he fallen far enough from consideration?
Also Will Smith whose whole shtick now is being as arrogant and self-absorbed as possible and pushing an obnoxious level of zero-talent nepotism onto the world.

@@Karube69Well, public perception of him eclipses the 2% filmography where he actually tries to act. Unless he rebrands himself permanently, (like Matthew McConaughy), he’ll always be known as Deadpool/Deadpool adjacent characters.

@@mpeacraft8585 being knowed as Deadpool doesn't mean he doesn't have another good character roles. Gal Gadot seems like she has more fun being animated during interviews than in her movies. She's either a horrible actress or the writers are writing her characters with one hand preoccupied. But let's be honest, it's both. That woman has charisma as much as The Rock has acting range.

They don't even care if they're attractive. Look at how many films Zendaya has starred in.

Reynolds should’ve been here.

It basically already happened with the recent Jumanji movies except Gal Gadot was replaced with Karen Gillan
I can bet on anything that neither Kevin Hart, nor Dwayne, nor Gal Gadot would ever be able to play sincerely comedic and ironical parts as Jack Black has done in the past.
Well, I'll be dead honest with y'all, as a kid I liked The Rock the first couple times i saw him, but since then he's become too monotonous. I really liked Kevin Hart in Jumanji 2 but that's about his range. And i never really liked Gal Gadot ever.

i've formed this nitpick with Zendaya simply 'cause after she lucked out on fame EVERYONE tries to put her in for reasons unknown.
She isn't bad necessarily, just painfully average as an actor so this constant barrage of role after role after role just feel like either she desperately wants to prove to herself/everybody she isn't just riding off tom holland's back OR the directors cashing in on the hot new face for marketing purposes.
either way if i see zendaya it's instantly a nope for me.
She's actually quite insufferable. Although I've only seen her in spiderman movies.
Nerfed appearance aside, how did the Lola character go from a sexy and soothing voice in 1996 to a boring and performanceless voice in 2021?
She was a terrible pick for the Dune movies imo

wow! theses descriptions are unexpectedly very accurate

The rock is to modern films what Arnold was in the 80s except with an eighth of the charisma and none of the charm.
Jack Black's best role was getting shot to pieces by Bruce Willis's sentry gun in The Day Of The Jackal.
Yeah every one of those "action heroes" can't act. ZERO range.
Jason Statham still good
The music, the script. This is masterful.

Who tf watches rock movies anyways???
He can't act he doesn't know how to act and yet people made him a multimillionaire.
