Actually they did beat Virginia! Called a 3 point foul with no time left. VA made 3 free throws to win! Auburn should have been national champions that day.

Auburn was hands down the best team in the country that MARCH. No, we weren't the best team for the entire year, but starting with the SEC tournament and blowing out UT by 16 in the SECCG, the dismantling of UNC, this historic game against UK. We got robbed by the refs against UVA, it was a hard fought game, and give UVA the credit for being able to finish in the finals. But the fact that this team made their run, after losing their most talented player in the second half against UNC in the sweet 16, shows what a great coach Bruce is. A lot of teams after losing Okeke would have given up.
The fact that most of these auburn players went either G-league or didn’t ever make it to the NBA and they beat three nba feeder schools in a row is insane!
I think it’s a testament to the importance of fundamentals in the sport. Sports pundits often get mesmerized by the history and tradition of the common four (UK, KU, UNC and Duke under Coach K) as if they are the only programs who matter and because of how entertaining they make the sport and their history, that it should always be that way.

Bruce Pearl coached against Virginia (though a different style under Calhoun assistant Leitao - now at DePaul) in 2007 when he was at Tennessee (narrowly lost to Ohio State in the Sweet 16. John Calipari (who like Tony Bennett was born in Pittsburgh) had never coached against Bennett at Virginia.

In what way? If you’re referring to the foul on Guy, absolutely a foul. If you’re referring to the no call on the double dribble, very few people would have ever caught that in live action, and his jersey was grabbed right around the time the ball was dribbled off his leg and that wasn’t called either.

I was at this game and it was so fun. The whole game all you heard were Kentucky fans cheering and by the last 10 minutes of the game the stadium was full of auburn chants

The impact Bruce Pearl has had on Auburn has been beyond monumental and special. As difficult as it is I have a feeling Pearl will get back to the Final Four and win a championship. It’s seems to be much more difficult for Pearl with how the NCAA and most refs continually show disdain and contempt towards Pearl and Auburn. Last years (2024) tourney seeding and the horrendous and incredibly suspicious officiating during that Yale game was a perfect example! I’ve never seen such terrible officiating and no other games during that tournament were called like that. I’m not saying it was intentionally fixed, but it was a perfect example of how you would fix a game as an officiating crew. Whether they were trying to give Yale the outright win or just have them cover the spread I can’t say, but I’ll always have my suspicions. I truly hope Pearl and his son stay at Auburn for a very long time.
