In reality, french only when for certain roles/companies, for example if you work for a company that is involved in businesses in France, Belgium or other francophone countries but they aren't many actually. I really can't remember any time french skills made in difference in the two years I have been on the island. My suggestion: apply regardless of the french requirements on the offer. If it's not a french company, you stand a chance.
