- Flying from Vietnam to Hong Kong in 1958.
Hong Kong was established as a colony of the British Empire after the Qing Empire ceded Hong Kong Island in 1841-1842. The colony expanded to the Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 and was further extended when the United Kingdom obtained a 99-year lease of the New Territories in 1898. Hong Kong was briefly occupied by Japan from 1941 to 1945 during World War II. The whole territory was transferred from the United Kingdom to China in 1997. Hong Kong maintains separate governing and economic systems from that of mainland China under the principle of "one country, two systems"
Taking the tram to Victoria Peak.
Running from Garden Road Admiralty to Victoria Peak via the Mid-Levels, it provides the most direct route and offers good views over the harbour.
Victoria Peak is a hill on the western half of Hong Kong Island. It is also known as Mount Austin, and locally as The Peak only generally. With an elevation of 552 metres, it is the tallest hill on Hong Kong Island, and the 29th tallest in the territory of Hong Kong.
A visit to The Tiger Balm Gardens (or Aw Boon Haw Gardens)The Tiger Balm Gardens (or Aw Boon Haw Gardens) in Hong Kong, demolished in 2004 to make way for a housing development.
Plus Victoria Harbour is a natural landform harbour in Hong Kong separating Hong Kong Island in the south from the Kowloon Peninsula to the north. The harbour's deep, sheltered waters and strategic location on South China Sea were instrumental in Hong Kong's establishment as a British colony in 1841 and its subsequent development as a trading centre.
Then shots of the airport.
And the Star Ferry is EXACTLY the same!
yes, why fix it, if it ain't broke :) "some people" should have kept a lot of other old and well-working things and ...systems still in place.
Its before the new runway extended out to harbour
Thank you for thr precious video!
My pleasure, I am glad that you enjoyed my movie.
This video was shot just two years before my very first visit to Hong Kong. We arrived by BOAC De Havilland Comet IV and I can remember disembarking the steps and smelling the legendary nullah (the pool of stagnant water just next to the runway) at its worst.
I was just a few years old but I can still recall turning round to ask my mother what the unpleasant smell was, to which she diplomatically replied:
"It's the fish, dear."
Very interesting, thank you.
❤
Delightful. I was trying to figure where the gardens were until I read the description.
Thank you for watching, I'm glad that you enjoyed my home movie.
you can still see one remnant of the garden, a quite ugly tiger "sculpture"in front of the "Legend" in Tai Hang.
