3,500 Meters Above: Zanskar Valley’s Guardians of Peace and Resilience | SLICE | FULL DOCUMENTARY

- High in the Himalayas, 3,500 meters above sea level, lies the remote Zanskar Valley in India-a place untouched by time. Hidden within this rugged, icy landscape is a serene village, home to a community of Buddhist nuns. Despite the harsh environment, their warmth, joy, and extraordinary generosity shine.
Fifteen years after her first journey to this sacred valley, filmmaker Caroline Riegel returns to reconnect with these remarkable women. Spending an entire winter immersed in their daily lives, she unveils a heartfelt portrait of resilience, spirituality, and a world seemingly frozen in time.

Perhaps the most heartfelt and well made documentary I have ever seen about winter in a small village in Zanskar. Caroline you have done a wonderful job of filming the lives of these truly hardy women of the nunnery. The narration, visuals, the audio, all are first rate. The changes which have come to hitherto remote communities in the high Himalaya is a fact that one cannot escape from. Roads, infrastructure, population growth, pollution seem to be inevitable as our world seems to be collapsing under the combined weight of progress and development. Though we may bemoan the disappearance of communities and ways of life that seemed in the past to have stood up to centuries of change, the revolution that we as homo sapiens have created for ourselves especially in the last 100 years or so in terms of technology and communication networks almost dictates that the drastic altering of human and animal lives and the balance of the environment will never be the same again.
I agree with you 💯
I just got back from a visit to Tibet and Qomolangma. It’s a different country but same spirit and same people. I very much appreciated this movie ❤
Zanskar is in ladakh india
@@stanwang64can you read? “It’s a different country” ….
@@AdventureSam im just saying
@@AdventureSam These people are Tibetan and it's their country. The CCP illegally occupied their country, India just allowed all the folks from Tibet who migrated due to repression to freely practice their religion and protect their culture in various parts of India. So it's not a different country, it belongs to Tibetan people. Having said that all the Tibetan/buddhist own and are entitled to stay anywhere in India since Buddhism is part of Indic Dharmic Sanatana Culture
@ bro im ladakhi and we are indians who said we belong to tibet😂
Though our culture and religion is same that doesnt makes us tibetan and who said budhhism is linked with sanatan dharma get yourself out of delusion
Wow !! I mean everything ... the trek, harsh ruggedness of the terrain, the sweet people, the cinematography, the joy and peace ... everything was wow !
Zanskar, those mountains and landscapes are phenomenally beautiful and the people too.
They are the happiest people on earth.
Possessions and wealth don't make you happy and they are the living proof.😊❤
One of the best documentary I have ever seen.
Search for india in motion
I recommend Tibet, the Path to Wisdom also from Slice (full documentary). It follows 1 woman Ani in her Himalayan wanderings in search of a secret yoga of magic heat. It seems like Lord of the Rings in the sense of it being a great adventure, but it's real world.
@@mountainair definitely...Love to watch....
Heart felt thanks and gratitude to Caroline and the teams for helping them and giving them wonderful experience.
I love how Caroline speaks fluent Ladakhi with the people. At first I wondered if a translator was also travelling with them, but I was amazed to see her fluency. As someone from Ladakh myself, It truly reflects her love and dedication to Ladakh and the nuns, allowing her to converse without any language barrier.
Hi Caroline, thank you so much for making this document. Once again. This is the second time I am watching the same documentary, but there it’s a sequel to a documentary that you have recorded already. I believe this is one of the most beautiful documentary, and when I saw this popped out on my screen, it was a beautiful experience which I want to live, so I am really thankful you when they live the life and made me equity with these beautiful nuns who are living their life in the most difficult situations. It was situation in their life, and that too, with a smile that they own.
Slice, thank you for your wonderful documentary. I lived in those places in 1982, living with these population
Is
Refreshment for the spirit
I can't even imagine How Brave Dogra Hindu Warriors would be who traveled from the plains of Jammu region under the Leadership of General Zorawar Singh Kaluria and travelled through such landscape & conquered the region not only this but reached Tibet & fought bravely there as well & defeated Tibet Army, forcing Tibet to take help from the Chinese Army to defeat them.
Unfortunately very little is written & known to people abt such great legends of India.
Proud to be a Dogra myself.
Full of positive emotions ..thank you so much for sharing their lives .
oh ,my God sach a beautiful vedio its make me Cry Really Awesome thank for share sach a beautiful vedio...🙏🙏🙏

who is she?
Great work done by you thanks to all our french friends
This is my third watch and every time i watch i feel the pain of change that's so rapidly engulfing Zanskar. How i wish i could freeze time and let zanskar be the zanskar you first stepped you feet on it.
I admired these wonderful people, I'm jealous of their peace and tranquility. Thank you for making this insightful documentary about others people's life but with love, kindness, happiness, and appreciation ❤️ 💙 💖 ♥️
Bless these people
Stunning! Thank you
Glad the this trek is in India. It will be in my bucket list.
Unbelievable work dear, love from kinnaur Himachal india
One good positive documentary from slice on India...thanks slice
Thank you 🙏🏻❤ from zanskar ❤
Slice always making awesome documentaries.
Such a beautiful film...Deeply touched...very grateful...
Beautiful, friendly, happy and kind people. Yangdol is especially a beautiful spirit. I hope they can maintain their ancient and pure way of life. God bless these people.
I have also stayed in Zanskar for a long time, these people are very kind and worshipers of humanity. Today basic facilities like roads, electricity have reached this isolated area. Because of them this culture is under threat, people will also become businessmen, the importance of money is increasing, I mean these people are also becoming subject to material pleasures. With time it will become difficult to maintain this simple world as it is today.😢
The thought of this beautiful culture and people changing, makes me sad.
Thanks for this wonderful video 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I really drop my tears beautiful video ❤
Tashi Delek, thank you, Beautiful Zanskar, Beautiful people and documentary

hoping Sonam finds happiness and her family finds understanding over time
Hope father supports his child, poor child must have felt frightened, felt she couldn't talk looking back there were signs but not when nobody had knowledge.alone giving birth and fled in fear hope nuns have forgiven her for her keeping her child secret, she was brave to travel with new born .dead at night winter too. Said prayers for them both, good luck to future ofnunnery with change brings good and terrible things greed and more want, poor countries suffer from rest of the world.roads safe passage don't believe in want ask do you need us it necessary if answer isno stick to not accepting greed for onedint kill of close community. Young leave old are left that's no future for village.

Thank you ! Don't forget to subscribe 🤗
Excellent video 😊
sometimes I feel how much we take things for granted- even very mundane stuff like using a toilet, taking a shower. for these people in the harsh weather and the region even a decent toilet and taking a bath would be a luxury. How would they react if they were offered a hot shower ? how would they react to a flush toilet. its tough living a life as these nuns. people like me who has always been a city dweller might not survive for more than a few days under these circumstances. the very bringing up we got is so self consuming- we study to earn and provide for unending needs whereas these people study to pray and bring peace to the world being devoid of even basic needs themselves. Lot of Respect to these women. God bless
'They made a clear statement, modernization will pollute their environment. Thats their fundamental belief.
They would hate the modern amenities you find so dear. Because it takes them away from their peace.
I love this documentary, but would it be possible to add subtitles instead of voice overs. I really want to hear everyones own voice in their own language, it would increase the immersion and cultural appreciation.
For those of us with sight problems, subtitles would be a disaster. Please don’t change things ❤
Zanskar ! :-) :-)
yes peter sheppard ,this is your friend from zanskar
Very humble and loverable person...may god keep her safe... only thing she needs to serve the food in a hygiene way...
I really like the music at 14:00 I would like to know who performed it. Beautiful.
Very😍✨ good 👍 information . How they live so difficult.
When was this shot?
Very sad to see that the river no longer freezes over!
Unfortunately, we’ve now officially crossed the +1.5°C mark 😬😔
Amazing video graphics 👍 with extreme weather ☁️🌡️ nice video 🎉
I can’t help but feel that you’ve exposed these people - they were existing peacefully and now the world knows about them and external influence will burst their bubble
Shut it her life changed

Nam BUDHAYA
Hello,
I have to tell you have shown wrong map of the India 🇮🇳 describing in the video. That is incomplete!
❤❤
All Himalayan regions are very similar to each others but lhadak , In Nepal Mustang and Dholpo are more similar than others places even dialects are almost same.
Mustang used to be ruled by Ladakh sometime in history
Awesome Respect
To your Friendship
God Bless you All
Amen🎉🎊🤲
Best Wishes to her
& Baby but She Dishonoured
The Nunury.this is
Whats happening now
Sad World the Devil
Awaits his Chance
Thanks Slice
You forgot to mention and to thank indian army.
When this video shoot?
Please do mention the year you have visited cause Zanskar Valley have changed a lot now. It will confuse people about the Present situation.
It’s back in 2020 not sure you can change the weather😂
I could move to that nunnery, just to laugh for the rest of my pityful life.Working to live, shovelling snow, cooking, animal care is but a miniscule price to pay.The Cities & Towns & Countries in most of the world are Sess Pools of Filth, Greed, Violence & Superficialness!
The nuns are infectiously humble, I didn't understand a word but it was irrelevant coz I felt them❤
Beautiful Just Beautiful💯
Same like Dolpo
No more trek in the river will be required soon
Please track sonam wanna see her again !❤
Shameless SLICE you come to our country and our army helps you and still you are showing wrong map of India. Get educated.
Slice don’t make documentaries they license them… go speak to the producers.
Beautifully documented...just a request that you have shown distorted map of India...so reporting this video of urs for that hopefully whosoever agree with me will report
❤🙏🙏🙏🥰🍀💐🍀💐🍀💐🌹🌹🌹🫶🫶🫶
It's like a slice of Heaven and Hell. Harsh survival conditions but away from the big city Rat race. The stress, worry, anxiety, of most people to survive everyday.
22:51 Could the temple be sitting on a mountain that emits Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)?
Need 2 part too after sonam get baby
At least use the correct map of India
Correct the map of India.
Reported it...u can do that
You took refuge in army camp, eat their food. Survived because of the helicopter supplied the ration . Stayed with your friends ( nuns) yet you betrayed all of them by showing incorrect Map of INDIA . What a shame seems it was all for the content only. Yet a good documentary.
Of course Sonam will increase
Tibet is cyring 😢
