The alien in this film made me feel so uncomfortable. Oddly enough, I was in awe every time the alien was shown. It looked so other wordly unlike other alien films wherein the creature is typical or potrayed with characteristics of earth living beings such as human/animal like features (teeth, eyes, nose, etc.) The unfamiliarity brought about by the alien's structure really creeped me out. A disturbing and captivating film. It was such a great movie. As expected from Jordan Peel :)
One of the influences for Jean Jacket was the immortal jellyfish, implying that it's not actually dead. It will just need to recover for a long time in a dormant state. In fact, one of the experts that worked with Jordan Peele on the design had said as much in an interview as it was being released.
The immortal jellyfish is not immortal in the sense that it regenerates, it rewinds time by turning back into a baby when significant damage is done to the body. An immortal jellyfish could not rewind time here, they don’t actually live that long.
i feel like annihilation's was the most genuinely alien and incomprehensible. but nope is a pretty close second. that square fluttery yellow-green eye that kept unfolding from itself was bizarre af.
JJ is definitely my favorite monster in any media. Despite it being far from the strongest creatures in any media, hell it's probably on the weaker side of all creatures, JJ is super interesting. I love the design but I'm not gonna talk about it since other people already have. What I'm gonna talk about is its intelligence. It's smart, but not human smart, more like animal smart. It knows where and when to hunt/eat. It knows that in order to catch its prey it must be patient and blend in with its surroundings, an ambush predator. Unlike most man-eating creatures in any media where it seems like they're either too super smart or way way too aggressive like they have some kind of rabies. JJ is also smart enough to avoid places with thousands of humans. So, instead of big cities, JJ chooses to live in a big desert. But ofc just like any other animals, JJ isn't that smart, like the part where JJ eats the fake horse thinking that it was real or like in this video where it eats a huge as balloon and dies because of it. Speaking of dies, I love that JJ is not some kind of invincible creature. We just don't know what its weakness is. All we see is a giant flying disc and so at first we're all under the impression that since it's a UFO it must be hard to take it down since UFO = high tech that humans don't understand. But later on we learned that it's actually a creature, so seeing a creature that big flying on the cloud makes most people under the impression that it's invincible or at least hard to kill. But at the end of the movie it just died because it ate a balloon, and so it turns out that it's not that strong. I love that more than a creature that is seemingly impossible to kill. JJ gives us an illusion that it's hard to kill when in reality it's not that stupidly overpowered. The only reason why it hasn't been dead sooner is because of the protagonists trying to catch videos or pictures of JJ. So yeah, that's why I love JJ. Sure it's not as big and scary and powerful as any other men-eating creatures, but man everything about it is just so cool.
Its behavior is just SO perfect, we also see that it was trying to scare away the baloon and only tried to eat it as the last alternative since it wasnt going away
I wonder if JJ is not an apex predator from wherever it came from. Its skin seems thin, and it likes to camouflage itself when resting. In some way, its behavior reminds me of frogfish except that JJ can move fast. Of course it can be a pursue predator, but perhaps another use of its speed is to escape its own predator.
One of the creepiest things about JJ that you mentioned is it avoids large cities with thousands of humans, and instead picks up stragglers (like the missing hikers briefly mentioned and were heard screaming overhead before Keith David's character died in the beginning, or if provoked like what happened with Jupe). That means, at some point, JJ and/or other creatures like him may have been feasting on large scores of people until something happened that caused JJ and/or the possible rest of his species to be wary of going after cities. If the government has been keeping JJ and possibly others like him a secret, that means there was an underground system of people that have been trying to train giant flying people-eating creatures from the skies to not overindulge in hunting, when they could have at any time... 0_0
@Scarshadow666 I dont think training is the what causes them to avoid large cities, rather the government just secretary killed them if they got to close
When Jean Jacket swallowed the doll, Jupe kept glaring into Jean Jacket's eyes and then pointed. This means that Emerald did not kill Jean Jacket, but Jupe got his revenge. I think this part is the best representation of the film.
@@jayalbert9849the reason why they went and challenged a lifeform the defies our very understanding of life itself was simple: fame. To them, it was worth... and it actually was. Sure, the old man died but he went out of his own volition. None of the other three had to pay the ultimate price and the monster was recorded and they even took a big photo of it. I mean, its pretty obvious if you see the movie that that was the drive of the protagonist.
@@shoesncheese knowledge. Knowing that these things actually exist like the jean jacket will allow humanity to be more cautious of what is existing in the universe and outside their planet. Making sure that humanity remains an equal footing or greater in the food chain of the apex predator.
Just realized that JJ exploding by eating Jupe's balloon lookalike is kind of like when Gordy touches Jupe's hand and has his head blown off - "exploding fist bump"
This is an epic climax! Such a weird creature in the sky that is killed by a balloon and a photograph! Weird if you say it fast, but it works for Jordan Peele’s Filmmaking!

That’s not how it died lol. It died when it crunched the balloon because the balloon basically exploded like a grenade… in order for that balloon to be as big as it was and float as high as it did is because it was filled with flammable gas. So when it got crunched, it exploded lol
World renowned computer scientist and ufologist Jacque Vallee had proposed a theory that UFOs and aliens, angels and demons, fairies and mythological creatures were all part of the same phenomenon whether it’s by their design or by our misinterpretation. This movie’s “alien” feels like it was based on that theory.
The thumbnail of this video is so frightening. Can you imagine seeing something like that in the air, not knowing what it is? All you know is it will devour you. When it revealed itself I was like WHAT IN THE WORLD? I was a bit scared to look up, I can't lie.
I totally love how the last part of the movie mirrors so well the final confrontation of “Jaws” for me it’s a brilliant way of quoting and revisiting the most iconic “creature” of the movies’s history!
i actually feel a little bad for JJ in the end. there are obvious parallels between it and gordy. both animals exploited by humans, then killed when they reverted to animal instincts and caused damage and mayhem. there are also theories that JJ might be a biblically accurate angel that had somehow gotten lost in our world, which kinda makes it even sadder.
"biblically accurate" the bible's depictions of angels are metaphorical. they don't look like mysterious flying cloaks or what not. the bible only depicts angels like that because its trying to convey the absolute beauty that the angels possess. imagine trying to describe something super-naturally beautiful into conceivable words. that's basically what it is. the actual biblically accurate angels look like you and I , just more beautiful. they are men. but I dunno what bible your reading from lol.
@@110pLover no shit. we're talking about a movie and you felt the need to barge in and discuss your religion. your specific take on your religion, at that. if you really don't push your beliefs, then keep them to yourself. we all have our own beliefs and no one's is more right than another's.
So, this is a theory - if Jean Jacket is not an alien but a species native to Earth, then I assume that their corpses either dissolve before reaching the ground or turn into clouds.
Even a piece of them would end up somewhere. It might be possible that it's from our solar system, just not from earth, but from another moon or planet, like venus. It might have not necessarily flown directly to earth, but rather, ended up on earth through some kind of spore.
Love that it could have ended with the Haywoods killing the thing but no evidence is made and they are caught by the media in all of this craziness but they managed to actually get evidence. (Plus I don’t think JJ’s corpse will rot and decay within minutes so its body can be found and confirmed as extraterrestrial or unknown species)
3:22 I wonder if someone has a speculation or theory on why the square pulsing shape changes angle once it gets close to the balloon for for a brief second. Maybe its something like how you turn the dial on the lens of a camera for zoom/focus. I never noticed that before and it fascinated me lol
I think it's similar to an intimidation tactic, warning it to back off from its territory. Though honestly it could be anything, but the form just seemed like it was a very defensive form after multiple times nearly getting choked by flags and barb wire
@@ExileOfSand I understand this is what people seem to speculate most often that it's for intimidation/stress. I'm more specifically curious why it would change the angle of the square "organ" to a diamond.
@@xxMrbojanqlezxx I interpreted it as being a sign of hesitation to JJ that its intimidating display wasn't working well enough to go in for a frontal attack, so it backed off and opted instead to strike the balloon from a higher vantage point after it ascended.
@@joshjess9841 it is specifically the part where Jean Jacket gets close and then falls back in my timestamp where it goes form square to diamond. This is such a fascinating creature design but it is that exact part where i'm wondering why biologically it would do that...
Maybe it changed the shape to surprise and jumpscare because that’s not what you expected(square). The diamond shape corners are also slightly stretched from the square fold
i think my favorite theory about this thing is that it isnt even an alien, and is just a weird-ass undiscovered animal that gets interpreted as the "flying saucer" myth and there are an untold number of these things out in the wild
I actually think it'd have far fewer hit points than that; an exploding balloon ruptured it and a minuscule scraping of barbed wire inside its digestive tract hurt it enough to drive it into full threat display. If this film had taken place in Texas there would have been far too many guns in use for the thing to be as scary. 😁
Haven't seen the movie, but does the corpse vanish after this? I'm guessing she takes the pics for proof...so if the body lands somewhere, more pics plus physical proof.
Being an apex predator doesn't make it inherently indestructible. Plus, when you think about it, the creature pretty much did it to itself, but it's animal instincts to defend it's territory from what it thought was a rival is what led it to not only catch it, but also try to eat it. Also, lets be real, that cowboy balloon is pretty big, so the force in air pressure exerted from being detonated while inside the sheet monster's bowels ? Yeah, i can see now how that would be sufficient enough to tale it out permanently. Also, i think the theme of a popping balloon being linked to a wild animal's rage is somewhat relevant in this film.
I love how it's normal disguise is a stereotypical alien u.f.o but it's true form is a lovecraftian monster thing, one of the most creative aliens designs out there
I loved the fact that Jordan Peel put his love of sci-fi lore and horror lore in this film; Jean Jacket is a creature that give off the same terror as if it was the supernatural or paranormal monster with fangs and bloody claws, or superhuman power. Conversely, Jean Jacket also looks like the same type of harmless looking creature, that you would find in an episode of Star Trek-- yet still, all the more powerful and dangerous of intent; intelligent enough to hunt us humans, but primitive enough to seemingly, not do it, malicious and malevolently. It could easily be a Lovecraftian creature, but instead, it’s a little more harmless than the shark in Jaws, at times… But, just as powerful as any element of nature, albeit diminutive in scale than a full blown storm or ocean torrent.
I love when the depiction of an alien actually seems alien and strange and not just a bipedal monster with fangs.

One of the influences for Jean Jacket was the immortal jellyfish, implying that it's not actually dead. It will just need to recover for a long time in a dormant state. In fact, one of the experts that worked with Jordan Peele on the design had said as much in an interview as it was being released.
Then it must be killed quickly

The immortal jellyfish is not immortal in the sense that it regenerates, it rewinds time by turning back into a baby when significant damage is done to the body. An immortal jellyfish could not rewind time here, they don’t actually live that long.

I absolutely adore this movie. That thing taking these different shapes while stalking her in the background is so freaky.
Certainly one of the most interesting alien concepts I've seen. It really has a Lovecraftian cosmic horror vibe
JJ's secondary weapon is intimidation.

World renowned computer scientist and ufologist Jacque Vallee had proposed a theory that UFOs and aliens, angels and demons, fairies and mythological creatures were all part of the same phenomenon whether it’s by their design or by our misinterpretation. the amount of parallels between JJ and Gordy make rewatching this movie a treat

No they get sold as sushi in China
Love that it could have ended with the Haywoods killing the thing but no evidence is made and they are caught by the media in all of this craziness but they managed to actually get evidence. Unironically, the leftovers are a much better piece of proof than the pictures, since pictures can be faked, a literal alien creature can't.
