  • In the early phases of your startup, do you need a cofounder? Who's the right person and what kind of prior relationship should you have? Is it helpful for fundraising? And if you're not a technical person, how do you convince a coding ninja to get on board?
In a new series from This Week in Startups, Jason Calacanis tackles common questions in Startup Basics, brought to you by WSGR. As a serial entrepreneur and angel investor, Jason has been on both sides of the table. Now he share his advice with you in short segments, focused on one question. Plus, key advice from investor-turned-coach Jerry Colonna, and VC Mark Suster.

Great inspiration. No cofounder is needed unless you’re constrained and need compliments your shortfalls. Oftentimes, they slow you down and get into unnecessary debates.

I'm a solo founder and it's great to see illustrious leaders like Jason and Mark call out the cofounder ideas as a bit of myth... and is a lonely journey til there's some real traction.

I'm a solo founder as well. However, I enjoy using freelancers until I get a bit of traction. Goodluck!

I feel for you guys. I think its really hard to know you're making the right decisions when there's no one as invested as you to bounce thoughts off of

I’m noticing that there’s a difference between *Founders and First Employees*

Perfect! Jason, you confirm what I've been saying all this time. Seeking a Co-founder / Partner is like marriage. Myself I don't want to wait until my startup get up and running then look for a Co-founder and discover my vision and potential partner idea are clashing. I want him or her to get to know me and form a business relationship for a successful startup.

Ideally you can start a company by yourself; otherwise a cofounder that you don't know is a big risk.

Hey Jason I watch your show all the time. I feel what you said at the end has some relevancy. I’m towards the end of the race and, and just about finished with the mock-up app for seed round (left work and took no salary to learn the skills my self. Product dev background) just need someone to build it. With me doing everything as the “deal maker” you described would it be wise at this point to give someone 1-3% to keep my option open or look for a technical founder. My gut tells me I can pull this together with a founding team, however it is in the AR/VR | tech space.

It must depend on what type of company one is creating. Jobs and Wozniak created computers from the garage. That is an epic task that takes more than one talent. Folks like me just deliver stuff.

    Hello!
Can someone explain the process of adding a Co-Founder?
Does he/she needs to invest in the existing business to acquire the Co-Founder Tag?

    • @HanisaMohamed

no, you just split the equity with them since you have 100%. So when they join it is 50-50. It's all solidified when you incorporate.

If the partner that got fired after one year and he vested 7.5% of his 30% of shares, what happens to his remaining 22.5% of shares? Who gets those shares? Can the board allocate them elsewhere?

    • @waynet8953

Belongs to the company unallocated, or allocated later.

    I need a minor cofounder i. e. 1% (to start)
    All I'd need is .00000000000000000001%
of the work done, which is a great deal. I
am open to more, should the cofounder
want to do more. Where do I find people
to interview? Thanks in advance, Peace

I might be willing to do a bit of work for you if you could do a bit of work for my start up. No need to give away company equity- no money, just work for work
