Masters of War by Bob Dylan is in my opinion the greatest, but WAR is certainly right up there.

I always liked the message of CCR's Fortunate Son which highlighted how unfairly The Draft is actually applied in the United States. The rich and connected (i.e. corporate titans and politicians) ensured their children didn't spend time in the service, or if they did volunteer, it was only as officers that didn't see battle.
I'm from England and Edwin lived over here for many years. He lived just a couple of miles up the road from where I live. You often saw him walking around town and the man always had time to stop and chat. An absolute gentleman and a great singer.

It was one of those blunt message songs to rally behind like Hoyt Axton's The Pusher. They are clear on the message. Same for Eve of Destruction.
You don't speak for "Everyone". There were & are plenty of people that didn't & don't love this simplistic one-dimensional song.
@@johnnybmean74 blunt but true. For me I wouldn't seek it out to listen to anymore. Repetitive and I've already heard it countless times over the decades.
"War can't give life, it can only take it away," is a lyric that's stuck with me my whole life. it shouldn't have to be said, but it's always worth reminding ourselves.

Some people have to go to war to protect THEIR life, in that essence, it is saving lives.
But in the end, it can and does save lives. Don't think so? Ask any Jewish person.

When I was in Vietnam I managed to get a reel-to-reel recording of this song and never missed an opportunity to blast it out! Surprised I never got in trouble for it! To all my brothers and sisters out there Welcome Home. It was relevant then and even more now and always. I wish I knew who to credit for this quote, "War Isn't About Who's Right It's About Who's Left".

Yes! Enjoying the "Music" ... Bouncing to the beat, laughing, etc. while being TOTALLY oblivious to the words and their meaning. As a former Air Force AeroMed during Vietnam I witnessed first hand "the destruction of innocent life's on a daily basis. I'm 73 and still wake up at times with nightmares.
One of the biggest songs during the hippie/antiwar movement!

This was released in Jan, 1970 so it was during the Vietnam war.
Another 70's anti-war song that always got me is "One Tin Soldier" which was featured in the movie "Billy Jack"

This song was Edwin Starr's biggest r&b crossover hit ever!!! The song went all the way to hit the #1 spot on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Soul charts during the late summer of 1970. The most popular anti-war song of all-time!!! By the way, this song stayed at the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 spot for three weeks. An absolute banger indeed!!! One more thing. Edwin Starr did a follow-up song to War. It is called Stop The War, Now!! An absolute banger indeed!!!
Starr is so unappreciated these days... "Agent Double-O-Soul", "25 Miles", "Oh How Happy", and "Love (The Lonely People's Prayer)" are classics.
I was a preteen at the time WAR came out, and I think Freda Payne's "Bring The Boys Home" was played around the same time. But what I heard was that, both Edwin's and Freda's career stalled because of the anti-war songs.

I was 14 when this song came out and it had such an impact on me. We were all so fed up with the Vietnam war by then and this song just said it all for us. Greatest anti war song ever made. I still scream it out when I sing it today just like I did 53 years ago. The line "War can't give life it can only take it away" says it all as well as "They say we must fight to keep our freedom but Lord no there's got to be better way."

When I was in Army boot camp, WAR was always on the jukebox in the little PX beer garden across from our chow hall. We'd all be mentally boogying to the song when we were in the chow line. You didn't actually boogy or the drill sergeants would be all over you. A few months later I was in Vietnam and the song was still playing all over the place...We all loved it.
Fort Sill Basic and AIT as a radioman. Married to a PRC 25 with an aerial to tell folks who to shoot first in order to booger up commo.
And that song kept playing in my head, syncing to the sound of rotors as those sick green birds disgorged us like the Phoenix taking a crap.
It would have sure been easier to have learned to love snow.😂

If only that were true, but the generation that allegedly despised war cheered the loudest and pushed the hardest for the illegal and unjustifiable Iraq war (which, not at all coincidentally, they were too old to serve in).

My father got so mad when they went into Iraq. He said, "You don't go into someone else's back yard and start telling them what to do"! He further said, "No One under the age of 78 should ever be allowed to fight in any wars. They'd get down to basics and war would be over quickly". In other words, They'd Work It Out Amongst Themselves"!

I think the age to go to war & vote should be 21. It would give children their childhoods back and get politicians out of their filthy hands.

If there was ever a song that was the equivalent of being bitch-slapped across the face with reality...this was it. Really hit hard when this was released...but the message in this song is truly timeless. I'd also HIGHLY recommend you listing to the song '25 Miles' from Edwin. If I'm working out, and feel like I've reached my limit...playing '25 Miles' will get at least another 5 minutes out of me...need to check that one out at some point.
I remember when this record was out my brother was drafted to go to the Vietnam War. It was a sad time in our family lives but he came back okay by the grace of God.
I am so glad he came back ok. It may be many years too late but please thank him for his service

Love this song. His voice is awesome. I remember hearing this a lot in the 70s - Vietnam War. I was a kid and didn't understand then how awful it was.
Motown artists went seriously deep, psychedelic, and socially conscious . This was 1970, 5yrs before the end of the Vietnam War. A thankless war where the American soldiers came back to no love.

Being a 60's teen, this song was hard to listen to, but he sang the truth. There was a draft and took all of our boys away and so many never came back, or came back and weren't the same. The ones that came back felt unwelcome. Very hard, sad, time.
As a young 60's hippie for a year...Nam escalated. We lost our young men. Love was not all around anymore. This kind of music appeared...so did the Kent State shootings. It was a time of upheaval.

To my mind this is as great a piece of music as exists.
Edwin was a soul star from the 60s, I watched him live around 1985 in a field in front of about 20,000 other British kids at a scooter rally on the Isle Of Wight.
When he did this song the whole place erupted. He seemed genuinely overwhelmed at the noise coming back at him as we all sang along word for word.
25 miles has to be the next track of his that you do...We all sang that one as well.
So glad you did this one. Every word is real. Really real. Most of us when this song came out only heard it on the radio in the car. We all listened to the same (only) station. So when we drove around, we'd turn the volume up. It sounded incredible!
I played this a lot when my boys wewe in Iraq, I was scared for them every day, thank God they both made it home okay.

I was going into my freshman year in high school and my oldest brother had just gone to Vietnam when this song came out. In spring of "71 we sang it in choir. Loved the song.
I have to correct something Amber said. She mentioned people signing up to go fight. During the Vietnam war our young men were drafted. They went whether they wanted to or not. Which made it so much worse. Unfortunately, things don't change much...on his 1985 live album, Bruce Springsteen made a cover of this with a truly devastating video. I'm not going to tell you why it's devastating but when you see it you'll know
Mark you are dead wrong. Only 25% of troops in Vietnam were draftees. The rest were enlistees and officers…like me.

Just so you know, I came from a military family. My mother and father were Army. My brother, uncles, cousins and friends served in Vietnam. My oldest son retired from the military. And my daughter also served for 8 years. So I am not against the military but senseless wars.

SAW him live he was fantastic ,got the whole place standing up answering to WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR? we all shouted NOTHIN '. Edwin settled in my home town Nottingham England and was still perfoming untill his death . Great performer his delivery in this song always reminds of a "fire and brimstone" preacher. I was in fifth grade. It was “record day” in music class. Somebody brought “War” to school and slapped it on the record player. I tell ya… EVERY kid in that room was blown away. This was a little country school in the farmlands of Pennsylvania. Little girls in gingham dresses and saddle shoes. Boys with patches on their jeans. They were all screaming and feelin’ the funk that day! I politely asked the record’s owner if I could borrow it… I can’t remember giving it back. The thought of war STILL blows my mind.

Great reaction! One of the greatest anti war songs ever. Awesome vocals with the amazing studio musicians from Motown. He sounded different from all their other artists. Check out 25 miles from home his other biggest hit.
War was originally a Temptations track on their Psychedelic shack album . The students & anti Vietnam war movement ,requested it be released as a single . Due to the fact the subject was very controversial at the time ,Motown didn’t want to risk releasing a single version by their top male group the Temptations . It was decided to funk it up & turn it into a powerhouse version by Edwin Starr a singer Motown had acquired on their books when they had took over Ric Tic Golden world records . The rest is history ,it was a big hit & a perfect song for Edwin’s powerful soulful delivery . He had a lot of fans in the U.K. on the Northern soul scene ,& settled here in the U.K. to live & perform the remainder of his life .
Another great Motown song (he was on the Gordy label, which was part of Motown) and one more reason I consider myself so lucky to have grown up in the Detroit area back in the 60's and 70's. I knew the best music in the world was coming out of a house less than 10 miles away from me. Listen to Twenty-Five Miles too. You'll love it.

"Eve of Destruction" is another tough one that we all know. Eve of Destruction has lyrics that are going to make you sit back and think. When we were growing up there was the draft. You didn't have a choice, unless you ran away to Canada or got a medical pass.
Yes, I was going to suggest that one.
And since you mention the draft, we also have "Draft Resistor" and "Monster" off of Steppenwolf's "Monster" LP.

To give balance you should listen to Jackie DeShannon’s “What the World Needs Now is Love” and “Put a Little Love in Your Heart”. Both were hits in the late 60s.

From 1955 to 1975 you had the Vietnam War. The U.S. entered it in 1965. This song came out in 1970. So this was the "I'm sick and tired of this hot, meat grinder mess" response in song. It had to be big, bad, bold and brash to get a large enough attention to those with the same idea. It was just a bloody mess and someone had to say enough is enough. Enter Edwin Starr. 🗣️🌟

I was lucky enough to see Edwin Starr as a 14 year old around 1971 on a radio show in London. A teacher took a few of us as he seemed to know people! Olivia Newton-John was also there. David Hamilton was the DJ (He seemed old even then). 😂😂 Edwin had a bright green cape/jacket on. He seemed so exotic. It was a time when guests sang live. He and Olivia were fantastic. A morning I'll always remember.
