And *nothing* has changed. The RCMP still takes no accountability for any failures and only show up when they feel like it. They learned nothing except maybe lie quicker, next time. They let Wortman kill those people. They ignored past complaints, ignored past crimes, ignored current complaints, literally deleted the memo about him being a risk to police with a gun collection, didn't go in when he started shooting, didn't stop him from leaving, didn't block any necessary roads, denied help offers from Truro police. I don't think they could have failed any worse, considering it was the largest spree killing in Canadian history. The horror never left Nova Scotians, not a lot of us, because Wortman may be dead, but the people who helped him get away with this by ignoring their duties at every opportunity, are not, and a lot of people are terrified of them, because they're either not going to help, or they could be responsible for our demise themselves. There's no excuse good enough, they don't deserve the job they're paid to do and we need a provincial police force. The "good ones" hiding in the ranks can join a different force. Most Nova Scotians are done with them.

I'm Canadian and when this happened last summer our news media refused to disclose his name when reporting the story. Maybe it was to help prevent retaliation. They basically said it was to prevent him from becoming notorious/famous. I'd never seen that happen before. Today was the first time I learned his name. I've dated a couple of first responders and your analysis of this type of person is right on. Also this video gave me some validation. I had a long-term relationship with someone who fits all of the criteria for psychopathy and APD. Of course I thought that I was the problem and I've never been the same since that relationship ended. At one point my ex started the hiring process for our police department. It all mysteriously came to a grinding halt one day and he wasn't hired. I realize now that he had probably gotten to the psychological testing phase and was rejected for his psychopathic traits. He's been incredibly lucky over the years in terms of not getting caught. Despite committing juvenile crimes, drug dealing, violent fights, public intoxication and being a kleptomaniac he has never been arrested. I don't think he's ever been held accountable for anything illegal he's ever done, or the pain and abuse he has inflicted on the people close to him, particularly women. I was in my early 20s when I was with him, and too naive and trusting to understand or accept what I was dealing with. I mourned this relationship for a very long time despite knowing intellectually that I was lucky to escape him.

Thank you so much for covering this one Dr. Grande. It's believed that he was on his way to Halifax, the province's main city, to kill many more people than he already had. I used to live in the area near one of his denture clinics and he had this giant, creepy, smiling set of model dentures that he had hung up on the side of the building. Local residents had it taken down pretty quickly because people said it felt like it was like he was smiling at them after what he did.

@@GuruishMike Nobody knows that. You're stating things as certain that you don't even know. First statement from the RCMP said Griffin applied his decals, new paperwork says Wortman did it himself. They're lying because the decals probably weren't even fake. He was an RCMP asset at the very least if he wasn't just a full member at some point. Fake, decommissioned, out-of-commission, out-of-service, retired, police car. They called it many things because they're hiding something and nothing they say is trustworthy. If it was true, it wouldn't change. The man who runs the company that sells the used police cars said they're required to remove the dividers and radio equipment, not the decals.

They even told Truro police that they didn't need them to block the road/highway, which would have saved Gina Goulet's life for sure. Couldn't even be bothered to save the very last victim. I am in Nova Scotia and yes it was a hard blow. I was someone who did not know that anything was going on in my town that night. It was unsettling to know that this man was around with no knowledge of it. Unless you were on facebook at the time. RIP all those who lost their lives.

Thanks for this, Dr. G. Very sobering to contemplate for me, as I survived a childhood of bullying and abuse of every sort. I channeled my rage into substance abuse and hard work. I moved to 🇨🇦🙏 where a potentially catastrophic event jolted me into Rehab and Recovery.
I've spent 20 years in therapy, and there are many times when my rage threatens to overwhelm me. I'm fortunate to be introspective, very curious and savvy enough to know I was in deep trouble.
Yet, I can only imagine Wortman's feeling of disenfranchisement from family and emotions, after that childhood.
Perhaps there's something about fabled Canadian politeness, combined with a rural background, uncaring and unknowing family and friends, and an educational dearth of supervision, to blame for this?
All I know now is, I benefit from the same system that produces people like the loathsome Bernardo/Homolka, Russell Williams, et al.

I survived childhood abuse and childhood sa. I barly had any family or suport. Never though about hurting anyone. It may be that men are socialised to turn there pain into violanve? As for woman, we are generaly socialised to turn pur pain inward and harm oneself. Anger is not necessarily bad. It is telling you a need is not being met, or something is wrong. But when you are raised to turn your anger into violance, it then becomes destructive. Idk. I'm only 36, and have just got my ptsd into remission. But most woman I know were assaulted as children and then adults. But you don't see us gunning down everyone.

@@iciajay6891 I am a woman dealing with a very abusive situation at work for the last few years, and I deal with a lot of anger and frustration. But I have never turned my rage inward and I don't get depressed. I find that anger, even though it is harmful in the long run, is also helping me survive and keep going until I finish this project, which I need to do. Perhaps men are more prone to externalising because it was helpful back in hunter-gatherer days, as it would drive them to go on and not self-destruct? I'm not an expert, but it is interesting how anger can sometimes help. I wish you well.

I understand that many shows do their best to sensationalize situations that are already extreme, but some testimony I heard after the fact strongly suggested the police work was not very good. They seemed to have failed to make the public aware that the spree killer was impersonating a police officer. Maybe lives could have been spared.. Either way, this was just a terrible thing to have happened and everyone deserved better that day.

We felt the aftermath of this tragedy for months in my household. My daughter and I drove through that area the day before the shootings started and we live in NB--the next province over. My daughter was terrified and anxious for so long! At 12, she understood the horrific nature of what happened and it made her feel like she couldn't trust ANYONE to keep her safe--because this guy fooled people into thinking he was police and made them feel safe. My heart goes out to all the victims of this horrible crime--the ones he hurt and killed, but also the friends, families and communities--because I know they're all still grieving as well. Thanks Dr Grande!

Imagine working in a place where it's important that everyone work as a team, as police departments often encourage, but then everyone is also psychopathic. Even if they were subclinical, how would they respond to a fellow worker who is overtly pathologically psychopathic? Would they shun him, complain about him or make him a kind of hero/role model?

From a psychologist’s standpoint, do you think it would be a good, precautionary measure to have ALL police officers (current + to be) go through full psychiatric evaluations prior to getting the job in the first place or at least being able to continue the work they already do?

No, a lot of police officers love seeing the gruesomeness of crimes. It’s exciting for them. Like at the scene of a horrific car crash with dead bodies lying in the street covered with sheets…..you see several officers going and lifting up the sheet to have a look because it’s part of that excitement that they derive from being a police officer. Why would several officers need to be lifting sheets and looking at the dead bodies lying in the road? Because they want to see them . That’s why so many police officers show up at those horrific accidents….because they want to see the dead, mangled bodies. You can watch them on those UA-cam crash scene sites. All of them walk over to each body, lift the sheet and have a look. Really….they need several officers walking around the crash scene viewing dead bodies….really? I thought that was the coroners job. Most cops love the sickening side of crime….they want to see it because it’s exciting for them.

Thank you for the plug about bullying. while a lot of bullying victims (myself among them) don´t end up going on murdering sprees, there are those where you simply don´t have the support or the temperamenta brakes to put a stop on this type of development. A child who has empathy issues is certainly going to learn that empathy has no place in the world, and when they grow older, innocent people who should never have suffered end up paying the price. Bullying is simply sowing dragon´s teeth. You reap rage.
