When you talk about backseat room, you should always tell us the person's height. There is a big difference if you are 6' 6" vs 5' 6". Without your height your opinion is useless on this matter. The woman in the video should have given an opinion about this too along with her height.
You guys need to watch and listen to your own review in detail. So many conflicting comments. The Mazda isn't bubbly enough, it's too Greman? Dumb comments to say the least. The back seat looks like a straight jacket and the infotainment interface isn't very good. Other than the infotainment on the Toyota, it seemed to be the best all arounder. Listen to the words you use to describe each car. Is the Mazda worth $4000 more than the Toyota?
Yeah totally conflicting in certain points of the review...after a lot of bashing on the 3 and not so much on the Corolla in the end you guys picked - the 3 as the better car. Duh....
Mazda 3 for sure. Looks clean, sleek, classy. The Corolla looks like something a teenager would drive. Its like Toyota took the designers from Scion and said “even though that company failed...you should design our cars now!”
I personally think the Corolla hatch looks much better, especially the rear end. The Mazda looks like a squished egg from the back, unless of course you get the $3k bodykit. The Corolla design looks more aggressive and futuristic imo. Also, the head designer never worked at Scion. The styling is completely different than what Scions were.
@@dygardion9130 why TF you complaining? The corolla barely has 30 inches of legroom in the back! My accord which is 15 years old has more than 34 inches. Know your facts before replying! Also, in the video they're portraying the mazda as "cramped" while in reality it's not compared to the corolla
I think a agree with the new 3 to be too mature. That's the reason in 2017 I bought a 3 and not a Golf. It has a wonderful sporty balance, and you can brake into corners, like old-school Peugeot's. Even lowered the suspension, so it feels even more like my MX5. The new 3 simply is too small. Two sons and me: 6'4. Does not fit. It looks very good, I've not the idea the seats are better than my 3. What I hate is the downgraded rear suspension. A trade off for luxury to keep the price controllable that is unacceptable. The same reason why I did not go for the CX3.
Mazda 3 wins the battle. Ok, you slid the seats backwards all the way then tried sitting in the back making it look bad. I had no issues with passengers sitting in the back of my 3 hatch.
I think cars should focus less on touch screens and focus more on actual buttons or knobs where the driver can easily know what he is actually pressing or turning. I bought a car with an 8 inch touch screen and less knobs but then warns to not use it while driving. The heck!
Good short review I took the new Mazda three for a test drive and agree with the review comments I would ask them perhaps they can respond here, whether they experienced any jarring “thuds” from the wheels when hitting uneven surfaces or minor potholes?
“Toyota used to have a reputation to be boring” ,, I must have been in a coma for a while and didn’t realize it because when did that rep ever change?😂
Better question is when did Toyota got that reputation to begin with? In 80s and 90s they offered a lot of sports and sporty cars. In early 00s they still had something like MR2 Spyder or Corolla with 100hp per liter of displacement. Then they did get in boring period for a little bit but in 2012 they already had GT86 out on the market. They have Supra now, Camry with 300hp V6 and GT86 is still there.
Well you want to tell me that other similar companies have fun to drive sedans? I sure can't come up with even one example except for Mazda 6 which is relatively new car and still pretty slow overall. Don't see any difference between something like Altima, Accord, Legacy and Camry. Rarely any manufacturer has fun to drive sedans in that price range. Toyota has Lexus for pricier fun to drive sedans but generally speaking you need to spend over 30k to get behind the wheel of fun to drive family sedan.
I own 5 Mazdas from 3 to CX9 2013 to 2017 models but now Im driving 19 Civic because my wife is switching brands. The Civic is so boring to drive, theres so much drone inside the cabin because of the CVT.
I settled on the Corolla after owning several hondas over the last 25yrs... I was between the civic SI, mazda 3, and the Corolla hatch... as far as interior comfort and design, safety and tech, style, and cost the Corolla wins... for 18k that I got my Corolla(manual) for, it was the best buy and is fun to drive(if you keep the rpm above 4.5k)...
I like Mazda - the previous gen 3 was tight and fun. The new one seems less engaging and I'm not thrilled with the new design, even if it looks more up-market. By contrast, the Corolla hatchback is a great step forward - more power would be nice. Where the Corolla wins is durability and reliability . See how these hold up in 5 years, and then 10, and you'll appreciate the long-term advantage of Toyota.
I never felt claustrophobic before, until I sat in a Mazda 3. Inside is super dark because of it’s tiny windows and you can’t see shit of what’s happening behind you, massive blind spot.
Corolla. No rear space boot/trunk. Mazda 3 triumph of style over space & vision! Try a Hyunda Elantra (i30) Hatch GT or Kia Cerato for warranty & all that's good.
Think carefully about long warranty periods, you have to ask why they do it. Here in Australia the service costs for the Corolla over the 5 year warranty period is $175 per service or $875 for 5 years I test drove the kia cerato GT and i liked it but my wife didn't. The Kia has a 7 year warranty that is true. The Cerato GT cost $3250 for the first 5 years and over 5k for the whole 7 years. Of course the money might be not a factor to some people. But you can see they do get loads of money from you during the warranty period. Worth pointing out I feel.
@@Steven_Rowe . Yes. The maths don't always match the real case mind you. And Kia has long had 7 year warranty whilst Toyota (& others) have only (grudgingly?) embraced 5 years. I don't know the answer. But I've owned both brand new Toyota and new Hyundais too, & while both are ultra reliable, nowadays, I get the feeling that Toyota is more into 'hardball' whereas Hyundai is extremely helpful & do what they politely say they'll do. As for Kia. I don't know, but if (are they?) like brother company Hyundai on the service and dealer front??
I love my beautiful Mazda Hatch but I wish navigating my music wasn't so hard.... I'd like them to give us a software update to fix that very awkward/difficult system.
Corolla and other Toyotas are more popular than Mazdas. Personally they are more spacious and more luxury than Mazdas, so in any sort of challenge, I would choose Toyota any day.
@@gregthesplintercell I like it a lot. No issues whatsoever as Toyota reliability is known for. Gas mileage is excellent. I do wish the back seats have a little more room. A little more hp would make the car more fun to drive but the 168hp is more than adequate for regular driving. Last, I wish Toyota would update the firmware to enable android auto. Currently, it has only carplay, and I am an Android phone user.
The fact that everyone is even comparing them says a lot about what mazdas been doing. Your right, Lexus interiors are better in materials but your also paying at least an extra 10k. Mazda interiors are really good quality not only for the price point but just good in general.
I have found that the Corolla hatchback does not have very much side and rear visibility, which the sedan has much more. Do the Mazdas have the same scenario?
I don't care how fancy you think the Mazda is you can have the Mazda I'm sticking with the Toyota cuz I've had Corollas and they go 300,000 miles and even more and I've had a Mazda B4000 pickup and that was a big problem
Toyota with the manual does 7.5 to 60 which is pretty dang close to the Mazda. Rear seat room on paper is less but seems better. You need to spend 27K for a manual Mazda 3 vice as low as 22K for the Corolla XSE with active rev matching. Toyota uses dual injection (no carbon build up) vice basic direct injection so more reliable. Better fuel economy for the Corolla 28 / 37. The Mazda hatch seems a bit bulbous without any character lines. I see the corolla as a winner for a basic daily driver and I never thought I would say that. Originally Mazda said the switch over to the torsion beam vice multilink would increase passenger room and cargo but both are less than the outgoing Mazda 3. In no way would I pay 27K for 186 HP. At that level just go for a GTI.
@@Plur307, the use of the preposition “vice,” a Latin borrowing, to mean “instead of” or “in place of.” (Think of the related term “vice versa,” which is also from Latin and means “conversely,” or “in reversed order.”)

I am a 4 time Mazda owner and want to like the new Mazda3 hatchback, but I'm not sure I do. That rear visibility is very concerning as I drive in an urban environment and I need to be visually aware of the traffic and activity all around me at all times without the aid of cameras and beeps. The interior looks very nice, and I have no doubt it will be reliable, but the exterior styling is not doing it for me. I love hatchbacks. The VW Golf, love, but no way am I owning a VW out of warranty, and I keep my cars a long time. Elantra GT, ok, but nobody seems to have them in stock. Civic, looks hideous. Kia Forte hatchback, I'm will to give a chance but it is not determined if the latest Forte5 will be sold in the US for 2020. The Corolla hatchback hits all the marks, and the price is good, and I'm sure it will be reliable, but Toyota is a laggard by not offering Android Auto. I *must* have phone integration in my next new car, and I'm not switching to i-Phone.
I heard the 2020 corolla hatchback will have android auto, and the dealership told me i can have android auto installed in my 2019 hb sometime this november once an update is released (but theres no guarantee so the 2020 is the safer bet)
@@aca2983 i only have 1000 miles on my corolla so far, but I have absolutely loved every mile of it. I take it on backroads on my commute back regularly and haven't hit any limits or understeering. So she thought the mazda had great style on the exterior and interior, excellent materials, great driving dynamics but was disappointed because it wasn't bubbly? Smh.. I'm a man not interested in bubbly. Then the guy pushes the driver seat all the way back and then throws a tantrum back seat. It's a hatchback. It's obviously not going to huge but offers plenty of practicality. I'm 5' 9", set the seat to my driving position and sat behind myself and thought it was pretty decent room. If your taller then 6' you might feel cramped. It's just me and my 12 year old son. Love the luxury and grown up vibe it has. This review was horrible. Bubbly and tantrums? Kids smh
Mazda is great...but the reliability is with Toyota...2019 Corolla SE six speed manual is what I have and will do me well for 15 years...with next to no problems...
And I always thought a Hatchback version of a Sedan meant better head and legroom despite its smaller size. Guess I was wrong all these years. Or... Manufacturers got it terribly wrong this time.
Get the Toyota folks. Had the Mazda3 for 2,500 miles and had to get rid of it. While it looks great on the surface, underneath is all crap. Rear view mirror glass fell out, drivers side seat control panel fell out, C pillar is thin as foil (press it in and you will see), the glove box is made of soda plastic, the rear seats won't latch back up all the time, the hood prop is thin as an antenna (why didn't Mazda use hood struts), the dashboard has some very annoying rattles inside, the paint is thin and won't hold up well, the ergonomics is terrible too- getting in and out in annoying and there is nowhere to rest your left arm because the arm rest is too low and the window sill is too high. This car looks pretty but it's a mess.
Sucks that you got a lemon. Most reviews from long term Mazda owners have few complaints. Hopefully you have the 🍋 law in your state so you didn’t lose any money on that purchase. ✌🏻✌🏻
The Mazda3 looks beautiful, and the Corolla is fun to drive. However, I would pick the Hyundai Elantra GT/i30 over the two, because it offers an amazing, stylish design with the fun driving experience, but that's just me.
Toyota really should have expanded on the 2017-19 designs of the Corolla. I parked by 3 2020 Corolla and they looked pretty bad compared to the previous generation
Grover Williams I have a Corolla Hatch in blue flame and personally think it looks great! I definitely prefer the Hatchback over the 2020 Corolla Sedans though. Those look much more boring.
At what point does comparing this become like apples and oranges, though? This video isn’t particularly helpful when making a real-world purchasing decision, as they’re comparing two vehicles with a large pricing difference. I think you can say the Mazda 3 is nicer, but $4k more is likely putting out of budget for a lot of people shopping for this class of vehicle. If possible, I’d love to see comparisons based on matching prices. In other words, what does $25k get you in one vs the other. If you’re shopping with a specific amount you’re willing to spend in mind (which any average person would), then that’s what you’d want to know.
The Corolla is $4,000 less across the board, offers more standard features and a more sophisticated suspension geometry and thus a better ride. I’d take the intelligent CVT with its physical first fear and higher efficiency advantage over the Mazda dated 6 Speed. I’d also take the Toyota’s intelligent manual transmission with auto rev match and capability to still offer adaptive cruise over the Mazda’s dated 6 speed manual. Thanks to it’s dated Powertrain, inferior suspension, and relatively high prices, the Mazda3 has essentially kicked itself out of both classes. It’s way too expensive for the compact class but lacks the substance of the luxury class. Mazda3 or Corolla hatch? Corolla hatch - no question. Mazda3 or Audi A3? Audi A3 - no question.
Drive one first, every reviewer has said they worried about the suspension but it's not a problem/noticeable. You're not gonna be tracking the thing, theyve also repeatedly stated its the most refined ride in the class by far, so really, just stop worrying about the suspension. Hmmm yes cvts known for their long term reliability but I will give toyota the benefit of the doubt. And to call a 6 speed outdated is really just childish, especially when it's one of the crispest for the price point (mazdas manual is only surpassed by Hondas). That plus clean looks, the best chassis, awd option, means that you wouldn't be able to tell much of the difference between an audi a3 and a Mazda3 except slightly in the transmission department and certainly in the price department, both upfront and for long term ownership
Abiril the Archer No one, literally only Mazda can be rocking a 6 Speed Auto in 2019 and not get lambasted for it. If this was any other brand it would be a problem. Mazda throws some foam and fake leather on the dash of their car and everyone thinks it’s a luxury car haha. It’s not. It’s a nice car, styling is beautiful, but the hardware is old. Mazda should be allowed to cut costs then pretend like they’re going “upmarket”. This is an economy car in drag.
@@Soh90 while I've had somewhat similar feelings I don't think this is necessarily true. I think the things that have been worked on (seating position, nvh, sound systems, gvc-plus, awd integration, redoing their entire infotainment, and even some quite silly things like tactile feedback of the buttons and knobs as well as the other stuff you mentioned) have been well done and it's quite a lot of stuff to be done. Now if the skyactiv-x engine has been as well done as the rest of it and does make the fuel efficiency gains they say it does, then there's very few things left in the car that haven't been updated. This is a "jumped up economy car" because they're changing so many different things to get into the "premium" segment, they can't do it all at once. Now you might mention the torsion beam, but by all testimonies it's not an issue, and if technology has progressed (cvts not being complete trash) I don't see why this one can't be an improvement as well, particularly because it is cheaper and requires less maintenance. The only thing that a car has at that point that they haven't touched is the transmission that you complain about. Would it be nice to see a ZF 8 speed? Sure, but which is the one that's going to make the practical difference, all the interior improvements or 2 more gears and really good shift times? Idk maybe it's just preference but I'm of the mind if it ain't broke don't fix it especially when the improvements are marginal and unimportant for the task. The gearbox is known to be reliable, changing both that and the engine unit may not be a good idea.
This is the same drivetrain that's been in the previous 3, and there hasn't been any outstanding issues with that car's drivetrain. The real issue with reliability in this car is all the little issues I've seen people have, like safety suite turning off for whatever reason, or the rearview mirror falling off, or the potential for the wheels to come off (that was an actual recall).
Matt McP I’m thinking of getting one of these 2 cars very soon. Can’t decide which tho. Obviously Toyota is known for reliability but how reliable would the Mazda3 be in comparison?
@@linoftw if you want manual, basically rule out the Mazda since it's very rare. But you should test drive both, and I think it'll be obvious to you which one you want. They're similar in that they're cheap 4 cylinder hatchbacks, but ones luxurious and one is more sporty fun. The Mazda even drives luxuriously, despite having more HP and torque, it feels slower or more refined. I picked the Mazda 3 because I decided I want a comfy and luxurious and sleeker (inside and out) car. I have a more sporty weekend car personally.
Summing up what Jodi is says, the missing piece from this generation Mazda 3 is the characteristic of multi link rear suspension driving dynamic. If Mazda claim their torsion beam so great I dare them to start putting torsion beam rear suspension on MX 5 and CX 9. @@gianfrancoa not true, cars haven't rusted since 2010 (it was a welding issue, not steel issue, Toyota uses the exact same steel). They have also had better reliability than Toyota for years now. The only thing that continues to inflate the resale value of Toyotas is the myths that you are currently spreading
gianfrancoa this is a lie!
Toyota Camry and se 2020 looks better tbh
I love Mazda's design! Such a head turner.
I own this Mazda model and I love how it feels luxurious and sporty. I love how it drives , pretty light.

Corolla price, fuel effeciency reliablity and resale value. Mazda for more luxury, performance, no cvt. The mazda premium feel and perfomance comes with a price but people will drive off with the cheaper, known for being reliable with resale value corolla, but i have sat in both corollas and mazda 3 and i love being in a mazda the more than corolla. Corollas feel bland while mazda feel expensive and executive

I honestly don’t like touch screens. What Mazda has done for me is perfect. I really really don’t like what Chevy has done for the new Colorado. It has ruined the truck. In my opinion.
First autoguide video I disliked due to conflicting statements
Duh....
the corolla looks great! way better than any previous corolla
I agree the new one looks better alot people in my city driving Toyota
Scotty wouldn't agree
@stop asking me to change my name!
This is a better cvt :)
stop asking me to change my name! Current Corollas are sold with the fix

I have both and the Corolla with a 6 speed manual transmission. The Toyota is much more fun to drive. Love both!

The front end of that Mazda though…. so beautiful! Looks like nothing else out there. ✌🏻
Some great points were made here. Mazda needs to bring back the Mazda3 Speed.

It’s funny.
Try to sit in the backseat of the Corolla. It can barely fit middle school teens
Mitul Jariwala “barely fits teens” as a full grown man sits back there. 😂
And seeing him in the Mazda barely fitting all cramped and twisted
@@dygardion9130 did that on purpose the front seat was far back. I saw other videos with 6ft adults sitting comfortable
MrPicky400 how do you know they didn’t put their seats forward?
The new Toyota hatchback is doing the same thing Mazda was doing with their Gen 1 Mazda 3 hatchback back 13+ years ago lol
Mazda 3 wins the battle. Ok, you slid the seats backwards all the way then tried sitting in the back making it look bad. I had no issues with passengers sitting in the back of my 3 hatch.
It was pretty funny though. Lol

Great video guys. I really liked the interior shots of the Mazda3. Now if you could do more podcast episodes....

I'm sorry but I drove both cars lately and the Mazda 3 is BY FAR the best car in years. The negative points you made...eh...I coudn't find any.
You cannot beat the nonlinear power with that dynamic force engine in the Toyota CHB. It's reminiscent of the Acura Integra Vtec.
Thats what happens when you let the wife make the descions
Eh personally I never have a car longer than 7 years
I never felt claustrophobic before, until I sat in a Mazda 3. Inside is super dark because of it’s tiny windows and you can’t see shit of what’s happening behind you, massive blind spot.
I see just fine out of mine, I guess when you are not a confident driver you need big windows
@@matezvicer5550 Damn, thats a salty fanboy response.
There's a trade-off in reference to the Mazda for looking so darn good
This did not sound nor feel like an unbiased comparison.
Corolla. No rear space boot/trunk. Mazda 3 triumph of style over space & vision! Try a Hyunda Elantra (i30) Hatch GT or Kia Cerato for warranty & all that's good.
Think carefully about long warranty periods, you have to ask why they do it.
Here in Australia the service costs for the Corolla over the 5 year warranty period is $175 per service or $875 for 5 years
I test drove the kia cerato GT and i liked it but my wife didn't.

@@peace4myheart How are you liking the Corolla?
@@gregthesplintercell I like it a lot. No issues whatsoever as Toyota reliability is known for. Gas mileage is excellent. I do wish the back seats have a little more room. A little more hp would make the car more fun to drive but the 168hp is more than adequate for regular driving. Last, I wish Toyota would update the firmware to enable android auto. Currently, it has only carplay, and I am an Android phone user.
There is no way the Mazada's interior is nicer then the interior of any modern Lexus
The Lexus is350's interior is getting pretty long in the tooth
The fact that everyone is even comparing them says a lot about what mazdas been doing. Your right, Lexus interiors are better in materials but your also paying at least an extra 10k. Mazda interiors are really good quality not only for the price point but just good in general.
The meme that consumers don't actually know what they want actually holds true here.
I have found that the Corolla hatchback does not have very much side and rear visibility, which the sedan has much more. Do the Mazdas have the same scenario?
I will go for Toyota
I don't care how fancy you think the Mazda is you can have the Mazda I'm sticking with the Toyota cuz I've had Corollas and they go 300,000 miles and even more and I've had a Mazda B4000 pickup and that was a big problem
Lol.. My 2014 mazda 3 has 120k miles on it and have had no issues what so ever. That toyota looks ugly and has a CVT smh.. Garbage
Why do you keep saying "vice"? You mean versus?
@@Plur307, the use of the preposition “vice,” a Latin borrowing, to mean “instead of” or “in place of.” (Think of the related term “vice versa,” which is also from Latin and means “conversely,” or “in reversed order.”)
Your justification doesn’t add up buddy mazda only cost a bit more because it offers more plain and simple, and overall a better car no matter how you look at it. This comparison wasn’t even necessary cause its as if both cars are in different class
Driver distraction is number 1 cause of accidents.
I like the mazda more but im also okay with the toyota.
What is there in a step above the Mazda3 that you can get a manual and a naturally aspirated motor in? sedan or hatch?
I find the manual 2.5 Mazda 3 is much faster then the auto 3 and the manual is more enjoyable.

Toyota has cvt which will have a great chance to fail after 100k like most, Nissan cvt being the worst.

@2WIREG That's the Hyundai Elantra sedan. I'm taking about the hatchback verison, called the Elantra GT here in North America, and the i30 elsewhere.
Toyota really should have expanded on the 2017-19 designs of the Corolla. I parked by 3 2020 Corolla and they looked pretty bad compared to the previous generation
@RISEUP Gamer Glad you like it. I think it looks awful. Maybe they will redesign when I trade my Corolla for a new Corolla

I prefer the Mazda overall and it’s transmission, but new hatch school of egg 🥚 styling is not my cup of tea. They ruined the hatch.

Corolla looks better!
Lmafoooimagine saying this about a 'Corolla'
The screen in the mazda 3 is so far away it wouldn't benefit for touch screen anyway. So complaining about that is stupid.
Abiril the Archer That’s a very good point. Well said
"intelligent CVT"
Hahahahahahahahahaha! Good luck.
Can anyone tell me what color is the mazda in the video?
Skyactive comes with a cost to reliability, ask a mechanic.
If you buy new every three or so years, you’re probably good to go.
I have the first gen Sky-activ in a 2013 3 hatchback. Zero issues.
So , for you CVT is better ? No way !
Maaaazdah.... much Canadian-ness going on.
Summing up what Jodi is says, the missing piece from this generation Mazda 3 is the characteristic of multi link rear suspension driving dynamic. If Mazda claim their torsion beam so great I dare them to start putting torsion beam rear suspension on MX 5 and CX 9. Forgot to mention Mazda North America still have the front head lights on when driving. Turn that off Mazda NA!
