They have several bluesy songs like "The Ballad of Curtis Loew" and they have some downers like "That Smell" which is about people burning their lives away with drugs. Another classic, which is kind of a downer is "Tuesday's Gone." You will definitely like that one, even though it is a bit more of a melancholy sort of song.
Yeah you should definitely check out "That Smell" @SyedRewinds, one of the better anti drugs songs out there. They have a ton of other notable songs as @Wes Baumguardner mentioned. "Workin for the MCA" is another one my favorites (the live 1976 version is pretty good), talking about the music industry.
Sweet Home Alabama is another EPIC song of their's worth checking out. It contains a line that's a rebuttal of a Neil Young song called Southern Man which delves into the horrors of the slavery that took place in the south. Their's an EPIC live version by CSNY from 1971 that has some amazing guitar work by Stills and Young.

He grew up to be fine man, and covers this song from time to time with his band. The message is simple, but so impactful. At the end of the day I just wanted my children to be satisfied with their life choices and decent human beings.

The two you've reacted to so far off their very first album unless you reacted to the live version of Freebird which I think maybe you did? And then that's actually right before they died. You know years later. But anyway, both of them are off the first album and that every album from them rocks in my view people sometimes say I think maybe it's their third album that they only like certain songs off of like Give Me Back My Bullets and that kind of thing but if you listen to that entire album, it's fire. They didn't have all that many albums before the plane crash but they were all solid and the supplemental material that came out before the plane crash not after, was pretty much Canon as well. There's a great little compilation called Lynyrd Skynyrd first and last that even has Ricky Medlock from Blackfoot singing lead because he was buddies of theirs and a tremendous musician, a great drummer guitar player and singer. You should check out him singing White Dove off of that one. But anyway I just wanted to say, maybe check out something off of their last album before the plane crash, this used to be ubiquitous on jukeboxes and bars everywhere I ever went. Plus you heard it on the radio all the time and plus of course I own the vinyl and played it all the time, laugh. It's called I know a little. PLEASE do the studio version, because although there is some decent live footage of them doing it and they totally kill it, this song is so a recorded and so are mixed and just so intense that it really deserves the best auditory experience the first time around I believe. Or if you're like me, I played it over and over 10 times the first time I ever heard it as a kid. It just makes you want to dance around the room and it certainly had that effect in a bar when it constantly got selected on the jukebox!

I'd say stay away from anything after "Street Survivors" which was thier last studio album before the plane crash. My favorites are "Tuesdays Gone" along with the 2 you've already reacted to on thier first Album, and "I need you", "Workin for MCA", and "The needle and the spoon" from "Second Helping" thier second album.
The producer of this album, their first (1973), Al Kooper, (co-founder of the band Blood, Sweat and Tears-you'll get into them later I'm sure) didn't think this song was good enough to be on the album. [Bandleader-lead vocalist] Ronnie Van Zant told Kooper, " you go wait outside until we call you back in. This song is going on the album whether you like it or not." Ronnie was a baaaad dude.
One of the most humorous songs in rock is "Gimme Three Steps" which is based on a real experience they had and only slightly embellished. It's a great song and fun to listen to. This is a very deep rabbit hole you've stepped into and every song mentioned in the comments is worth a reaction.

Love your reviews, Syed. As far as Lynyrd Skinner, for me, the best USA rock band. Their repertoire of songs is amazing because they're all so wonderfully crafter. The Ballad of Curtis Loew is very different but interesting and then they have a couple of great anti-drugs songs "The Needle and the Spoon" and "That Smell." They also have humorous songs like "Give me 3 Steps."

The southern part of the US was a stronghold for Christianity, which was incorporated into regional music and culture. You will still see references to working class, farming and Christian values in southern music whatever the genre, along with revival and gospel themes.
Now you have to do SHINEDOWN cover of Simple Man 👨. It ravels Lynyrd Skynyrd it’s more of a tribute. The late Ronnie Vanzants granddaughter is in the video. Judy Ronnie’s widow put Brent Smith lead singer of SHINEDOWN up for 16 months no charge. Brent said he would pay her back one day. Syed, I stumbled across this again and I haven't even started it but I heard you make the comment about as Brits you get fed from the coasts and so not a whole lot of info about the American south. Since we're talking about Lynyrd Skynyrd here. And I'm not meaning this to be monolithic by any means but it really plays a prominent role in a lot of thinking especially in rural areas. And not just in the South but particularly in the south. So what it is it's their attitude piece of a New York for example. It's a song called I'm a country boy. Even if you don't react to it I really wish you would check it out. It would give you so much Insight right there you'll hear the attitude you'll hear the phrases and a lot of it makes so much sense. I mean it's a song so it you know exaggerates slightly but really for a lot of people it's not an exaggeration. And this would be a huge insight for you. I hope you do it man.
Here's "Sweet Home Alabama" from that concert at Oakland. This song has the Honkettes doing backup. The middle girl is the sister of the guitarist with the shortest hair (Steve Gaines). They both died in the plane crash about 2 months later, along with Ronny Van Zant, the lead singer. A band manager and both pilots were also killed. Tragic loss! Ronny did probably 80% of the songwriting too. I hope this this is ok to mention, the southern states are also sometimes called the "Bible Belt" of America. So I think that's why the spirit of their music can be very uplifting and there is often a church organ in the mix. Others have mentioned the Allman Brothers for your next foray into Southern Rock, and I agree wholeheartedly. "Whipping Post" is my favorite, but's it's far from uplifting. I think you'll really like it.
I don’t know anybody who considers themselves somebody’s son, who isn’t moved by this track. It’s spiritual guidance of the highest kind, that reeks of the roots of simple and modest living in the Southern way, ala Flannery O’Connor or Hemingway. It’s hard to be so deep and be so direct, without also being cliched or corny is very difficult.
Skynyrd is good and a different flavor! Very popular in the Midwest for some reason. I always liked them! Southern Rock doesn’t get the respect it should for some unknown reason! Rock came from the South after all! Memphis Tennessee specifically in the Fifties! I really like and respect Mister Saturday Night Special in which they rail against the Cheap availability of Handguns! The 38 Caliber specifically! They warned about the dangers of Cheap Handguns. And asked why we don’t dump them all to the bottom of the Sea? And John Lennon was murdered with with a 38 Special. So they were Prescient even. I’m sorry to have to say this. Skynyrd are smart songwriters! Then they railed against drugs with What’s that Smell? Saying don’t stick that Needle in your Arm! Don’t be a Damn Fool! They were Right! On the documentary, "Muscle Shoals", they discovered Skynyrd and were the first to record them, shopping them around. There were no takers, but a couple of years later, they got on a tour , opened for The Who, and were stars after that. Now, Syed, you say that most of the music you hear from the states was from the coasts, but the middle of the country, particularly the South, is really the heart and soul of the country. The South merges Soul, Gospel, Rock, Rockabilly, C/W, and blues. I was upset when they put the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in Cleveland because it should have been Memphis,TN. The Memphis area is the epicenter for so much good music and a myriad of styles. If you want music with alot of feeling, that is the area to go.

Now you have to do SHINEDOWN cover of Simple Man 👨. It ravels Lynyrd Skynyrd it’s more of a tribute. The late Ronnie Vanzants granddaughter is in the video. Judy Ronnie’s widow put Brent Smith lead singer of SHINEDOWN up for 16 months no charge. Brent said he would pay her back one day. Syed, I stumbled across this again and I haven't even started it but I heard you make the comment about as Brits you get fed from the coasts and so not a whole lot of info about the American south. Since we're talking about Lynyrd Skynyrd here. And I'm not meaning this to be monolithic by any means but it really plays a prominent role in a lot of thinking especially in rural areas. And not just in the South but particularly in the south. So what it is it's their attitude piece of a New York for example. It's a song called I'm a country boy. Even if you don't react to it I really wish you would check it out. It would give you so much Insight right there you'll hear the attitude you'll hear the phrases and a lot of it makes so much sense. I mean it's a song so it you know exaggerates slightly but really for a lot of people it's not an exaggeration. And this would be a huge insight for you. I hope you do it man.

Here's "Sweet Home Alabama" from that concert at Oakland. This song has the Honkettes doing backup. The middle girl is the sister of the guitarist with the shortest hair (Steve Gaines). They both died in the plane crash about 2 months later, along with Ronny Van Zant, the lead singer. A band manager and both pilots were also killed. Tragic loss! Ronny did probably 80% of the songwriting too. I hope this this is ok to mention, the southern states are also sometimes called the "Bible Belt" of America. So I think that's why the spirit of their music can be very uplifting and there is often a church organ in the mix. Others have mentioned the Allman Brothers for your next foray into Southern Rock, and I agree wholeheartedly. "Whipping Post" is my favorite, but's it's far from uplifting. I think you'll really like it.
I don’t know anybody who considers themselves somebody’s son, who isn’t moved by this track. It’s spiritual guidance of the highest kind, that reeks of the roots of simple and modest living in the Southern way, ala Flannery O’Connor or Hemingway. It’s hard to be so deep and be so direct, without also being cliched or corny is very difficult.

Skynyrd is good and a different flavor! Very popular in the Midwest for some reason. I always liked them! Southern Rock doesn’t get the respect it should for some unknown reason!

I really like and respect Mister Saturday Night Special in which they rail against the Cheap availability of Handguns! The 38 Caliber specifically! They warned about the dangers of Cheap Handguns. And asked why we don’t dump them all to the bottom of the Sea?
And John Lennon was murdered with with a 38 Special. So they were Prescient even. I’m sorry to have to say this. Skynyrd are smart songwriters!
Then they railed against drugs with What’s that Smell? Saying don’t stick that Needle in your Arm! Don’t be a Damn Fool! They were Right!

On the documentary, "Muscle Shoals", they discovered Skynyrd and were the first to record them, shopping them around. There were no takers, but a couple of years later, they got on a tour , opened for The Who, and were stars after that. Now, Syed, you say that most of the music you hear from the states was from the coasts, but the middle of the country, particularly the South, is really the heart and soul of the country. The South merges Soul, Gospel, Rock, Rockabilly, C/W, and blues. I was upset when they put the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in Cleveland because it should have been Memphis,TN. The Memphis area is the epicenter for so much good music and a myriad of styles. If you want music with alot of feeling, that is the area to go.
