My respects to Notch, Mojang, teams of Minecraft server devs, mod devs, plugin creators, Minecraft youtubers and everyone else that made so many millions of childhoods. It wasn't THE game of my childhood but its made some of the best memories I've had with my long time best friend who's moved country recently. I'm over 18 now and I'm just having a great weekend looking through nostalgia, I can still quote some old Minecraft lets plays to this day and smile looking back on them.
Mojang was honestly a shitty company after notch left, they were playing everything so god damn safe and made sure to not do anything that could even slightly change the progression line. I'm regaining some hope though since the most recent update seems to be actually very interesting and makes the world feel more full, my god the last 10 years felt like purgatory though.
Honestly crazy how this only has 29K views, this made me feel like I just lived the through 15 years Minecraft has had. One criticism I have is the fact that the legacy console editions weren’t really touched upon, because 4J studios were really cooking with those ones. Wii U edition, Switch edition, and PS vita edition weren’t even mentioned, or the old battle, tumble, and glide minigames. Just kinda wished those were mentioned.

I've been on a minecraft documentary binge the past week or so and counting. This is bringing so much peace to my inner child. Wasn't long ago, in 2016, when I would stay up all night in skype calls which moved to discord calls. Whether it was building... mindlessly collecting resources on our multiplayer realm, building and collecting money for our skyblock island on our favorite server, teaming up and waging wars all night against other kids just doing the same things we were doing. Feels like we all just grew up and apart a bit, covid came around and that was a blast being able to kick back like old times again. Some things are best left alone as memories, rather than constantly trying to recreate them. Trust me, we tried for a while... just like I know every other friend group did too. Cherish each other and the memories you've created. Everything is happening as it happens... in this day and age, your scope can be as wide as way back when all the way to all the unknowns in the future simply because of social media and the internet. Cool you had a segment on 2b2t. I joined on June 2nd 2016 when I was Rusher’s video. I’ve played there to this day. I remember the dark age of Minecraft. I was still playing through that time.
The ending literally made me cry. It’s an art to be able to connect a person with the video so much it affects their emotions. It has been a journey. Good job with this incredible video, I would never be able to pull something like that off. Never.❤❤❤❤❤
I distinctly remember in high school playing in 2009, and talking with friends on teamspeak about how the developer was planning on adding enemies eventually and how fun that would be. How far we've come. The amount of flashbacks and nostalgia i experienced listening to the first 15 minutes, all those memories since i almost forgot about. Especially optifine, i dont know why but that unlocked some core memories in my brain of tweaking settings and being amazed how far i could crank my render distance on my old laptop.
great video, did you know that other countries have their own like minecraft related history, like there are massive spanish minecraft trends and youtubers and a community that is still around and still tight nit, and all these came from different spanish minecraft smps and lets play series both modded and vanilla. same thing goes for brazil and france and italy
I started playing minecraft in elementary school when it was still in beta, and I remember coming home from school and playing from the moment I got in the door until the moment I had to go to bed, only taking breaks to eat dinner or watch the latest videos from CaptainSparklez and Yogscast, etc... It was crazy how that game could suck me in and I'd play for six hours with no food or water or bathroom breaks... I just redownloaded the game a couple weeks ago as an adult for some nostalgia and to see how far the games come, and it's truly amazing... While I can't drain as much time into it as I once could, it's still incredible how easy it is for me to log on for an hour before going to sleep, then looking at the clock and realizing it's 2am. Some things never change lol.. thanks for making this video it was cool taking a stroll down memory lane
There will always be people playing minecraft, it’s like Lego. My introduction to minecraft was when I found a game disc in the trash, no case, a few scratches, thought I’d see if it worked and there were no issues. I did have a few years of not playing but I’m nearly 40 now and recently got the game again.
Oof i remember being a little kid and watching and rewatching those old minecon videos and wishing for one day to go to one. Sucks how they stopped doing those cons
Wow, thank you for this video. That surely took a lot of work to collect all this info into one massive piece. It was a true pleasure to reminisce about all the things that are history now, to some of us who were there when they took place. I could recognize a lot of these events you've mentioned, but I've also learned few new ones, like the recreation of Harry Potter in Minecraft - that's sick! Nonetheless, a very nostalgic trip for me as well. The first version of Minecraft I had played was Beta 1.7.3, though I had been following one Minecraft youtuber since late Alpha, who also inspired me to give it a go. At the time little did I know that I'd still be playing it, 12 years later...
I've been playing Minecraft since 2011. When I think back, most of my memories of Minecraft are from 2011 and 2012 though and scarily, popular things that come after those years I consider "new" and "immature". Time has really sped up. I'm old.
i was one of those "uncool kids" who played minecraft during its craze, and its downfall before its revival, and I still play because it's a blocky game with unlimited possibilities.
MISSING MAJOR ISSUES+Video Idea: This is a good video but it also ignore a very large party of history, Pocket,-Bedrock Edition which gets less representation because of the UA-cam scene. In 2016, a pre-Bedrock Pocket Edition server called Lifeboat had more players than Hypixel or Mineplex. The server: "Brokenlens" pioneered mini-games on the old Pocket Edition. Even before the Better Together Update, pocket Edition players have created stuff which rivals Java Edition, even with less resources. Servers on Pocket-Bedrock have a long history, it will be forgotten soon at this pace of there's isn't enough attention given to it. Bedrock Edition is the only Minecraft for the vast majority of people throughout history has only been on Bedrock Edition. I think it's unfair to give Java so much attention because it's not proportional at all.
As you already said nobody pays any attention to Bedrock, its mostly for people that don't have a PC or have friends that don't have a PC. Java Edition was and will always be the original Minecraft. Pocket/Console and Bedrock Edition are just simplified ports or awfull remakes. Microsoft obviously treats them the other way around because they can't milk Java Players for Microtransactions. While covering them would be interresting, that would probably blow the video way out of proption, it even simplifies a lot of stuff while sticking mostly to the, now Java Edition of the game.
@@user-to7ds6sc3p Java Edition is outdated in many ways. Who cares if it was the "original game" if you've got to install mods to not have performance issues. For the vast majority of people why bother? Most people have played Bedrock for the majority of history. UA-camrs are the exception, but not all of them are on Java either. Bedrock players outnumber those on Java at least 3:1, it's not even close. Bedrock is the majority of the community.
@@Nicetheforumer console always outnumbers PC, thats nothing new. Who cares if Bugrock has better performance if the game is not stable enough to not just randomly kill you, or phase you though the floor, or whatever stupid bugs it has. Not to mention random and slower redstone, that makes it impossible to replicate many java contraptions. Ever thought about that UA-camrs have a reason to use Java? Javas performance can be fixed by grabing a premade Modpack, a todler could do that, good luck fixing Bedrocks issues.
Probably not very, considering they are not that old, and on top of that, almost every child got those books from a scholastic book fair as they came out. I would be shocked if they were even slightly rare or worth anything.

I got my first job is 2013 and Mincraft was huge but I always just joked about "some block game the kids are obsessed with" my ex got Minecraft for me to try out on his PS4 he didn't like it but he figured it was something I could get into........ I spent more time on Minecraft than I did at work 😅 he brought the game in July for my birthday and by October I logged over 600 hours. When I say I slept, ate and dreamed Minecraft it's actually insane. When I wasn't playing I was watching build tutorials and lets plays, when I was playing I had them playing on my phone 😂 obsessed isn't even the word i need a stronger description! I only stopped playing between 2018 and 2020 cause me and that ex broke up, and it hurt to love something i associated with him but that pandemic kicked me right back into it and I've only been playing 2-5 hours a day and on my breaks at work.
I'm old enough to have bought and played Minecraft back in beta with friends and that is by far the best time I had with the game. I'm not knocking it since then but there was something special about playing with my buddies back then on our own servers and having to occasionally trash the whole server because of the constant major updates. Was really fun pre Microsoft. Having said that, I'm in my mid 30s now and my kid loves playing Minecraft so I jump on with her and we play together. It's still a good time.
Oh yes exactly, 2016-2018 years - "the decline" of Minecraft. Times when players leave Minecraft, here are the statistics of active players for the year 2016 - 40 million 2017 - 55 million ( + 15 million) 2018 - 75 million ( + 20 million) Oh stop, wait
Minecraft is the best game ever made. And it's all thanks to captiansparklez I remember coming across the tnt music video and I was hooked I Bing watched all of his let's play stuff until he started the hexxit 1.6.4 modpack and then I got a laptop on the next black Friday and I got to play it along with him (I had played be4 with with my cousins on there accounts at there house it was never anything substantial) and here I was at 15fps and then I got a better laptop he released so many let's plays and music videos. And I have purchased minecraft on every platform available. Java mobile Xbox 360 Xbox one xbox bedrock switch. And here I sit still playing minecraft cause when it starts to get old, there's new mods and modpacks new updates servers with friends minigames. And it's all cause of captiansparklez he's my favorite minecrafter and youtuber that still plays. The only 2 youtubers I every liked more aren't on the platform anymore.
My husband & I started playing MC in 2020. We were stuck in the house taking care of 12 family members with different stages of illness and had to be awake for regular vital signs check-ups. We had heard of minecraft but had never watched anything. I'll never forget the 30am first multiplayer of us huddled in a dirt house with a campfire, breaking one block to see if it's morning and being jumpscared by a spider crawling in 🤣
beauty about minecraft, is you get to tell you own stories, and for java players, choose whatever version of the game you want to play... i play 1.8.9, 1.12.2, and beta 1.7.3
Minecraft is such a huge part of so many lives man. The nostalgia is insane. I still play for like 2 months every year once the current cod starts to die off. It’s the only game I consistently go back to. I remember watching rooster teeth’s let’s plays every week

I just want to add something. A few months after The Yogscast did the dropper video, a Swedish youtube channel called Stamsite did som dropper videos with his friend. The first video he made on the dropper has 12 milion views. That is really impressive because they are speaking swedish through out the whole series. It was also Stamsite who was the first to use the rainbow spiral with the water bottle in the thumbnail. A lot of people copied his thumbnail. It is the firt video to pop up when you search "the dropper"

The chrusing wave of nostalgia, joy, friendships built, friendships ended, cause for bullying, expressions of creativity, hours of sleep sacraficed, rage, excitement, everything; really hit me while watching this. Never realized how much minecraft was at the heart of my childhood and now adulthood and im glad we all have something we can share worldwide
Bautafel Video, i Love it. I saw myself in a few moments doing this or that as a child. I started playing the game when I was 6 on my dad's PC and it still accompanies me to this day. I haven't had a moment like this in a long time where I have to think about the whole video again and my memories make me happy. Thank you for showing me my memories again. I don't think about it much because I have to work a lot and on days like this when I think about where to put my work and if I see a videos like this that take me back to my childhood, it's perfect. What you have done is worth gold.❤Thank you so much, I hope there are many more videos like this from you ❤
Its crazy to see what my big break from minecraft between 1.2.5 which was the modding heaven for me personally and like 1.17 or so made me miss when it comes to nostalgia Seeing someone talk about all those things I didnt even register while Im thinking that I saw so much
It’s so weird how I remember vividly 1.2.1 being the end of classic mc. I stopped playing around like 1.7-1.8 but man it was weird seeing how quickly even mojang caved to the wants of every kid playing the game. It went from weekly updates adding all sorts of stuff to slow churning of lower quality content. 2012 was the best year for mc simply because it was the last time we had what the game was while still having the steamroller of progress moving forward the way it is today.
I started playing Minecraft before they implemented hunger when your only goal was to get diamonds or whatever personal goal you said, but everyone had a collective goal you’re good at Minecraft if you get full diamond gear I only played for 30 mins dig a hole staircase and I was hooked

"The ULTIMATE Minecraft Retrospective" by @MuntChunck: Finally, a worthy opponent! Our battle will be LEGENDARY!
There will always be people playing minecraft, it’s like Lego. My introduction to minecraft was when I found a game disc in the trash, no case, a few scratches, thought I’d see if it worked and there were no issues. I did have a few years of not playing but I’m nearly 40 now and recently got the game again.
even if this doesnt go viral now, historians will watch this in 100 years
Oof i remember being a little kid and watching and rewatching those old minecon videos and wishing for one day to go to one. Sucks how they stopped doing those cons

Bro these Minecraft’s songs and mods were my whole childhood this video brought back so much
every video keeps getting better
I'm old.
Welcome to the old club.
I started playing around November-decemeber 2011 it was a time to be alive for sure
I started playing in 2012, 2012-2014 were the most amazing years of my life

MISSING MAJOR ISSUES+Video Idea:
This is a good video but it also ignore a very large party of history, Pocket,-Bedrock Edition which gets less representation because of the UA-cam scene.
STOP THE LONG PARAGRAPHS
@@user-to7ds6sc3p Java Edition is outdated in many ways. Who cares if it was the "original game" if you've got to install mods to not have performance issues. For the vast majority of people why bother?
Most people have played Bedrock for the majority of history. UA-camrs are the exception, but not all of them are on Java either. Bedrock players outnumber those on Java at least 3:1, it's not even close. Bedrock is the majority of the community.
@@dheirbrj8613 no
@@Nicetheforumer console always outnumbers PC, thats nothing new.
1:13:49 I haven’t seen anyone else mention it but pokemon red came out on the Gameboy in 1996. You’re thinking of the 3DS Virtual Console port.
Crazy I Own All Four Hand Books How Rare Are They?

I love cars
I'm old enough to have bought and played Minecraft back in beta with friends and that is by far the best time I had with the game. I'm not knocking it since then but there was something special about playing with my buddies back then on our own servers and having to occasionally trash the whole server because of the constant major updates. Was really fun pre Microsoft. Having said that, I'm in my mid 30s now and my kid loves playing Minecraft so I jump on with her and we play together. It's still a good time.
I can't watch this because I will cry from nostalgia and my eyes would be blinded by the tears

14:24 it's not the longest Minecraft Lets Play. Gronkh from Germany has 1.604 episodes.
Oh yes exactly, 2016-2018 years - "the decline" of Minecraft. Times when players leave Minecraft, here are the statistics of active players for the year
2016 - 40 million
2017 - 55 million ( + 15 million)
2018 - 75 million ( + 20 million)
Oh stop, wait
The only 2 youtubers I every liked more aren't on the platform anymore.
if you watching this your likely in your late teens early 20s.... my almosty 40 year old ass watching this 2 hour Minecraft video.. i feel old..

Minecraft is one of the biggest games in the world, if not the biggest. How could a small indie game with no funding and only one developer become the phenomena it is today? Let's take a trip down memory lane together, and find out 👇
If you're an avid Minecraft player, or know the way around the game, you can skip this part. Before we look through the history books, let's summarize how this epic game is played out. Minecraft is arguably the most influential of sandbox games. The player is dropped into a large randomized open world (actually infinite!) with biomes such as mountains, forests, caves, plains and oceans - with no specific goal or objective. Progression can only be reached through an Achievements system. The world consists of cubes, or blocks, which you can destroy, remove, build or replace. It also has a night/day cycle. Depending on the set difficulty level, players need to eat and defend themselves from hostile mobs during the night.

Through various Game Modes chosen at the start of each new game, players will experience a different adventure. If you just want to focus on building amazing things, you should choose Creative Mode. If you want a real adventure, boom, Adventure Mode is for you. If you want "the real deal" struggling for survival, Survival Mode is the perfect fit. These various modes makes the game even more replayable.
The beginning
Alright, now you know how the game is played out. It's time to learn how it all started. Minecraft is the brainchild of the Swedish programmer Markus "Notch" Persson who previously worked at the video game developers King and later jAlbum. Before laying all of his focus on Minecraft, Notch developed a few prototypes during his off-hours, inspired by popular games at the time. Among the prototypes were RubyDung, a base-building game, and Infiniminer, a block-based mining game. I think we all see how the ideas behind Minecraft were being formed.
The first edition of Minecraft, called Java Edition, was made by Notch during a weekend in early May 2009. The game was initially released to the public in May 17 on the TIGSource forum, a forum for Independent game developers. After feedback from his peers, Notch updated the game to, which nowadays is called, the Classic version. A few more updates were released during the next couple of months, the Indev and Infdevs versions, before the first major update, Alpha, was released June 30 2010. It was around this time that Minecraft was beginning to pick up speed.
Ethos has the longest running minecraft Lets Play? Thats not true, atleast not internationally
A German Lets player I used to watch back then did over 1000 Episodes in Minecraft and many episodes were like 30-60 Minutes long
HIS NAME IS GRONKH OFCOURSE
I just want to add something. A few months after The Yogscast did the dropper video, a Swedish youtube channel called Stamsite did som dropper videos with his friend. The first video he made on the dropper has 12 milion views. That is really impressive because they are speaking swedish through out the whole series. It was also Stamsite who was the first to use the rainbow spiral with the water bottle in the thumbnail. A lot of people copied his thumbnail. It is the firt video to pop up when you search "the dropper"
That livestream was actually uploaded to UA-cam 12 years ago! It’s just now the uploader made it public

A video like this was never going to be able to cover everything, but you did a really good job nonetheless
I started playing Minecraft before they implemented hunger when your only goal was to get diamonds or whatever personal goal you said, but everyone had a collective goal you’re good at Minecraft if you get full diamond gear
