Ariel was obsessed with human world long before she saw Eric but people forget that. She wasn’t just boy crazy.
THANK YOU!
She wanted to add him to her collection... Mwahahahaha!
Sara Samaletdin *just is the operative word there. She was obsessed with the human world, and yes she was boy crazy to the point that she wilfully disobeyed her father.
her father destroyed everything she loved and never listened to her...
fabs She almost destroyed her kingdom and brought her father down to degradation and had to be saved by a prince because she couldn't save herself.
As a European, I'm more shocked at the news that people didn't know that The Mermaid was a fairytale by Andersen!😂
... as a person who reads, i was shocked also :-)
Same lol
It may be a fairy tale, but it's still a European fairy tale.
Don't underestimate stupidity since America is unfortunately dominated by pop culture. And now a black girl is cast to play a redhead. 😫
should pass this movie waste of tickets ...
I dunno about Ariel being "boy-crazy" I think that's a common misconception like shes always been obsessed with the surface world and always wanted to be part of it, I think Eric was just a catalyst for her actions.
THATS HOW I ALWAYS SAW IT!! She stoped at nothing to get what she wanted ; TO BE HUMAN! Marrying the prince was just a bonus , and the only way to stay human.
Kind of like Eleven from Stranger Things
every bad eventthat has happened in the 1989 version of the little mermaid, is Arial's fault, because she did not listen to her father.
For real, did anyone watch the Part of Your World sequence, or did they fall asleep through it?
FINALLY! SOME SAID IT! ..... In fact since I was a child I always perceived Ariel's song as "Part of THAT world" not "Part of YOUR world" because that's the actual line in the song not "YOUR", the reprise yes but the main song it self NO. Ariel loved the land WAY before she met Eric.
It makes you think that casting Melissa McCarthy was a wise move. Now, if the movie flops (IF it flops), they can just blame Melissa: "Man, Melissa McCarthy is a movie-killer -- look what she did to Little Mermaid!"
Melissa McCarthy already destroyed this film. Plus, the thought of a singing crab is really creepy.
That’s the first piece of logic I’ve heard since this crap exploded
The casting is crazy altogether, but I think they'll all do a phenomenal job.

That's because she's making things up to suit her agenda.
Have you heard the soundtrack?? It's Caribbean music. Ariel is a fictional character in every way, let her be black. We've seen enough white princesses. There's always Cinderella and Belle.
@@gec03004 Not for long if you let this continue to happen to literally every character ever. Triss from the Witcher is also a black woman for no reason.

This move by Disney makes sense because Aquaman already did the "OG Ariel".

@UCX4rdg7SOpMPaR_PIg6TSQA you do realise that Black people exist world wide right??? heck when you say "islander" the average person thinks of jamaica, puerto rico or cuba etc all places mentioned have a HUGE black population, if not a Black majority

And as a lifelong fan of the Little Mermaid, I have to point out that the story is NOT set in the Caribbean. Every official Disney source I've seen places Atlantica, and Eric's kingdom, in the North Atlantic ocean.
I think it's because of Sebastian's Caribbean accent that makes people like Grace think that. Although ironically, nobody else speaks with that accent except Sebastian, but hey. Why focus on details right? ;) lol.
Sailor Pluto, Guardian of Time who cares she’s black. Don’t worry 😉 plenty of black characters will be biracial or surrounded by a white cast in most movies to come.
@@thewolfofwallstreet627 Sebastian's accent was a choice made by Howard Ashman to make the character more fun.
Yeah not sure why everyone is saying it’s in the Caribbean
@@Graestra because historically speaking the time that this would have been written.....Denmark had a huge footprint in the Caribbean so anyone who was willing to do their own research on the topic would know that this story was based off of Caribbean Folklore.
They would also know that the red hair was just a choice and in other adaptations the hair was different in color "Splash" a film that came out in 83? She had blonde hair, but her skin tone is correct, so most of you will not have an issue with that.
LMFAO. Where was the outrage with Mamoa playing Aquaman. Although, I guess Ariel is more popular than Aquaman.
Aquaman was always biracial. Half-human, half-Atlantean.
Aqua man was always biracial ariel is white Danish not balck carabian
Aquaman isnt really white though no matter what anyone says aquaman was never really white and mamoa did have some back lash but not alot
Genetics isn't the debate here, but the LOOKS. Aquaman is a Blonde, White character. Momoa isn't. Backlash, if any, was non-existent. Also, there's lore that predate any Danish publication and those mermaids sure as hell weren't white.
Gingers are more of a minority than those of color, barely any of gingers are actually represented and been taken from their roles to pander. Irony of this all is utter ridiculous
First of all, just because ONE character is obviously caribbean it does not mean that the whole context of the movie was set there. Crabs are known for migrating extreme distances in real life. Furthermore, the castle in the animated series was actually inspired by the Chateau de Chillon which is in SWITZERLAND. And even if it was NOT, this castle to me has always seemed more Mediterranean than anything else, buts thats another topic. Regarding Prince Eric, if Disney is going to go through the culturally accurate route, then he should most definitely NOT be BLACK. The Spaniards were known for colonizing and settling in many islands of the Caribbean and like I mentioned before his castle has a more spanish-italian-mediterranean vibe to it, so it would make sense that they would try to replicate that in the Caribbean upon settling there.
Anyway, I am just so sad about this choice, and it really bothers me that people think it has something to do with racism, no one is doubting how incredibly talented Halle Bailey is, but this just WAS NOT the role for her. I was talking with my friend that is a redhead and she was telling how sad she was that the only princess that she felt physically identified with will now be altered. Sure they have Merida, but who are we kidding, she's not nearly as iconic as Ariel.
And it's not about inclusion because we all know that if Tiana were ever cast as a Caucasian, the media would not celebrate it, it's the double standard that really gets to me. Btw, I am not from the US, and in my country a lot of people are very sad about this choice. I hope this movie does poorly at the box office so that Disney does not do this ever again. But I doubt it, these movies like you sometimes say are just too big too fail.
How can u be such selfish? Because you don't have what u want, doesn't mean that all the development must fail because you weren't satisfied? Are u kidding ? Let me tell you something, this mermaid movie will explode in box office, do you know why? Because its a revolution ...the time has changed, we aren't in the past where black were always seen in all bad ways. Black panther proved that you can get a black lead and earn a 1billion $..for the story of your friend , I gonne ask her to shut her fuck up...and u too, shut that deep dumbass mouth. Have u watched the last xmen Dark phoenix ?, jean is redhead, why doesn't your friend doesn't see herself as jean grey or recognize her as Jean grey ? Tell me, because you guys know only talking the shit on internet and lying as fuck. Its not the hair color who do the movie, but how the scenario is written with talented actress . lets take Dark phoenix movie, she was redhead, but her movie was so lame and pittyful, they lost alot of million, is not the redhead importance but how the movie is . you friend's reason is so fucking retarded and I beat, its even not your friend's reason but your own thinking...hidden behind that hypothetic friend story...

The 1989 Little Mermaid DID NOT TAKE PLACE IN THE CARIBBEAN. If you listen to the directors commentary they explain they set the film in the mediterranean as opposed to a northern Europe, so Ariel would be attracted to the warm weather after being in the cold sea (Erics castle is based on mediterranean architecture). The ONLY caribbean character is Sebastian: lyricist howard Ashman wanted to bring a calypso-flavor to the music of the film, so he suggested making the character Jamaican, as opposed to british, as he was originally conceived. Listen to the commentary! Watch the making-of doc!
Side note: Aladdin DOES go in the vault, and featured a princess of color. Mulan and Pocahontas dont go in the vault cause they were less culturally impactful/successful. It has nothing to do with the color of the characters.
Yup.... Eric lives in Greece.

I hate the misconception that Ariel wanted to get world for a boy. She was always interested in the world above from the start, way before she even knew who Prince Eric was.
I think this is sad, I come from Denmark and I am a red head.
When I was younger people used to teased me about it,
and the only princess I could really se my self in was Ariel.
I know that there’s other little girls out there that feel the same way i do,
because there are some days that I work in a kindergarten.
In that kindergarten there are some small red head girls like myself,
and they are really happy to see someone that also have red hair like them,
plus that they’re favorite princesses is Ariel.
This should be the top comment, IMO.
Annesofie Gregersen I think they plan to dye her hair red. Also, the other Ariel will still exist and you can watch that one if you prefer.
Annesofie Gregersen, I feel similarly, I have quite a bit of Danish and Irish blood in me. I'm a redhead and was often teased for it when I was young as well. I went through a phase where everything had to be Ariel, look there's a princess who has red hair like me (well not like me, she a cartoon redhead so its unnatural red) and it was a huge confidence boost. Hopefully, they'll dye her hair but given the picture of the new cartoon Ariel in her post, I don't think they will. I suppose on the plus side we always have Princess/Queen Mera and she's pretty awesome.
What are y’all crying about?? What about Merida from Brave?? Is she not also a red headed Disney princess??🙄
You'll always have the animated movie. Growing up, I had no princess I could relate to. People made fun of more than my hair. I'm really quite happy to see the casting.

Historically, Poseidon is an Ancient Libyan god. *Herodotus wrote in his histories, "The name of the god Poseidon is worshipped first among the Libyans."* The Greeks called the Western Sudan or Sahara, Libya. Technically he's an Ancient African.

It was. Unfortunately, people who want racebending of the role will fabricate an excuse even when there isn't one.
It was. Ariel probably never had red hair. The little mermaid has never been true to the original.
The sea in the Little Mermaid was clearly tropical. Many of the plants and animals in the sea cannot be found close to the coast of Denmark. It has been hypothesized for years that the Little Mermaid was set around the Mediterranean or Caribbean.
@@bukster337 Hypothesis is fine, but it isn't fact. Shoulda, coulda, woulda... the fact is that it was not set in the Caribbean. DISNEY says so. Check out the Disney wiki and they clearly state that the setting was Denmark. When the 1989 film was made, they envisioned it as being Danish. Maybe they didn't do their homework with fish, maybe they took some artistic license with rocks because they liked the visual... I can't peek inside their minds to know why they did what they did. But that doesn't change the setting of the movie. If they want to retcon it, then that's their prerogative -- I've got no problem with that. But call a retcon a retcon. Don't pretend that it isn't a retcon. I hope Halle does well, but let's don't try to rewrite history to justify the decision.

You can't use the Hans version in this argument. It's not the same story. If anything the Disney version is Fan Fiction of the Hans version. Nothing about Danish culture is mention in the Disney version. Everyone speaks English and with American accents. Or the chef with his French accent. The fish are tropical so that suggest that Ariel lived in a tropical area. And most importantly the mermaid gets a happy ending in the Disney version. The Danish mermaid story is a scary story not a children's fairy tale.

@@terencemotley4815 he is literally the only thing that is Caribbean in the whole movie literally the token black guy
It actually doesn't. The setting of the Little Mermaid looks too warm to be Denmark, or any of the northern European countries for that matter. The filmmakers stated that they were inspired by Mediterranean architecture and locations when creating the setting of the Little Mermaid. The movie most likely takes place in Italy or Spain, or any Mediterranean country. Also, in the original tale by Andersen, he describes a setting that does not sound like a Scandinavian country at all, and its known that he had a strong love for the Mediterranean sea. As for the remake, who knows? They might go for a tropical, Caribbean vibe from what I've been hearing.

Literally one google search will show you that the little mermaid does in fact take place in Denmark
Prince Eric is from Denmark and it's set in waters near by, not the Caribbean.
I can tell you, Poland is not handling this announcement well.. It's not gonna be only America's issue
What is the problem?
It’s an issue in Mexico as well.
Good. Whites always get mad when they get excluded, but expect others to just put up with it. Now go cry.
Movie Lover 89 At least in Mexico the problem is people love how Ariel looks in the original movie, so that’s how they want her to look in the live action one. Also the “diversity” argument doesn’t work when it usually means an African American actor gets the part.
Natalia Herrera I totally agree. I believe ppl are just mad because they grew up with the character and she will forever be a fair skinned ginger to them. In my honest opinion Disney should just stop mass producing those dull remakes and create a new IP with a diverse and interesting cast. But cashing in on nostalgia is just too damn easy for them.
I’m getting a lot of Wrinkle in Time vibes from these castings.
It's gonna flop. The live-action The Little Mermaid will fail, just like the way A Wrinkle in Time have done.
@@ajpat9620 didn't you bros say this about Aladdin and Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman?
But you were so right with "BladeRunner 2049", "Shazam" and "Solo"
So any movie that has black ppl in it is a wrinkle in time casting? 🤦🏿♂️
@Tazmon Sims Aladdin didn't cast the roles inappropriately for the region. Aladdin is a story set in Asia, so the casting was appropriate. And the only sin that Captain Marvel committed was making Mar-Vell a woman, which was just a bit of petulant feminism on the part of Marvel that was a last minute change. Carol Danvers is still a character consistent with the comics. But The Little Mermaid is casing a black actress to play Ariel. Never mind that this is a European fairy tale written by a Danish author, but a mermaid, a character that lives exclusively underwater, is really gonna look like someone from Africa?
@Dj Genius No, any movie that casts black people where no black people should be is A Wrinkle In Time casting. The Little Mermaid is a EUROPEAN fairy tale written by a European author. No black people's involvement whatsoever. Also, a dark-skinned mermaid seems highly illogical considering they spend all their time underwater, away from the sunlight. Even Orcas are white as snow underneath.

Where in the 1989 film does it say that it takes place in the Caribbean? Just because Sebastian is a Caribbean crab does not mean the backdrop is the Caribbean. It’s clearly a European backdrop. Sebastian is the only character with a Caribbean accent. That comment is inaccurate.
I think Grace mentioned how the design and back drop is reflects the Caribbean.
I think Grace just assumed Sebastian's ethnicity and/or nationality. Also, I guess there are no white people who live in the Caribbean, so he could not possibly have been a Caucasian crab (like that exists, lol). But a crab (red/pink) is certainly closer in hue to a Caucasian than a Negro, for that matter. Lol, this is so ridiculous all around.
Not only because of sebastian, all of the wildlife, the rocks, are from the Atlantic sea. Do a research, it's not just Grace that says it takes place there.
If a character was black in a film. And in a remake, they decided to cast a white person for that character. People would lose their minds.

But Grace the castel of prince Eric wasn´t Caribbean, it was inspared on a true Spanish Castel. The cast of a caribbean character (Sebastian) was on last minute. Where did you found that the setting of the animated movie was Caribbean?
Efeye089 The Spaniards is among one of the many Europeans empires that colonized the Caribbean.........
Base Benthem thank you! Prince Eric’s “castle” can be a Summer palace of some sorts. Plus, Atlántica, means from the Atlantic huge ocean, she can swim from place to place!

But that dosen't proof my question, where is the clue that is a Caribian culture on the animated movie?
In that case. We can agree that little marmeid could be in every part of Mexico or Southamerica exept for Brazil.

The only clue that we have or... I far remember. Is the fact that could be seting in some plece on the atlantic Ocean... But the problem of this is that Atlantic ocean divide Europe and Africa for North and Soud America. So again. Could be in so many places.

Sean 85 drag queens aren’t just ‘copying black women’ drag is female illusion meaning all females, no matter the colour. The inspiration for Ursula was the drag queen Divine who was white and didn’t ‘act black’ so a drag queen would be best
Ursula was fashioned after a drag queen. It would have been awesome if they continued it

@mastermp2 I literally posted this in another video how they made MJ and Ariel, two red heads, black. I didn’t know this transcends Disney!
Artemis the Amazonian, too in Wonder Woman
What would they do if the they ever adapt Hercules?
Don’t forget about Starfire, even though she’s an alien.
Also Quevenzenae Wallis (idk how to spell it) in Annie
This makes no sense. Using your own logic if this story is set on the Caribbean then Triton's kingdom was already there long before slavery brought africans to the region. So by this "she should look like a local girl" logic she then should look like... native american I guess? This isn't a correction, just a flawed excuse. I am so shocked to know that many people have never heard about Hans Christian Andersen, and it’s even more disappointing when they say it’s not set in Danish waters because IT IS. Eric castle, the clothing and features are all based on Danish culture. Also, in one of the tv series episode of the little mermaid, Ariel rescues Hans Christian Andersen, so of course it is set in Denmark. And about the casting, people here loved Tremblay for flounder, he is such a good actor and has the character’s essence. As for Ariel, people are not happy, most of the fans just wished that Disney would stay true to the history and characters.
In the true history Ariel dies. Ssssoooooooo?!
I’m not discriminative at all, but what is the actual point of changing a beloved character? I actually really like Halle Bailey, and good for her, but there’s no reason to change a character just because.
Literally the only thing “changing” about Ariel is her skin tone and possibly her hair style. Her character will be in tact. If you only like Ariel as a white girl you have a larger prejudice you’re not addressing.

James Davis like what if they were to change black panther to a white guy? Like it’s just so pointless bro
TerritorialTea tbh I understand your point. But out of the princess that Disney endorses there is only one. And she was a frog for 70% of the movie (granted she is incredible as well). I know people would say why not just adapt that movie and just make he less of of a frog. But Disney isn’t going to do that because it wouldn’t make money because ew frogs.
