Completely agree about Belle and Ariel's castings. Emma Watson looks like Belle, but didn't have her voice or mannerisms. Halle Bailey may not look like Ariel, but she has her spirit, voice, and mannerisms naturally! It would have been a miscast to not cast her. We deserve someone who will bring Ariel to life. Halle Bailey is perfect for that.

I agree, and the fact that some people are saying “a Latina can’t play a German princess!” 🤡
*She’s literally HALF GERMAN.* The name “Zegler” is German in origin, therefore, she has just as much right to play a German character as a half German, half Chinese person. 💁🏽‍♀️
At least she looks like the character - jet black hair, brown eyes, fair skin, and red lips.
I think people forget that the term “Latina” is not a race, it’s an ethnicity. You can be white and Latina, just like you can be black and Latina. 🤷🏽‍♀️

It was made pretty clear that Cinderella (2015) is a live-action version of the fairytale itself, not the animated 1950 film. Everything in the film is its own thing - the characters, the story, the visuals, everything. They made the best Cinderella film and one of the most visually stunning films in existence.
If they wanted to avoid controversy with Halle Bailey, they could have simply given not named her Ariel. Lily James was playing Cinderella the fairytale character, not the animated character. Halle was clearly playing a character who originated from an animated movie, so she basically was limited to that portrayal. The Cinderella characters had no such limits.

To summarize: when a character is swapped from white to non-white, it sAvEs LiVeS (still haven’t seen any ounce of proof for such a claim) and everybody needs to just deal with it.
When a non-white character is a teensy bit paler than the original, it’s unbridled bigotry and Disney needs to do better.
Apparently the standards here are so good, they have to be doubled, as seen between the blatant contradiction between the Jasmine versus the Snow White and Ariel rankings.

    • @TommyRoss

Oh boy. Cultural and historical context of POC in media is the main factor here. White has always been the default in Hollywood, & even when characters were written as POC, they were either portrayed by white people or they were awful stereotypes (because all the filmmakers were mostly white & didn't know how to or care to positively represent a community that they weren't a part of) or they were token side characters. POC have been desperately clinging on to any bit of positive representation they can find, & the history of the subject is objectively atrocious.
Because, yes, representation does save lives. For many reasons. Media can shape the way we see the world & see others. And if non-POC, especially those who live in mostly white areas, are only exposed to certain communities through the media they consume, then they're gonna have a warped perception of those communities because that's all they have to go on. They see POC as the side characters, the comedic relief, stereotypes, gangsters, thugs, secondary to white people, etc. etc. And even if the non-POC do personally know POC, the media they consume can still shape their view of them. There are cases of positive representation, but they are few & far between, & it's rare that one gets to be front & center in a mainstream four-quadrant blockbuster. And since Hollywood is remake/reboot dominated (that's what makes $) & most of cinema's most iconic characters of the past are white, it's even more rare for POC to portray leads unless there's color blind casting. That's a simplification of that situation.
As far as POC seeing themselves represented on screen, they're seeing themselves being valued & validated in a white dominated landscape (yes, Hollywood is more diverse nowadays, but most movies are still primarily white & that's not going to change) & that's something that can truly alter their lives if they see themselves in that positive light.
There's a lot more nuance to the situation, but I don't have time to write a novel. Bottom line: there's a horrific history of representation in cinema that needs to be made up for.

@@TommyRoss A few questions (and a final statement) to your response:
      1. If “representation saves lives” in movies/tv, what proof do you have to back up that claim?
      2. How is race-swapping a character in a remake “validation?” Is this not simply chucking leftovers at minorities rather than creating new stories? Why not make a live-action remake of the Princess and the Frog if Disney was so desperate for representation?
      3. Regarding the paragraph discussing how whites view non-whites in media: do you believe that race-swapping pre-established characters is making relations better between races?
      4. The double standard from your video still has not been addressed. Why is it ok to swap from white to non-white, but it is not ok to do the opposite?
I agree with you that more stories from around the world should be told. At the same time, two wrongs do not make a right - we should not condone an action when it is done by one group, while condemning that same action when it is done by another group. To me, that just seems like revenge, and is ultimately divisive.
I appreciate you sharing your thoughts.

    • @TommyRoss
      @TommyRoss  Рік тому +8

@@ncomnom3637 Excuse me if I’m mistaken, but it seems as if you only skimmed over my response.
      1. Come on…I know you’re smarter than this. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to understand that ANY minority group or community seeing a positive reflection of themselves (which is rare to come by) inherently makes them feel more valued and less “other”. As someone who works with kids, it is soul-crushing to hear some of them say they wish they had whiter skin, because white has always been the standard & the most valued.
Additionally, I also personally know several LGBTQ+ individuals who have taken their own lives AND have had their lives taken by others solely because they were seen as “different”. Representation of course won’t eradicate these situations, but media truly shapes how we see ourselves & others & if more types of people occupy spaces we’re not used to seeing them in, it will be more normalized & acceptance will be more prominent. Which save lives. If you really need studies/documentation that proves this, I’m sure you can find them, but I’m not doing the work for you, especially when my statement is basic logic.
      2. In what world is an iconic character like Ariel a “leftover”? That’s a major role to be filled-one that already holds so much significance in culture and is beloved by many. So to see a black woman be the one to step into that cherished role & perfectly embody that character is a beautiful thing. In a world where one’s skin color has always been a limiting, restrictive factor, it’s wonderful to see it not be a limitation when bringing a beloved character to life. Despite the shade of her skin, I could never imagine a more fitting Ariel, so not only is she the perfect match, but the fact that she IS black, & that takes nothing away from the character, incidentally sends out the message that skin color is not a limitation & people who have historically been excluded from these spaces can integrate seamlessly (seamlessly for those who don’t immediately recoil & can’t get past it seeing a POC where they didn’t expect to).
Of course there should be new characters for POC, but Hollywood currently runs on familiarity (remakes, reboots, etc.), & as I previously said, the majority of pre-existing characters in media are white. So, as all these familiar characters/stories make a comeback, there’s very little room for POC to take on major roles in big blockbuster movies, unless color-blind casting comes into play (& there still hardly is any). Also, seeing POC being able to step into spaces & roles that never seemed to be an option for them is glorious. Minorities being able to portray ESTABLISHED characters (who are already iconic, significant, & beloved) holds so much weight & shows that a character’s essence transcends their shade of skin. And if that’s too jarring or challenging for you, some self-reflection is in order.
      3. There’s only a specific type of person who would be troubled by seeing a non-white person in a traditionally white role, & that type of person may be vocal but they certainly don’t speak for everyone. Most white people do not feel “threatened” or “angered” by a non-white person playing a fictional character, even if they weren’t expecting it. This idea of races going to war over non-white actors “ruining” beloved characters just for not being white is so insane & implies that most whites feel the same way when that’s just crap being spewed in a bubble.
Given that race-bending is mostly a new concept (at least for non-white actors...it's been a thing the other way around since the beginning of cinema), it obviously is unexpected for many folks, & some inevitably will react negatively, as is the case with any time someone's perception is challenged, but ultimately, most people aren't ferocious about it. And many will also have their feelings evolve once it becomes more familiar.
The idea that whites & non-whites would grow animosity for one another over this is such an odd suggestion, especially when the people who are casting these characters & making this films & are in charge of these things…are white. Anyway, my ultra-conservative grandma who lives in a white-populated area is a Little Mermaid fan & is excited for the film…she’s not one bit phased by black Ariel. Maybe ask her about “race-relations”-she was alive in the ‘60s, which was another time when a specific group of people felt threatened by black people existing in white spaces. I just can’t wait for young white kids to see a black Ariel & grow up knowing that both they & their non-white friends can be Ariel.
      4. My entire reply addressed why it is not even close to the same thing for a white person to portray a character who was conceived as a POC. Cultural & historical context. I thought it spoke for itself, but I’ll elaborate more. Since the beginning of cinema, white people HAVE been portraying non-white characters, taking the few roles available for non-whites, & it even continues today. Recently, off the top of my head, look who played Tiger Lily in Pan (2015). Look who starred in Ghost in the Shell. Look at all the examples on the “Whitewashing in film” Wiki page (there are far more examples than for the “color-blind casting” Wiki page). The presence of non-white people in media is hideous. There’s a lot to make up for. There can’t be a double-standard when it’s not even close to an equal playing field. And most of the time, characters that were conceived as non-white…their race/culture is actually important to the story (because they likely would’ve just been white if it wasn’t important).
“Two wrongs don’t make a right”? Umm, there’s only one (1) wrong here. We have a cinematic lifetime of ghastly wrongdoings revolving around people of color (most of which went completely ignored by the people who have beef with the casting of Ariel). I don’t see how making up for those wrongdoings & being inclusive, which is still at the bare minimum stage, could be interpreted as “revenge”, especially when whites are still the ones in charge of these decisions. Even if it was revenge, it’d be deserved. If we lived in a very different world, it wouldn’t matter if a white or non-white person portrayed ANY character, & perhaps we’ll find ourselves in that position in the future, but we live in a world that has a much more complex reality.

Oh thank goodness someone else is seeing the hypocrisy and racism of this video. I thought I might disagree with you when it came to Ariel, which is totally fine, but the fact that you got into race with Jasmine and Snow White was definitely jarring. Especially since you talked about the positive and negative characteristics that actors brought to the white princesses, but for the other princesses you zeroed in on skin color. I thought you were going to bring out the tool that the Nazis used to classify the whiteness of mixed race people for their eugenics studies and show that Naomi Scott was exactly 2 degrees too white to play Jasmine.
      In reply to your answers:
      1. It seems your answer to a question asking for data driven conclusions is "I'm sure there is data out there, despite not having actually seen any data, but I won’t bother to find it because I think I'm right which means my logic is sound." Sorry but I’m going to need to see actual evidence of this because it seems like a huge leap.
      2. They were talking about how instead of creating new fairytales, drawing from other cultures where there are actual people of color, they are black-washing a character which people of all colors end up resenting because they liked the original better. It is like creators are saying we don’t want to spend the time and energy creating new POC characters, let’s just use this existing character that comes with its own fans as a money grab. And this character is then just seen as "Black Ariel". This is also taking away representation from other groups. One of my friends growing up had bright red hair and was constantly teased about it, but found comfort in Ariel when there were few redheads in media. In fact, red heads make up a smaller minority than black people. You mention this casting "shows that a character’s essence transcends their shade of skin" yet you criticize Naomi Scott for being too white, then flip the script and say Rachel Zegler is only 1/4 Latina so it is fine she is playing a character from a German folk tale because no one’s skin is actually that white (which is not actually true fyi). Do white people not get to have a white actor play a character that was a central figure in their culture and history? You said that the movie Snow White is not in any specific time or place but it obviously takes place in 16th century Germany if you look at everything from the clothing, to furniture/design in the dwarves’ house, to the 16th century manuscript in the storybook opening. I'm sure you would protest if a white actress played Jasmine, despite the fact that nothing in the plot of Aladdin relies on middle eastern culture, you could just as easily swap out white people and it would be the exact same story (princess force to marry without love- peasant finds a magical creature and wishes he were a prince, there is an evil advisor). So why is this okay for a white princess’ ethnicity to be changed?
      3. You said "The idea that whites & non-whites would grow animosity for one another over this is such an odd suggestion" is fascinating because despite the Hollywood woke agenda supposedly working toward eliminating racism, I've never noticed race more or seen more people divided by someone's skin color. I remember a time where white little girls loved Mulan and black little girls loved Cinderella and were able to see themselves in any of the princesses despite looking different. Representation isn’t just about how someone looks. Unless there is a character experiencing something related to their race (such as Colombian generational trauma in Encanto that other races may not have experienced but can still feel empathy toward), then there is no reason why representation has to be just how someone looks.
      4. I am not a hypocrite so I agree with you that white actors should not be playing non-white characters, but these cases are becoming rare- there was a ton of backlash over Tiger Lily and I don’t think this kind of thing is accepted by the majority of the population.
In an earlier reply you said "They see POC as the side characters, the comedic relief, stereotypes, gangsters, thugs, secondary to white people" and I have to disagree with you. You make it sound like there have been no POC lead films in the past half a century.
First some tv examples off the top of my head of black characters: The cast of Fresh prince of bel-air- 1990s, showed a wealthy and successful black family; The cast of The Cosby Show, 1980s another successful family with a doctor father and lawyer mother; The cast of Family Matters, 1990s; That's So Raven, 2000s- Raven was an adored character and hilarious; Proud family- again successful parents, Penny is a straight A student; There are a few more recent ones like Black-ish and Atlanta which I don't know as much about.
Some movie examples off the top of my head: Coming to America; The Haunted Mansion; Beverly Hills Cop; Men in Black + sequels; Bad Boys; Shaft; Up, Up, and Away; Jumpin' Jack Flash; Pulp Fiction; Sister Act, The Bodyguard (you could argue Whitney Houston isn't the main character but she's a lead)
Some noteworthy characters that aren't the main character but are well-written and well loved: Red from Shawshank; Al from Die Hard; Lando and Windu from Star Wars; Nick Fury from MCU; Whoopie Goldberg in Ghost (I haven't seen that movie in forever so I can't remember any of the character's names).
So is Hollywood suddenly more racist than it was? Or are people suddenly against POC in main roles? How about we stop painting over previous characters and calling it representation and create some new original roles and movies.

I have a few problems with this list. 1st: Rachel Zegler should be in the last place or second to last. Her attitude towards the original is just straight up disrespectful. And she's SUPPOSED to be white. Idc what y'all are going to say but the Disney version of the fairytale describes Snow as having 'skin as white as snow'. And what you said in the video about that you need to be white to be a Disney princess, what would you think about a non-Polynesian playing Moana? Or a non-Chinese playing Mulan? It's the exact same thing with Snow White. The fairytale SPECIFIES that she's white. Unlike The Little Mermaid where her skin color isn't specified so it's okay to swap her race. 2nd: My problem about Halle playing Ariel isn't about her race, it's about how gingers like myself are getting less and less representation in live action movies. You're absolutely right about how Halle is great in her role, but do we really need to race swap every ginger character?

My favorite live action princesses are Ariel and Jasmine. Halle is the most incredible singer Disney ever had, and like you said she exudes Ariel with everything she has. Naomi Scott as Jasmine is very likeable, charismatic, she's a good singer. Aurora and Cinderella are just okay to me... Mulan, I couldn't sit through, the actress had zero charisma. Belle was ruined by Watson's wooden performance, robot singing, hardened face and no chemistry with her lead. Producers wanted Hermione and The Beast, and that's what they got.

Yeah out of all disney princesses, Aurora was the weakest. She's only written to be a damsel in distress and fall inlove and she never did anything to move the plot. It was the three fairies who did everything.
They could have done the storu justice like Cinderella. They have her a backstory when her parents were alive, how she met her stepmother and sisters, how she met the prince beforehand and the undeniable chemistry, and they gave each character a personality despite removing the OG king's comedic moments lol

I didn't except racism to be included as a point in the ranking. But that video was hilarious to watch. Calling an actor too white for a role then going on to explain you don't have to be German to play a German character just screams a double standard in what races you deem more important. Disney does make their films for an American audience, thats why the princess and the frog has African-American main characters in 1920s New Orleans instead of its original European origin. The live action remakes main selling point is seeing your favorite cartoon directly translated into live action, so a new black Ariel makes no sense because it defeats the entire selling point of the film.
I'm not angry you ranked two actors' roles highly when their movies aren't even out yet. I'm angry because you clearly are being disrespectful to European culture. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has the titular lead wears a dress and hairstyle fit of the 1930s America, but at the same time Walt Disney referenced real German films when producing the film, utilizing some of their techniques. trying to gain a new style blending realism with legend. Creating a film not just Americans loved but Germans loved as well. You can gain a deeper audience if you respected the source material. I believe the Little Mermaid remake could have gotten to a billion if they just stuck to the selling point.

And I don’t even mean just cast a caucasian woman, but someone with a REALLY pale skin to fit the description. If she was named after a different colored or kind of skin, I think they should’ve casted accordingly too! I get trying to be inclusive but if it’s such a defining characteristic of the character that she’s named after it, it should be honored. Hey I really Iike Naomi Scott as Jasmine. I don’t care she doesn’t look so much like the cartoon. Matter of fact I think she is even prettier than the cartoon Jasmine and I loved her acting and great singing voice I couldn’t have asked for anyone better

The casting for Ariel, my Halle and the Cinderella actress are the best ones. For snow white, Rachel is decent. Her voice is angelic.

I think Jasmine is rather clearly a Middle Eastern girl even if her homeplace blends Middle Eastern and Indian influences. Her complexion is gorgeous, meaning that I consider her my favourite disney princess, and I particularly think that Naomi Scott looks nothing like her; however, she is a good actress and I enjoyed her performance. For Cinderella we already have Ever After (1998) which was very decent and entertaining. I did picture Drew Barrymore as Cinderella; not disney's, but one possible Cinderella. For Snow White, we have Mirror Mirror (2012) with Lily Collins.

Have you seen her at the red carpet or in the movie ? I mean Halle has the essence of the princess and that just FITS. Halle did an amazing job since she’s not even an actress btw. So talented.

Halle did an amazing job of Ariel and I'm a huge fan of Little Mermaid. I did not l ike the choice of her hair in dreds, but her performance and singing made this minor for me. The problems I have with Rachel as Snow white is... the character has "skin white as snow". the name of the character says it all... and beyond that, the hair style they gave Rachel as snow white is AWFUL! Not the actresses fault there but give me a break? what were they thinking there? Rachel was however, great in the Hunger Games. I actually think Jasmine, should have been given a higher rating than she got as she was amazing in the role. Emma Watson I agree, was not a good choice for Belle. Lily as Cinderella, spot on.

Mostly agreed with your ranking, but something I haven't seen even brought up in the comments is how the bigger issue with casting Naomi Scott as Jasmine is not that she's "not brown enough" because she's half-white... but the issue is how often Western media conflates Middle Eastern culture with Indian culture. You mention in the video that Agrabah is a fantasy-hybrid place of the two cultures, but that's the exact problem because that's how our two separate distinct cultures are often treated. I understand that the script was re-written to explain off the actress's lack of Middle Eastern background, but it still contributes to the narrative I described. In this context, I feel they should have picked a culture and stuck with it or pushed for a more "fish out of water" narrative for Jasmine as someone being Indian dropped into a Middle Eastern culture/environment. I'm Middle Eastern so the film just felt quite insensitive in this regard and made it hard to watch. Thanks for listening :)

I agree that Halle was the best singer, and she got the part based on talent which is FANTASTIC! I'm in full support of that. But I'm sorry no she sounds nothing like Jodi Benson. She sings in a completely different style. And if that's where they want to take the new Ariel story fine, but this constant "OMG she sounds just like Jodi" is such gaslighting bs.

      @TommyRoss  Рік тому +12

Have you seen the leaks? Halle’s sweet, gentle speaking voice & her angelic singing voice are definitely living in a similar space as Jodi’s, but of course Halle adds her own siren-y, passionate flair that brings it all to a new level.

@@idaf3028 no, she doesn't. I never said she did. I'm just tired of people insisting she does like I don't have ears. She's a wonderful singer, I'm glad she got hired based on talent I never said otherwise.

Idc what y’all say but imma make my own live action princess casting 1. Snow White as:Katie McGrath 2. Elle fanning should’ve been Cinderella or Lily James should’ve kept her role 3. Aurora as Dove Cameron 4.Ariel Either Holland Roden or Rhianna since Rhianna is a queen with red hair
5.Belle as Emmy Rossum Or H.E.R Jasmine As Freida Pinto Pocahontas as Devery Jacobs Mulan as Brenda Song Tiana as SKAI JACKSON THE QUEEN or Brandy Norwood or Teyonah Parris Rapunzel as Anna SophiaRobb Rose Leslie As Merida Audi Cravalho as Moana and since Raya is a Offical princess maybe Awkwafina

I agree with the ranking, but I don’t think it’s right to say Halle’s performance is better than the original actress. Without her that role wouldn’t be the iconic character it is today. Both actresses did phenomenal jobs in their roles. But we can’t help but compare women I guess 🤷‍♂️

    • @Amanda-kd1zr
      @Amanda-kd1zr Рік тому +4

Yeah, I hate people saying Halle is better or "eats her up" (in regards to Jodi's singing). Halle is incredible but Jodi sung it the way she did for a reason and having containment while still being emotional is really impressive too. I love both of them but people don't really compare their renditions in a nuanced way, unfortunately. Jodi was the best voice performance and Halle is the best live action imo, I feel like rather than comparing we should be happy that The Little Mermaid killed the casting for their lead twice.

Halle is better because Ariel have always been there and it cautivated the same amount of people but Halle had being non racist obviously that magic and chills. I personally always knew Ariel but never liked her. But Halle performance make me like every inch of this character I feel like I understood her more with her than with jodi

The only time I do disagree is bout show white I mean Snow White is describe as white as the snow. I’m not even talking bout origins and stuff because imo Halle is the best princess we had yet and even tho the only negative point is the not that red hair but the rest 10/10. Ofc I will watch show white and forget that one point and give a chance to her 💕

The original Disney film did not represent the Arab world in the first place. It was always Indian with some Arab influences, which is something that was taken from Disney and films in general. No work has ever shown the true Arab image, even the Arab works themselves, the majority of whose actors are minorities and foreigners.
