How Fast Can You Beat Pokemon Yellow with Just an Oddish?

- Sometimes the only way to prove to someone that they are wrong is to make a detailed video pointing out why. Oddish isn't as good as Bellsprout in any version of any Pokemon. Let's get this Yellow solo challenge over with.

🍤 Solo Run Rules: 🍤
►I can only use the title Pokemon in battle. No switching at all, HM Pokemon are required.
►No use of items in battle. Potions, TMs, etc. are allowed outside of battle.
►No use of skips/exploits. This includes the Pokedoll Marowak skip. Badge boost is unavoidable.
►The TMs for Double Team and Toxic are banned. Pokemon that learn similar moves naturally are allowed to use it but not the TM.
►I play on x3 speed and use the in-game time for the run along with resets to rank these runs.

he's not THAT weird; he's just Odd-*ish*
This comment made my day lol
Impressive work optimizing this run. You made Oddish look half decent, which is no small feat. Thanks for the great video and content, Matt!
No problem. I’d love to be at the point where there are people with better strategies but most of the runs people complain about like Starmie, they don’t have a solution. They just don’t like the outcome lol.
Squeaking out a little better of a run with double edge just shows the optimization. Acid was never looked forward to as much as this since woodstock
Yea, I utilize Double Edge a good bit. It’s powerful and accurate and can really speed things up if you plan for it. I really looked forward to acid though, more than Woodstock potentially lol.
That damaged sprite was great 😂 Design-wise I've always been more of a fan of the Bellsprout line, even though I know Oddish has a lot of fans itself. Shame the Bellsprout line didn't get a Sun Stone evo in Gen 2.
I love Vileplume a lot. I think it’s Yellow sprite is among the best ever!
Agreed on Oddish fans, as I used to be one. Still a cute little plant.
Agreed. It’s rare my opinion on a Pokémon gets changed by it’s performance in terms of me liking them but I like Vileplume nonetheless.
This video along with most others you put out makes me ponder if tm 28 really is TOMBSTONER BROTHER
It's definitely a mystery.
The cards are awesome, and they also give you a lot of flexibility to make an infographic at a later date to sort via variables -versions, time, levels etc under the main formula list if that’s something you’d want to do when you have more time! It’s probably the best tier system I’ve seen so far on run videos. I like the graphs for level curves as well!
Side note: the sodee pop (is that how you spell it??) bit at the beginning always makes me so happy. I’m from the UK, but it brings back nostalgia of school discos haha.
It’s easier to pull data up and quickly know at a glance where it stands, even if you have no reference of the other cards too.
I feel like I can just be like ‘x Pokémon is trying to beat y Pokémon today’ and just showing the card let’s you know that I hope this Pokémon will be in the 70s, etc.
Pretty exciting because this is only the first video and I think it’ll help out a lot too.
Oddish is a goofy lil guy
Just a loveable little ball!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 to me its also food.
I can’t personally say I eat a lot of radishes.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987what if g r a p e
Lol ask an actual question. Unless you had no clue what a radish is or that Oddish is clearly designed to be that.
This was a fun run but a huge uphill battle. I like the new scoring system! cant wait for the next video.
Heading back to Crystal with another Grass type…
loving the tier list work
Yea it definitely feels accurate!
this is gonna be a tough one, im struggling to think of how to get past agatha. that being said i love vileplume's lines design (one of my favorites) so im excited to see it in action. victreebell's line is definitely better with auto crit razor leaf and higher attack and speed. not to mention a better low lvl moveset. Edit: you managed this run very well!
Not as bad as you’d think. In red/blue it’s much worse but similar but overall it just took some time. The start is the real worry but a random swords dance really comes through here.
Really surprised by the low number of resets. Kudos for getting it this consistent despite the iffy movepool!
My motto is that if it’s already going to be a slog, just put in a little extra work to be consistent. To be fair, it’s not a terrible Pokémon, it just has an atrocious start. Red and blue was worse and it was so weird to see a mandatory Zubat fight derail Oddish’s entire life lol.
I think you misrepresented Raichu on these score cards. If I remember correctly, Raichu had a time of 30 mins at level 50 with -1 resets. Please update your card when you get a chance =]. BROTHER
I think the Alolan one makes up for it lol.
Best pokemon solo content on UA-cam hands down. Informative/entertaining/ simple ! Keep it up
Appreciate that, brother.
I hope he sees this lol. I remember the stream when this all went down haha
He's around sometimes. He commented on the Pidgeot blind run stream and said 'Flying is bad' and it's just like...okay? Offers absolutely nothing of value lol.
Oddish. I quite liked it and Gloom growing up. Too bad I only really played Blue (and eventually Leaf Green) and was denied the little radish. Though watching this, I can't say I missed out on much. I'll take Meowth, Persian, Vulpix and Ninetales as Blue-exclusive Pokemon over Oddish and its evolutions these days. Doesn't help I'm indifferent to Grass-types these days, too. >.>
I was definitely a Red person and liked Charizard. Luckily I had some friends to get the ones I was missing.
Oddish is better than Bellsprout because I like Oddish more than Bellsprout. More seriously-Bellsprout has a more optimized statline than Oddish, as well as some better key moves, including access to non-grass moves early on so it can hit grass resisting pokemon for at least neutral damage, even if the non-grass moves Bellsprout learns early are pretty poor
Using struggle early on for parts of Viridian Forest was pretty clever
Better route/run for oddish-Easy, just have oddish put on its mewtwo hat and have stats as ridiculous as mewtwo, and have access to psychic and it'll steamroll everything.
Very nice run, well done oddish
True that. I can’t knock the reasoning that Oddish had more planning or that you just like it’s reasoning, but the score is the score and that’s what the debate was about.
It’s funny because the person that originally brought it up commented and said ‘well Oddish is still better and yellow is harder’.
I dare anyone to play oddish solo in red and blue and report back to me that fighting a mandatory early Zubat is easier or that not having access to things like Lance Ice Beam doesn’t feel better.
We're out here spelling Muk backwards! I've tried an Oddish run in Yellow before; hats off to you for not only finishing it, but optimizing!
I finish all the runs and we’ll eventually do them all. After the Zubat redo, not much is left that’s absolute low garbage tier.
I watched the belsprout stream and since then I enjoyed a lot you used double-edge, and once again I really like it, a lot of runners write recoil moves out and I get it, it damages you but I believe it’s a great addition, specially a Pokémon with limited moves
I think it’s a blunder to ignore something that strong. A Pokémon learns earthquake? Instant addition because of 100 base power. A Pokémon doesn’t learn much but gets a 100 power move with a drawback you can work around? It sucks lol. I don’t get the mindset of that at all.
I definitely left a comment somewhere asking if you were going to do some videos that I've since found. 🤣😅 now I am embarrassed and can't find it to delete it. Love your content ! 🤗
No problem. The goal is to do them all in gen 1, then be a little more selective in other gens but I think we are around 50ish ranked at this point. I have really old videos but rules/software/playstyle has changed and this style of thumbnail are the videos most worth watching, imo.
I always liked oddish more than bellsprout growing up. But mostly because I loved red. I spent way more time in red than blue. But oddish had a rough move set.
Same. I like the randomizer and solo runs so I can experience everything.
TURNIP BOI!
Great as always. Have a Question. You always call rhe rival CUK. Does that stand for anything or have a meaning?
Yea, as in cuck because he’s blocking your progress at key points in the story and is generally a tough out in otherwise easy parts.
You could lie about the recoil calculations. "Holy beans, you guys-- can you believe that I survived with 6HP?! This wasn't even supposed to be the optimized run!"
Ha, we’ve been over it on some streams. It’s just like ‘wow I magically leveled up to a point to where I don’t level up on rival 6. How lucky and not planned at all!’
But you do have to do the recoil calcs in the moment. I have their HP listed so just dividing it by 4 let’s you know.
1:20 - also, i know its probly a simple edit (and one youve done for other recent videos) but it was cute to see the cracked open Sodie Pop float over to the lil Oddish for a sip...heh, 'a Sprite drinking a Sprite' perhaps...
Oh yea, I decided to do that a bit ago. It just makes the most sense. If everyone else is getting a sodie pop, the title character needs one to get started.
Respect to the Oddish Master out there
I doubt he exists lmao. Not even the Starmie master exists despite some outcry that it’s better than I played on stream.
I like oddish oddish is odd ish and cute
I like how you are so scientific about these runs. It is a big reason I like watching your videos.
The main thing is trying to keep the method consistent just to get a good gauge of how they stack up. The tier rankings is what keeps it interesting to me.
Perfect timing with "the weed Pokemon" being everywhere in Pokemon Go with this garden event
Ha, I recorded this back in May so just a happy coincidence.
I did a Gloom run recently. It was literally hell until acid, megadrain and swordsdance.
Only grass moves feels awful. Hell only having bubble feels awful as well. It might be good for Brock but it’s so weak for the early game.
Bellsprout might be better, sure, but Oddish is freakin’ adorable!
Yea, always has a smile on its face.
I'm sure it has been asked, but what is your favorite flavor of sodie pop?
I drink Dr. Pepper occasionally but honestly brother, I've been trying to be healthy and I drink 99% water these days.
I'm curous if Oddish can overcome Bellsprout in FireRed/LeafGreen. He has a higher SD, and access to Moonlight with Sunnyday strategies. Should really gain momentum late game... Perhaps, Sunnyday, Moonlight, Solar beam and Sludgebomb?
I don’t play the gen 3 remakes so someone else will have to tackle that one, brother. It’s possible considering it’s a whole new engine.
Haven’t watched the video yet. I know that Oddish does not have access to growth.
Pretty key difference!
He's just a boi
Did his best. Better than some others though.
I like how you always calls Gary Cuk. He is such a Super Simp.
Like the name implies, he's always at key points to stop you from the ultimate goal! Haha.
Great run! Nice to see how you worked around recoil damage
Luckily it’s not too hard to work around. Need extra potions and the ability to divide by 4 on the fly, haha.
Just doing my part to help out with the algorithm
Appreciate it!
I wonder if the Galarian or alolan lines of meowth would be better then the original in gen 1…
Just because of modern moves maybe but Persian is a really good run. Check that stream if you haven’t. It has one bad fight that holds it back from a really high tier score.
This is probably gonna be pretty brutal
It was both equally good and bad.
ODR! Oddish Dance Revolution!
I like it.
24:58 137 speed? Funny you should pick an example that hits that number, because that’s the speed of Agatha’s lead Gengar! 😉
Great work on the routing here. Double Edge is highly underrated, but the HP management sure can be a nuisance!
Thanks for the video! 🙂👍

Thanks!
The cutest little spring onion 😊
The color is off but it's a radish based Pokemon!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I know now, but I did not realize that was the case until after I read I few comments and it's also apparent in the name too I just thought spring onion was cute
I can see the resemblance but the name just does it in for me.
I expected much worse for Oddish due to low speed, lack of growth and shallow movepool, the time was expected, however I expected much higher resets, so great job Oddish not as good as Bellsprout but you still exceeded my expectations.
You know I’m always trying to get the best run. My philosophy is if it’s not going to be really fast, at least make it consistent. A score in the 50s won’t be too bad when it’s all said and done.
When you said you could have a 5 base power grass or water type move and make it past Brock, I thought it was an exaggeration, until i realized they are both special. Good video!
I understand why Bellsprout is better for solo runs but I will always prefer Oddish for my teams. I like the bulkier grass type, especially in early gens.
I love Vileplume but Oddish doesn't get the same love Bellsprout got.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 very true, I always picked Squirtle growing up and 9 times out of 10 I would have a Machop and Oddish on the team with them.
Sounds balanced!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I hope so! Those were just my favorites as a kid hahaha
Before I watch, I actually had a thought about this line a while back. Vileplume should be Grass/Dark and Bellossom should be Grass/Fairy. I was thinking about Karen and why she had one, and it made me think about the whole stone Evo situation. Just something to throw out there.
I always thought her line about using her favorites meant she used some dark, and some of her favs. I think the overall goal was to have status conditions be at the forefront since Gengar/Vilplume is there for curse/paralysis.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 That also makes sense. Personally, I wish they would start doing more themes like that rather than sticking solely with just Type.
Yea, I've thought about a rebalancing of the game but it takes a lot of time and I'm so comitted to the tier list at this point that it would just be a huge sink of time. Considering Starfield is around the corner and I like to play other games, that thought will have to wait.
absolute banger brother
Thanks! Appreciate it.
Bump alg
Tombstoner. Brother.
Appreciate that, brother.
The funny little weed
Oddish is a radish!
😊
Oddish is better than Bellsprout*
*in looks only
I think something that happens is people sort of overrate Pokemon which turn into decent Pokemon in their evolutions. Also Bellsprout is so funny looking it's hard to take it seriously even if it is generally superior.
Perfectly legit to like the looks of the Pokémon but this specific dude is always giving opinions in the scope of a solo run with my rules. I love the discussion but they were just so wrong lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Haha yeah, I get you. Like, my favourite is Sandshrew but I would never try to claim Sandshrew is actually some hidden gem powerhouse or anything.
It’s not bad! It’s actually this Fridays stream.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I'll try to make it to watch!
Vod always stays up unless I make a video out of it but a redo hardly ever gets the treatment.
Loving the content me and the wife watch your newest video while we go to sleep most nights. Also thank you for the help awhile ago you helped me get the colorized and custom starter working. :)
Awesome. If I ever get all the bugs out of my base version I've been using, I might release it as a patch file. I've been getting away from the gen 2 colors a little more because a few smaller channels have starting using it and ironically stating it helps them stand out when they just got it from me but it is what it is, haha.
Glad you enjoy the content and glad I can help!
Happy lil weed man
Radish man.
Level 65 time 3 hours 10 minutes
I think the lack of speed could be really bad vs sabrina
I think rival is a massive problem n potentially even Erika n Blaine
It's much slower than that but the speed and lack of growth really hurt it.
@GymLeaderMatt1987 i underestimated how AWFUL the early game is
I love your wierd strats it's cool unique and it Bucks the trend kinda how I think of things
This was definitely an unorthodox method to get to where you need to be but routing is always my favorite part! It’s the one thing I feel I’m at a 9/10 at.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987a few things
1. Haunter n gengar are so close ironically says alot about haunter
2. Golem tombstoned starmie wouldn't have ever seen that coming since geodude is awful n graveler is OK
3. Jynx really is underwhelming
4. You actually completed the game with a ditto
5. I had no clue oddish was this bad like you would think sleep powder n swords dance n THE LEGENDARY LICK would save it but no
Yea, Gengar is a little better than indicated here but I messed around on stream to beat Mewtwo's then time. Mewtwo will be back soon in the most immaculate run ever, but they are similar for sure. There's like certain breakpoints on how fast and how much special you got and they are close enough while using Night Shade exclusively early to be the same. I wouldn't be surprised if Gastly pulls a 2h 20 minute run at this point but that's coming in October.
Jynx has to get to level 18 for Brock. It's solid after that but it kills all momentum. Red/Blue Jynx is even worse, if you can believe it.
Oddish is tied for my favorite mon 😊.
Zapdos is the other.
Good choices! I redid Zapdos on stream not long ago. It was a solid run. Currently 4th!
“You spell Muk backwards” I’m so dead 😂
Lmao!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 your videos get me through meals and now shifts, please keep it up my man!
Doing my best!
Tombstoners!!
Yea! Yea!
So glad you remembered the sodie-pop if you had forgot it that would have been odd...ish😅
There’s always a sodie pop in our hearts.
Bad...ish. 😂🤣
Real one. Keep it up matt, your doing a good job! 👍 I'm glad you upload videos on top of a full-time job. It's too bad you couldn't do this full time
I’d need like 10-15x the views so it’s best to not think about this being a job haha. It would be cool to be able to do more videos and more intensive projects though.
what if this run was played on blue version, would that be more difficult? (example: for final battle, no Sandslash for Earthquake minic and need face that pidgeot with flying moves)
Yes. I spend a lot of time talking about the advantages of making the swap to yellow.
Love the work you put into your stuff, especially with this not being your full time thing. I was especially surprised by the introduction of the number grading system. I think it's helpful to have a consistent method of scoring Pokemon to make the runs a little more comparable.
Thanks! I agree. Hopefully I can open videos talking about similar Pokémon then at then at the end we show it and where it sits in the grand scheme to fully understand
What is your favorite pokemon based on aesthetics? I'm personally a huge fan of the Luxray line and the Ampharos line, but the classics don't do much for me
Slowpoke for sure.
Let’s be real. Acid is neutral effective against all the grass types you are going to meet until Erica’s tangela. So to say it’s super effective against grass is slightly misleading lol. What a painful reality.
Neutral is better than double resisted. Going through the game with Absorb making you wish you just played another game is the only thing I want to be real about lol.
21:30 That weepingbell put the fear of God in Matt. XD
Bad memories I thought I left in the past.
Also, Victrebel is the highest-rated R/B/Y pokemon according to Scott's Thoughts (of the currently analyzed pokemon). It's that much of a speed demon. XD
Yea, it’s not better than Mewtwo. We’ll see that in a few weeks. Mewtwo comes close to it’s time on x3 speed if you compare the runs and I don’t skip rocket hideout. Mewtwo’s optimization will be nutty but I had to do it to calibrate my rankings.
Sneak peek for you, Mewtwo on x3 speed had a real life time of 39 minutes and 13 seconds.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Holy smokes!
Yea, it also helps the cross gen runs have a clear goal. Can it beat Mewtwo was the original idea but I kind of...forgot I never really optimized it fully. I'm sure Victreebel will be alright but remember Scott is also breaking some cardinal rules. He's just doing more and more runs and being influenced by other people in the Discord. Most Pokemon will not get that treatment and I can ensure you that if you soaked in other strategies from someone else and did double or triple the runs that most Pokemon get, you will see a Parasect situation where the only reason it isn't an A rank is because I penalized it for skipping the Rocket Hideout.
But we'll talk about all that stuff one day in a video.
Its doable BUT I still prefer IT over Bellsprout But yellow is harder then the Red/Blue games.
It’s not. Yellow has an easier early game. Go play Oddish in Red and Blue and tell me with a straight face that it’s easier to fight a mandatory Zubat trainer in Mt Moon with less experience available in the early game.
I personally love the formula for ranking the Pokemon there is no debate which one is better
Yea, it's been in testing for a little bit and I'm happy with the results.
The Oddish line should have been Grass Ground cause ya know root pokemon
That would be cool but the extra problems that arise would be scary lol.
Hi! May I know how do I get a copy of this pokemon yellow? Thanks
I have a rules/setup video down below all the videos!
This run was a little odd... but not too much, just odd-ish.
Nice!
Didn't do as bad as I thought it would, right on!
It was alright. Still a sub 60 rating though. It’ll be a minute before I get to a pre-evolved adjustment though. I’d like to do Gastly again to see what numbers I should use.
@GymLeaderMatt1987 I need to watch the unlisted vid explaining that. Probably will make some time tomorrow. Always love the numbers and reasoning behind the grind.
It's short and to the point. Literally like 4 minutes long.
@GymLeaderMatt1987 this is why I like your videos so damn much.
It’s unlisted and just there so I didn’t have to bloat the main video and future videos with it. Knowing it’s the time penalty and reset penalty is enough for most but the numbers are there when you need them.
Great run now what about seaking to see if he is still king of the sea
Maybe in a few years. Seaking is not only pretty bad but just not interesting.
Oddish had a bit of a rough run for sure!
Yea, it’s absolutely brutal in red/blue. Way worse of a start.
Hey Matt , why have you started doing most your runs in yellow version? Wernt you doing most non cross-gens still in red/blue like in your OG day videos?
Out of 23 relevant videos, only 5 this year are yellow version. I was clear why I played yellow today because of the easier early game giving it the best run but I don’t think about versions and what order I’m releasing things, especially when I did a red video last week.
A whopping 78%+ of my gen 1 videos are in red version this year. If you don’t think the majority of them still are, just take a second and look at the video section of my channel.
@GymLeaderMatt1987 I'm dumb lol I had to replay the beginning to hear you talk about the yellow vs red stuff my bad bro. I still love your work so don't really matter what version you use. Keep up the awesome work and hope your Italian honeymoon was fun 😀!
Thanks! Yea I had a great time but it’s been about a month since. I just always play the game that gives the best run and a lot of weaker Pokémon just perform better in Yellow.
👍
odd onion pokemon
What does odd + radish equal?
Matt said the Alolan Marowak run was too easy so why not torture myself this week
You must have missed the Rhyhorn and Exeggcute redo streams I did in the summer. They are much worse than this one.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Rhyhorn was really that bad....worst then oddish...damn Gamefreak must hate Rhydorn lol
It’s double weak to Misty and Erika. Weak to Lorelei, in the slow leveling group, and has like 35 speed lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I'm soo sorry you had suffer through that lol
I’m playing them all. It’s my 3rd or 4th time doing that run.
Hi Matt!
Hey.
The struggle of early was real! i Saw the good placement of articuno up there, i wonder how its galarian counterpart would fare time wise there with its pyschic
I think all the Galarian birds would do well. Zapdos would have it the most rough but it's fast enough to nullify the psychic weakness but it's something I haven't really figured out what I'd like to do with it.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 take your time on that, it's pure curiosity from me!
I've been floating the idea of a 3 way versus but it's like 6x the amount of work than a normal video.
Yo been waiting for this!
It's not as bad as you'd think but it's still not great.
Oddish! Just imagine being as happy as all of its artwork and sprites.
Man, I recently tried my hands at FRLG RNG manipulation and Oddish is a key component of doing this playing Fire Red (Sweet Scent forces encounters).
Also, Oddish evolves into Vileplume and that's Erika's ace.
Oddish is an amazing little guy, but yeah you're right, Bellsprout is objectively better. Still, it's Oddish.
Yea, the numbers don't lie. I have to do all the runs at some point but the person in chat was adamant about it and it's fun to show receipts.
You got to love the little happy oddball, it's so weird to compare it with another Pkmn that seems to fill a totally different, more offensive role.
I guess it's just like Karen said; Those perceptions of good and bad Pokémon doesn't even really matter and it's about which you like.
Ha, not here. There’s a formula and a method to getting the results and ranking all the Pokémon in a solo run is the goal. Being biased towards my favorites is a no no here.
Yeah, true.
But still, as a viewer, it's great to see whatever Pokémon you like, no matter how good or bad they perform. Your presentation is entertaining either way.
Thanks! Gotta rank em all!
