The lead singer is also the bass player and also plays keyboards. There are only 3 people in the band and they put out a sound like that live as well as in the studio.
"Do all Rush songs sound like this?" No. No they don't. Every amazing song by these guys is unique. You have no idea how deep the Rush rabbit hole goes!
Most drummers come out with a big kit like..."Look what I can buy..." Neil came out with a big kit..."Look what I can PLAY..." R.I.P. Neil. You are sorely missed.
Sadly, the drummer, Neil Peart, passed away in 2020. The band had announced they would no longer continue back in 2018, but the drummer’s death was the final straw to ensure they were finished. They were amazing! So much music from 3 guys! I saw them live multiple times and they were always amazing. RIP Neil.
Odd in a way. Peart wrote the lyrics. Refers to Twain’s novel “Tom Sawyer.” Now banned in some states. Tom Sawyer used to be a classic novel. Now it’s banned in some states.
@@hollissensenig1775 Not "banned" - that's not really legal. However, some school districts don't want to have it on lists of recommended reading, or in school libraries.
The saddest part is that they decided to have one final tour after Neil’s cancer diagnosis so they could “go out” on their terms. It was more a precursor to Neil’s passing as opposed to being the final straw, which almost hurts more as a fan that was never able to see them live.
Just came across this reaction...you've just been introduced to one of the greatest bands, in history. While you are deciphering the lyrics and reveling in the music...remember, that there are only 3 band-members creating all of this wonderful 👏. Take a trip down the Rush rabbit-hole and you'll come across 40 years of incredible music. Do yourself a favor and continue with this album, Moving Pictures. It was their most successful album (commercially)...but not always considered their best album. Check them out...see what you think.
Enjoy the ride my friend. Been a fan for over 40 yrs, was just listening thru Power Windows yesterday, and I never tire of them. Great vid amigo. Peace.
Geddy Lee is one of the few musicians who can sing and play foot pedals while also playing either bass guitar or keyboards. Since this video is from a studio session it shows him doing each separately, but he did them all when performing live.
So glad you found RUSH! Check out "Spirit of The Radio", "Fly By Night" and "Closer to the Heart". One of the best and most prolific rock bands of the 80's. Enjoy the RUSH journey!
Neil did an interview where he talked about how hard this was on him; with the drums.. each beat had to be precise and strong ... the song always tested him
Any and all are pieces of art that I cherish. Tom Sawyer was the first one I heard and will always hold top spot, but you'll *never* hear me turn down Rush :)
I've followed Rush since the late 70's and back then you really had to have an ear for what they put out. 3 man band so gifted, so versatile. The greatest bands are the one's that can endure generations. One of the most talented drummer's in rock n roll, Neil Peart. Passed away in 2022 as always with the greats, dearly missed. He was the bands lead song writer. R.I.P Neil. Thank you for your gift of music to the world.
This song came out in 1981....Rush has been together since 1968. btw the piano man is the bass guitarist and also the lead singer...Geddy Lee. The Dummer is widely known as one of the top 3 drummers of all time (Neil Peart).
Rush is probably the greatest band of all time (as well as the most underrated). Geddy Lee is the lead singer and plays bass and keyboard (sometimes doing all three at the same time in concert!) Then you have Alex Lifeson on guitar, an amazing musician in his own right who is often overshadowed by the popularity of his other two bandmates, and as a result his skill on the guitar is very often overlooked and underrated in the rock community. Last but definitely not least is Neil Peart (pronounced like "ear") on drums and percussion. He was known as "The Professor" or "your favorite drummer's favorite drummer". We lost Neil back in January of 2020 after a quiet battle with brain cancer. RIP. Rush's work spans 4 decades from 1974 with the release of their first album to their final concert on August 1, 2015 in Los Angeles. Their sound has evolved over the years which makes them one of the most versatile and timeless bands ever. If you want to continue your Rush discovery experience, I highly suggest the following: Working Man (from their debut album. Listen to the studio version first, then the live version) Spirit of Radio Xanadu (from the Exit Stage Left concert) YYZ Live in Rio Neil Peart's drum solo live in Frankfurt Fly By Night La Villa Strangiato Subdivisions There are so many others, but this is a good starting point. Enjoy!
Oh HELL YEAH!! My favorite band in high school/college when the Moving Pictures album came out. I already been digging you AB, but I am most definitely jumping on your Rush Rollercoaster Ride. Spirit of Radio is another fantastic radio friendly song with great animated video, then go for a deep dive and watch these three gentlemen tear it up LIVE - YYZ in Rio, or the older masterpiece Xanadu live is incredible as well, and you get to see The Professor ringing them bells live! Rock on! 🤘🏼🎧🤟🏼
First time hearing Tom Sawyer is lifetime moment for me. I was working at an ice cream/burger joint across the street from our local rock radio station, and many nights we would personally deliver food after closing and the DJ would let us hang out in the booth with them. They received a promo copy of Moving Pictures about 2 weeks before it's release and were teasing all day that would be playing the first track from it sometime after 10PM. As was our tradition, we called them up, offered to bring some food in exchange for playing a request, which of course was the Rush song. DJ said we could be there when they all heard it for the first time also. So me and a friend were with 2 DJs and the PD the first time Tom Sawyer was aired, and the first time any of us had heard it. It's amazing to see people 40 years later blown away by the song as much as everyone in that booth was that night.
This is High Level, World Class music. Millions know this. They went to South America and minds were blown! It’s all on film. You are going to have fun with this band, Guaranteed!
You caught that Gaddy Lee was on keys as well as lead vocal, I thout you'd then catch he's also on the bass guitar. Only 3 members. We lost the drummer Neil Peart a few years back to brain cancer. His drum solo Live in Frankfurt is absolutely phenominal...
This is what happens when you put the greatest drummer of all time (who also wrote almost all their songs), a top-5 all-time rock bassist who also sings and plays the keyboards with his feet in concert, and a chronically underrated but extremely well-respected guitarist together. If you really want your mind blown, watch the video for YYZ live in Rio. It's three masters of their craft in front of an amazingly enthusiastic audience, creating music that would make you think there's eight or nine guys in the band.
As others have said, Geddy Lee sings and plays bass and keyboards and all three of them multitask like crazy. If you want to hear him singing really high with power but then also sometimes really sweet and tender, you've got to check out their breakout album from 1976, Rush 2112. Record company didn't think they were making stuff that enough people liked although they had quite the following, and this was their do-or-die effort or they were done. So they flipped the bird to the record company and took the whole first sight of that album and did this incredible epic composition and story and it showcases everything they could do at the time. I have definitely seen many people react to it even though it's long. It comes in six or seven Musical and thematic chapters of sorts some of which kind of refer back to the earlier stuff like a symphony almost, and those usually make good places to break, but you should always rewind because the transitions are just mind-blowing. But you will hear everything you need to know about why Rush was so fantastic if you check that out. And all the shorter radio playable songs on side B are fantastic as well. Something for nothing is the one that the end album with on side B and it's a total banger but with a really positive message.
Thanks Steve for that great narrative on this band . Good job and insight. Love watching these young Black Reactors getting mesmerized by the Greatness🎵 of bands like this. 😊
Geddy Lee - the lead singer - is also Rush's monster bassist and the keyboardist; Alex Lifeson is the guitarist; and the drummer is Neil Peart (RIP), very likely your favorite drummer's favorite drummer. Neil also writes most of their lyrics.
The Professors most difficult song to play according to him. He always claimed that he got better at playing it over time - lots of practice! He also said its the one song he never got tired of playing because of the challenge & he would be super thrilled when he nailed it.
According to the interviews with other musicians for their documentary, that was the challenge song for drummers. "So, you can play 'YYZ'? Now let's hear you do 'Tom Sawyer"."
Great band, retired, with one of the guys passed away (Jan 2020). Top-of-the-world musicians, all of them, and great song/lyric writers as well! Check out a song called "Limelight" next! It's from the same time period/album as Tom Sawyer. You will love it!

Now you're talking 🇨🇦 in the house and Geddy Lee and Neil BRINGS IT..Canada brings it..they did it because the record label forgot they existed, by the time they took notice 🤯
They were together right up until the drummer passed. Over 40 years check the three of them out doing this song at their induction to the rock and roll hall of fame.
RusH was composed of 3 compulsive perfectionist, and genuine good people that do not have any ego trips that have lead to the demise of many successful bands. Truly GREAT musicians that are also truly great friends.... Resulting in some of the cleanest, tightest most amazing music ever made.
Love seeing another Rush fan get created. I grew up listening to rush from my earliest days, and these three men set my standard for my love of music as a craft. Just pure talent, artistry, exploration, and creativity. I picked up drum sticks because of Neil, and he is probably responsible for more air drummers than any other drummer in the history of rock and metal.
What you're hearing is artistry, innovation, craftsmanship, commitment and sweat. Geddy Lee (vocals) is also bass and keyboard, often playing the bass with foot pedals; he juggles these live in concert, too. Alex Lifeson (guitar) is among the best to ever do it, and also plays multi-neck guitars. Neil Peart (drums) (RIP 2020) is the favorite drummer of some of the best rock drummers in the world. He also wrote most of the band's lyrics.
Apparently all of the lyrics after "2112". Neither Geddy nor Alex ever really enjoyed writing the lyrics, but Neil lived for his poetry, so they stuck him with the job (at which he excelled). (Also, Neil's tracks were the only ones from that album that really got radio play. 🙂)
I’ve gotten the opportunity to see Rush play live many times. IMO the best 3 piece band that ever played together. Their sound in a live venue is every bit as clean and powerful as a studio recording. They are actual musicians with decades of training and experience. Was always the best value for the dollar in a live show. And I’ve seen Boston play live!
Lol Mamma here welcome to the world of Rush. Our three Canadians masters. 40 + yrs of awesomeness. Yep the songs all have that special spark! Great reaction you got it right away. Cheers
Geddy Lee vocals, bass and keyboards Alex Liefson guitar Neil Peart (RIP) drums and lyrics Neil joined the band in 1974 after the original drummer left, and they stayed together for 40+ years until Neil recently passed
Stereo and Quadraphonic sound has been around since the 60s but not everyone could master it like some others. BTW, the lead singer is also the keyboardist and bass player. The drummer (considered the GOAT in rock) is the lyricist. That stayed together and toured up until a few short years ago but no longer perform or record since the passing of Neil (drummer) in 2020.
WOO HOO!You finally did my fav band.3members unfortunately the drummer "the professor "Neil Peart passed a few years ago.He wrote alot of the music. The singer Getty Lee plays the Bass guitar and keyboard. They are masters of their instruments and don't get me started on the amazing preformances. The drummer you will see why he is considered one of if not the best drummer of all time.
If you really want to see what these three legends are capable of, you should watch Xanadu, the 1981 live version. Their ability to make all this sound as just a three piece seems crazy.
No, all of their music is not this (this is probably their biggest hit IMHO), but they have a pretty darn good catalogue. They were way ahead of their time, and I still have this vinyl. Peace, Love!!
I like to sit back at the beginning when you say "All I need is one hit" and knowing that what you are about to hear will be instantly in the hall of fame haha
No auto tune, no special effects. Just raw, pure talent. Rush- every song's an experience and a journey unique unto its own. And with such an expansive library of music, you're sure to enjoy the ride. Perhaps "The Spirit of Radio" would be a good one to react to next... it's a face melt.
That's the same bloke on: vocals, bass, keyboards and bass pedals. They formed in 1968 and finally broke up almost half a century later, with arguably the greatest recorded and live legacy in rock music history. Explore their back-catalogue, it's profound. Oh, and you did pretty well guessing the year, it was '81.
The lead singer is the keyboardist and bassist. They were a 3 piece band. Neil Peart on drums and songwriter, often referred to as "the professor" and "your favorite drummer's favorite drummer", Alex Lifeson on lead guitar, and Geddy Lee on vocals, keys, and bass. Neil passed away in 2020 and fittingly the band died with him. Check out "Spirit of Radio" next and keep exposing yourself to good music, the journey has been fun to watch.
Rush's phenomenal prog rock has a very diverse sound to each song, but every one is FIRE! It's what's known as "thinking man's rock". Thanks for your reaction.
Hey man im a big Rush fan from Canada i just discovered you. These guys are my heroes. They cut albums from 1970s to their last album Clockwork Angels in 2015 i think? Their sound developed and became distinct through the eras. Geddy Lee (vocals, bass, keyboard) Alex Lifeson (guitar) and the late Neil Peart on drums The Professor, a drumming legend and the man who wrote the lyrics of pretty much all the tracks. We lost Neil after a long battle with brain cancer, the entire Rock world was devastated & we still celebrate him. Geddy & Alex still do stuff together (they played a song on the South Park 25th anniversary show with Matt Trey & Primus, crazy) & they hint they may tour again. That drummer will have enormous shoes to fill. Thanks for the video man ✌️ i wanted to say a little piece about Rush.
Yep, that song dates back over 40 years ago. They actually date back to the late 1960's. Back when rock was rock, blues was blues, disco was pretty much fading when this released and progressive rock was coming of ages. Although I still like to think of it as sophisticated rock and roll. For them anyway, it wasn't as 'prog' as many others because there was no bubble gum pop with it, just flat out theme oriented smash mouth rock with amazing precision.
Oh, their music gets much crazier. MUCH. Ha Ha! I saw them live in concert on 17 different tours over the decades! They always toured through San Antonio,TEXAS! One of the cities that was a day one stronghold! From their very beginning they came here and it was and is a Big Time, loyal, RUSH city. The band never forgot that and always said how much they loved coming here. Geddy and Neil said it numerous times. We were very fortunate to have that tight relationship with the band from early on. It’s a helluva Rock and Roll history, us and those guys. RUSH Night was always very special. That’s the best way to describe them, RUSH is Special. You are now official RUSH ARMY. I can see it a mile away! Ha Ha! 😁👍 Prepare to has your ass musically kicked. They are phenomenal! GO LOUD!!
Just found this channel, and as an old rocker, now 64, I got to see these guys in Germany back in the early 80's while stationed there...then spent over 30 years on FM radio as a DJ, spinning "classic rock" music, I highly suggest running down the rabbit hole that is RUSH, I suggest something from their "RIO" tour, there are many but your mind will be blown by Pearts kit...and all the rest...I've subscribed lets get rockin.
This is Rush. One of the best drummers, ever. They were amazing. The concerts were amazing. The ultimate trio. And yes, the lead singer played piano, guitar, etc. They were just 3 men. Neil Peart wrote most of their songs.
The lead singer is also the bass player and also plays keyboards. There are only 3 people in the band and they put out a sound like that live as well as in the studio.

You just saw one of the best drummers e er! Unfortunately he has passed on! But they were great for three guys!❤️
Rush had one of the best guitarist and drummers of all time, they were great
Now you're talking 🇨🇦 in the house and Geddy Lee and Neil BRINGS IT..Canada brings it..they did it because the record label forgot they existed, by the time they took notice 🤯
In one interview they were asked who was the best of them (which not a very fair question). Each named a different other member of the band.
I remember an interview many years ago when they were asked, "How often do you guys jam?" Geddy replied "We never jam but we rehearse every day"
@@37sarcastic LOL, Coolest nerds ever...!
Still get chills after 40 years of hearing this!
You just witnessed one of the best drummers who ever lived! RIP Neil Peart!! Rush is legendary!
Great reaction! They are awesome and I got to grow up on this wonderful music.
Me too!😎👍
I’ve gotten the opportunity to see Rush play live many times.
Cheers
There's a reason I saw Rush 18 times. I recommend the song Natural Science from the Snakes and Arrows concert.
Neil Peart on the sticks - LEGENDARY!
Geddy Lee vocals, bass and keyboards
Alex Liefson guitar
Neil Peart (RIP) drums and lyrics
Neil joined the band in 1974 after the original drummer left, and they stayed together for 40+ years until Neil recently passed
Three geniuses!!!!!!! More Rush!!!! YYZ live in Rio, Freewill, Limelight. Amazing!!!!!!!!
Awesome reaction. More Rush please.
Only 3 amazing men..that catapults millions of souls it saved my life..since I was 10 now 56...mind blowing...
Keep in mind boss RUSH is only 3 dudes
Lol he has no clue....😂
If you really want to see what these three legends are capable of, you should watch Xanadu, the 1981 live version. Their ability to make all this sound as just a three piece seems crazy.
Arguably the best drummer to ever live!! RIP Professor!!!
Welcome to the world of Rush. Unique musical experiences await you my friend! Listen on!
This was my husband's favorite band in HS in late 80s/ early 90s. He saw them in St Louis. I know things like 2112.
I saw Rush in 1981 and several other shows in the 80's....they sound just like this live! You should react to YYZ live in Rio.
Loved your fire effect on the screen at the part you thought was really hot! I absolutely loved your reaction to this one!
All that wonderful sound, from just 3 guys!
Love 'em!
Lead singer is on bass and keys, and he does it live.
"Broke up" isn't really fair; Alex was getting arthritic and Neil had brain cancer.
"The piano guy." 😭😭😭
The singer is indeed the piano dude and also just about the most universally respected bass player of all time.
Love this, always one of my favorites! Thanks for reviewing this 😊
The phenomenon that is Rush and their glorious wall of sound.
Love to see people discovering Rush.
Tom Sawyer is one of those songs that gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. Amazing talent!
The singer Geddy Lee does all of the keyboards, bass, and singing
Ha Ha! 😁👍
Prepare to has your ass musically kicked. They are phenomenal! GO LOUD!!
'How did you get that sound' ... the word is TALENT - - The shot of the empty drums at the end of this video just heart my heart
Loved this band in concert!!!!
This is Rush. One of the best drummers, ever. They were amazing. The concerts were amazing. The ultimate trio. And yes, the lead singer played piano, guitar, etc. They were just 3 men. Neil Peart wrote most of their songs.
Keep listening to Rush!, they played for decades and are one of the best ROCK bands to ever play!
Havent heard this song in a long long time! Thanks. Pure talent like so many bands back then. No auto tune.
