  • In this short 3ds max tips video I will show you why you should avoid using scale in object level mode and how to overcome this if you need to scale an object. There are at least two reasons why you should avoid scaling in object level: First it will break the measurement of polygon modeling tools. And second it will break your hierarchy animation when you create mechanical rig.

Thank you for the comment Naresh. Do you have any idea for the next 3ds max tutorial?

Maya uses nurbs shape for organic modelling. How can we achieve same in 3ds max. 3ds max nurbs are less explored or used.So could you make tutorials on them too.

There are times when NURBS became popular in media and entertainment industry. I think around the year 2000. But NURBS slowly died when polygon-subdivision came. NURBS main problem is the obligation to have all quad structure. Polygon subdivision is more flexible while having the ability to create NURBS like surfaces. That is why not many 3D DCC software continue ther NURBS tools. They simply ignore it and only there for compatibility reason. NURBS now still used heavily in manufacturing industry together with a new technology called T-Spline. The funny thing is using T-SPline will make NURBS modeling almost identical with poly-subdivision modeling. Anyway, if you want to focus on 3D for media and entertainment you should not use NURBS anymore, use poly-subdision instead. But if you're doing mostly 3D for AEC industry then learning NURBS may still be relevant.

    Hi,
Can we use 3ds max for mechanical or any technical/engineering modeling purposes? Does 3ds max can be used as the other software like Solidworks, Catia, etc. That software also shows the technical drawing of the model for manufacturing. Is all this possible in 3ds max? I hope you have understood my point. Thanks for your time
