  • The latest WRAL Doc, Crisis Next Door, shows how fentanyl has destroyed the lives of thousands of North Carolinians, what the state is doing to fight this epidemic and what more is needed to save lives.
North Carolina is in the grip of a drug overdose epidemic, with fentanyl being the primary culprit. The new WRAL Documentary, Crisis Next Door, focuses on fentanyl’s impact.
More than 4,000 people in North Carolina died from drug overdoses in 2021, the most substance abuse related deaths ever recorded in the state. According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), 77% of those deaths involved fentanyl.
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid. When manufactured by pharmaceutical companies and approved by the FDA, it can be safely used to treat patients in severe pain. The synthetic fentanyl leading to many overdose deaths is made in unregulated labs, pushed by drug cartels, and put in various drugs as a cheap way to produce extremely strong substances.
“It's in every substance out there. It's in marijuana, it's in methamphetamine, it's in cocaine,” said Dr. Carrie Brown with the NCDHHS.
Fentanyl is 50 times more potent than heroin. This means a very small amount, as little as 2 milligrams, could be a potentially lethal dose.
“We are in the deadliest moment of the deadliest drug epidemic in American history,” said North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein.
Confusion surrounding what fentanyl is and how it is killing people has led to a lack of empathy surrounding this crisis.
“You'd be hard pressed to find a family in the United States that hasn't, at some level, been impacted when you're talking about the numbers that we're talking about,” said Dr. Brown.

It's that they don't care. It's this magical idea that's ok to live the party style and not having a genuine conversation with your children. My child wanted to go to a sleep over and I said no way in hell. You are welcome to bring anyone, to order food, to do whatever you like. Oh come on let them go, he is a good kid. I straight up looked him in the eyes and said you know and I know there someone using drugs, someone is drinking someone is doing something they shouldn't do. It's fun but my job is to do my best to reach unscathed until you reach adulthood and I promise you once you are on your own, I know I can't stop but if you do then you carry it on your own. I will not play that game with you and then went down the list of a friend that had a child that overdosed, of a friend that reach their potential because they are pothead, of this and that. Their child was partying and then dropped out of school. Armageddon should have started.

Good for you Macey. I’ve been clean since 10/07/2019 I was addicted to opioids for over 10 years. I was taking up to 30 pills a day. Started with a back injury. Dr’s had no problem writing my scripts every month. Then the opioid epidemic started. My Dr’s cut me off immediately, no warning, no trying to wean me off of them and I had no clue how bad the withdrawals were going to be. So I turned to the streets for my pills. I’d work 7 days a week just so I could have money to buy pills. I went into debt because I was using the money to feed my addiction. I’d finally had enough, called a clinic and they were able to get me in. They wanted to give me methadone. You can still get high if you are on methadone. I said NO I want Suboxone. Suboxone will put you into a precipitated withdrawal if mixed with opioids. Well that was enough to scare me straight. I stayed with the suboxone and never looked back. Been clean since! I’ve had two surgeries and Dr’s wanted to give me opioids for the pain. They knew my past and were still willing to give them to me. I flat out refused! Tylenol and ibuprofen were plenty to manage my pain. I had knee surgery and most recently I almost cut two fingers off my left hand in a table saw work accident. Tylenol and ibuprofen worked to manage my pain. Keep up with your sobriety. And always refuse any opioids even if a doctor tries to give you them. Two months is fantastic! Pretty soon it will be two years! If you ever need help just ask me. I can and will help anyone who is addicted. I don’t wanna see anyone lose their life because of this garbage. 👍🏼👍🏼❤️

Any addiction stems from a feeling of perceived lack (lack of self-worth, lack of confidence, lack of love, lack of something). The bigger the feeling of not being enough the bigger the addiction. The drug fills an internal void. Unless you address the root of the addiction which is actually about mental health little can be done to stop the usage of any type of drugs.

@@mc1069 Yes beneath alot of addictions is unhealed trauma and or unmanaged mental health issues. Lack of self worth, lack of love, nurturing etc etc can all be wrapped up in those thing too. Sometimes simple partying and experimenting can contribute to heavier usage as well as pharmaceutical dependence creating addictions.

My addiction started after a running injury! I felt a void and not having a purpose! I gave back to the community by opening up a 2 hour once a week running program for single parents. Anyone could join of course. I became a paid runner at 46 to 51. My city sponsored me to represent my age group in New York and Cincinnati Marathons . I was running my fastest since high school. I ran a 8k on New Years Day in Myrtle Beach South Carolina in 2015 . I out ran all of the University South Carolina Cross Country team that morning. Placed 3rd overall! 33 degrees that morning. Injury happened that month. The applause I got may seem like nothing and it really is to get your award after every race. However, it meant a lot to me because I had to work so hard during the weeks to build up for it. Depression set in and being bipolar, didn’t help the situation. Six years 3 days clean from crack, cocaine, fentanyl, heroin, alcohol. I finally started running again on a consistent basis and working out!! My 2 sons and mom and dad will not forgive me. I completely understand. This really hurts and I do ask myself it’s easier to get high and forget! I’m staying the course and building a new life to help others and to give back. It’s not about me! Deny myself, and lift others up ! I follow the path Jesus laid down for all of us.

As sad as these stories are, there is another side. I am a 54 yr old male married with children and grandchildren I have cervical fractal arthritis which has caused a 24/7 headache that can become a migraine at any time. I also have arthritis in my spine. I have pain that is indescribable. It took 11 years before my doctor gave me oxycodone. I need them to just get a few hours of sleep or be a part of family get togethers. I use to sign worship songs now because of pain. After 9 years, I had to quit. I do not understand the addiction aspect of oxycodone, I like the little relief from pain. Restricting opiods for pain cause some sufferers to commit suicide.

I to have arthritis in my neck and both knees has cartlidge damage and few other health issues from car accident and being stupid teenager I take opioid for my pain relief, also had an addiction to herion on and off for comming close to 25 years there's not much difference between pharmaceutical drugs or street drugs an addiction is addiction I'm just so glad we don't have fentynol in my country Australia 🇦🇺 because I'm sure I'd b dead by now don't get me wrong those cartels try all the time to get that rubbish into my country but our border patrol will not let 1 gram of that crap get inn and I'm glad the pharmaceutical company and Doctor's in Australia won't prescribed it even if u got cancer they rather give you oxy or morphine tablets or morphine injection. But it's all bad, drugs where meant to help people not destroy them and those cartels and dealers need to stop putting fentynol into everything, all the older drug addict from coke meth and herion are still alive and just few died from accidentally over dosing they should test drugs first and if positive for fentynol reject it send it back to cartels with strong message no money to b made here from fentynol and same goes for Chinese pharmaceutical companies selling those ingredients to cartels once they realise no market for the rubbish they go back to old style drug making from 60 70 and 80's.. All drugs suck people are just to greedy and weed helps for arthritis just as good as opioid if it's legal where u live.. ✌️ from Australia 🇦🇺

@Darrengriffiths3197 Fortunately, I never had an addiction. My wife was an alcoholic. She has been sober for 16 years. There have been times I was out of oxys for 11 days. The only withdrawal symptom was an increase in pain. It sucks that people have an addiction. It also sucks that a father with a full-time job has his pain meds stopped. The pain was so intense that he committed suicide. Yes, more regulations but no to genuine pain suffers as collateral damage. Jesus is the only source I can point addicts to.

i'm sorry to hear of your pain, i wish you health and comfort. i hope you are doing good 4 weeks after this comment - opiods are prescribed to 'help a little bit' for sleep and comfort...usually the problem starts for everyday people when their insurance or something has a problem and their doctor no longer provides them a simple thing...the only other way to get it is on the streets. you don't realize how addicted you are until they take it away and you 'have' to find it somewhere else...usually on the streets where people put fentanyl in your drug of choice without your consent

    Just beyond heartbreaking 😢
As a recovered heroin addict, it’s literal hell on earth and nearly impossible to get off of. But fentanyl? It’s a whole other ball game. And I thank the Lord that He got me out right before fentanyl came into the picture. Parents watch out for the signs: grades dropping, things missing, pupils pin prick small, voice changes, isolating, etc. Don’t let your kids leave your sight if need be. We are losing too many 😢 But most importantly, PRAY OVER YOUR CHILDREN!!!! Lay your hands on them and pray that the blood of Jesus cover them, protect them and guide them each and every day. The devil is hard at work in these last days. Make sure your kids know the Lord. And never, NEVER give up on them. God bless every person who reads this, and may God intervene and fight for our people if it is His will. In Jesus name.
    AMEN.

If fety ends up in the cocaine is because the coke was tainted by a moron along the line when they were buffing it. If you’re doing cocaine, know who you’re getting it from and you’ll most likely be alright. They say it’s laced In the weed? Then get with the times and legalize weed .

I think a big part of the issue here is no one knew what they were getting. You never know what it’s cut with. “Dealer” is not cut and dry anymore. Addicts simply passing drugs around and just so happened to be the one that got it this time end up being treated no different than the intentional & big time dealers. It doesn’t occur to them that they could be considered a dealer nor are they capable of thinking about it when they’re hurting and need a fix. That is what is amazing about this family. I’m so glad I am the age I am - I had 15 years of partying, never would have touched an opiate, and although sometimes stuff I bought was ‘stepped on’ that just meant it wasn’t very good, not that it’d have fentanyl in it.
Funny thing is, there was never a day when I sat myself down and said ‘right, its time to stop doing drugs’ - for me it was a gradual shift in my work responsibilities, the people I associated with, the places I wanted to go and the things I wanted to do to unwind- essentially I was able to grow up, and I got there before fentanyl started being hidden in things that aren’t even supposed to be opiates.
If I was in my younger days today, this could, and probably would, be me. I feel lucky I got to have my ‘years of thunder’ when I did - it was a bit risky even then, but now…. now the odds are stacked against you.
I’d say the problem now is not drugs, it’s the illegality of drugs. You ain’t gonna stop kids partying - it’s time to legalise the lot, so at least people know what they’re doing and taking only the risks they think they’re taking.

Initially, when opioids became available early on, our government said that we had a RIGHT to be pain free, and so physicians began prescribing Vicodin, Vioxx and all other labeled painkillers at request of the patient. I know because I had extensive knee and hip pain. Then the boom came down years later and patients were shocked into withdrawal, cold turkey. People then cried out with legitimate pain vs recreational. Not good!

This is coming from an ex addict who has 7 plus years sober. I feel bad for everyone that has been affected by the drug epidemic. With that said I don’t think we should be punishing low level drug dealers to the extent that we do. And before anyone says I’m crazy let’s think about this for a second. So you’re telling me in the most powerful country in the world, all the technological advances we’ve made, massive budgets for law enforcement, etc etc that we can’t do some great investigative police work to find out where the major players are to shut them down? I just don’t believe it. I believe there is a bigger evil party at play that is flooding the streets with these drugs. No way there should be more drugs on the streets now than there was 10-20 years ago. I just don’t believe it. Just my two cents. My thoughts and prayers go out to the affected families. May God watch over you and your loved ones.
