- Vladimir Putin says the offensive Russia launched a week ago in Ukraine's Kharkiv region is not aimed at capturing the city of Kharkhiv.

Speaking during his trip to China, he insisted it's aimed at creating a buffer zone to protect the nearby Belgorod region - which Russia said was hit by Ukrainian drones overnight, along with Crimea.
Meanwhile, Ukraine's President signed two laws allowing prisoners to join the army and increasing fines for draft dodgers, in an effort to increase troop numbers.

It doesn't make sense for Russia to take Kharkov when they are winning key battles in the Donetsk oblast. They surprised the Ukranians in the north and tricked them into thinking they were going to start a major offensive on Kharkov, and this effectively stretched the already weakened Ukranian defenses towards Kharkov, leaving the forces even more defenseless in the Donetsk oblast. While Ukraine prepares for an assault on Kharkov, Russia is going to take Chasiv Yar.

Ukrainian drones have already hit 1,600 km inside Russia, which is further than the entire width of Ukraine. So, Putin would have to conquer Ukraine all the way to Lviv. Unlikely.

There is nothing to show that the offensive has failed and it most definitely was to create a buffer zone, as Kharkiv is where Ukrainians were firing into Belgorod from.

They also threw there best units into Bakhmut (to get beaten by literal ex cons) Kharkov will be defended by conscripts, its also bigger - so Ukrainian forces will be spread out. And Kharkov isnt fotified like Bakhmut was. Not saying itll be easy, but as Ukrainian lines in the south and east collapse they are going to struggle to hold anything. Also, Russian losses (which were a lot lower than Ukraines) in Bakhmut were prisoners, not front line Russian troops.

@@nikolajkapa2283 Bakhmut was a fortified command and control center for the Ukrainian military in the Donbas with a ridiculous amount of underground tunnels and mines that had to be taken, controlled, and sealed. Comparing the two is asinine.

russia and NATO both say that in the current situation russia cannot take kharkiv but its hard to tell if that is the goal. Ukraine has shocked the world with their defense but they need to fix their man power problem yesterday or its game over
I agree, the first russian assault had elements of 4 divisions and not its 2 divisions. Its not enough but enough but these coukd be just first line troops and an occupation force might be assembling.
The city is bigger than Kherson and its population is highly hostile to russians so they have to expect a brutal occupation and partisan activity

NATO knew Putin would invade in Dec 21. They were offered a simple neutrality deal for peace, which they rejected because they were determined to expand NATO even at the cost of a war in Ukraine.

As I see one third of Kharkov's population is Russian. So it is not certain that they do not want to occupy the city, which was founded on the territory of Russia.

@@KyleFisher-Hickman Thats what Ukraine are loosing and is pretty much accepted across the board. The BBC/Mediazona's figures (regarded as the most accurate) place Russias losses very low. a hundred on a bad day, way less normally - and being those outlets are heavily pro-Ukrainian they are likely way to high at that. The big numbers are from the same places that tell us Russia blew up nordstream, Russia is out of missiles, Putin is terminally ill etc.
