  • After a very difficult coolant hose blew under the intake, removal of the plenum and distributor was needed. Please be careful working on your own vehicle! Included in this video: how to remove and install intake plenum, replace failed coolant hoses, change spark plugs, and timing light procedures for distributor alignment

    Quick tip from someone who has taken the intake plenum off my VG33E many times to fix various things. Once you get everything disconnected, when you lift the plenum up, you can unbolt that metal coolant line assembly from the plenum with three 10mm bolts, then the plenum will lift right off without ever messing with those two rear coolant hoses. This way, you can take the plenum off to do other things, like access the valve cover or work on the fuel injectors, without needing to replace those coolant hoses every time. It also makes short work of getting that plenum assembly off. Less than an hour when you get good at it.

      The his would have saved me a ton of time! In hindsight, I’m glad I replaced all the hoses and all, but if I need access in the future, I will do the easy way.

      @ijfim it took me about two times of taking the plenum off to realize the coolant lines could come off separately, lol. You live and learn! Great video. I've got a '97 QX4 and know this engine all too well.

    I just took that hose off. I was able to get the clamps off enough to cut the hose with a razor knife. Then I discovered the lower connection was rotted off so bad I needed a new main thermostat housing. It has two 10mm bolts behind it that I reached by using 2 extensions fished back to the fire wall and ratcheting by lying across the engine on a.old cushion. I did not take the intake off. But I did the timing belt and water pump which ment removing the radiator and shroud and fan and covers🤪. Luckily I replaced the rear hoses when my transmission was out for a new clutch. Also my Frontier is lifted probably 16 inches including a 3" body lift and a solid axle swap on lifted leaf springs. So I was on a ladder for everything.

    i have been working on mines for about a week (evenings for a few hours) recording video washing parts. i saw a trick to keeping that gasket in place by spraying adhesive spray on it, that way it doesn't move when trying to line up the upper plenum

    There is a 10mm bolt on top of the plenum that you loosen to bleed the coolant system, much faster way to bleed it.

    Excellent video, now wait until you have to remove the lower intake 😂. I have a leak on the main heater tube that runs under the lower intake from the thermostat housing. I just top off the coolant about once a month 😂 and keep on driving it.

    good idea putting bolts back in the same holes, but you should use a marker or tape so that the grounds or items go back in the same spots

    Good informative video and well produced. Thanks for taking the time! Getting ready to do my 04 frontier for fuel pressure regulator and driver side valve cover gasket. One question if I may.... I fully expect to have to cut the two coolant hoses by the firewall like you did. Can you tell me what size hose you bought for those? I'm guessing this is also the same diameter hose you used for the lines under the plenum? I do understand I'll probably have to go with worm clamps for same reason you encountered. I spent a couple of hours watching all the videos of R&R of the intake manifold on the VG33e looking for tips, tricks and taking tidbits of info and lessons learned from others who have been through it. Not looking forward to this, seems there is no silver bullet. You gotta do what you gotta do. Thanks again for taking the time to make this concise video it will be be big help.

      If I remember correctly, I brought a piece of the old, cut hose to Autozone with me to size it up. They let me go to the back and match it up. If you are going with worm clamps, the outside diameter isn’t important, but the inner diameter is. Also, I would replace the radiator hose that blew on my truck that forced the plenum removal in the first place. It is very hard to see and replace, but impossible to do without removing the plenum. It is the hose connected to the top of the thermostat. The hose can be found at rockauto.com Thanks for the feedback on the video and good luck.

      VERY MUCH appreciated and thanks for the tip on the that thermostat hose. Fortunately it's not a daily driver, so I can be careful and take my time. Hoping I can pull the whole thing off in two days. Time will tell.........................

    Thnx for sharing!... PITA indeed. Am in the process of changing the driver side valve cover gasket & this video is a good reference. As you'd mentioned the two coolant hoses @ bottom of intake manifold (16.14 mark of yur vid), the funky S-shape & straight short hoses -- they appear to be same size? you recall where you get them? Am trying to gather for stuff needed for this job especially hoses. Will be changing them for sure once I have it open. Thnx again...

    • @ijfim
      @ijfim  8 місяців тому +1

      They let me in the back at autozone, so I brought the pieces with me. I ended up using worm clamps since the Nissan OEM hoses were slightly skinnier. I went back over and over. Over a course of about a month, I worked on it a little every day. My back couldn’t handle more than that. Anyhow, glad the video helped, and sorry I don’t recall the hoses in the rear.

      Thnx for the quick resp! So u became one popular dude at yur local auto parts store no doubt? With using retrofit hoses, U experienced any coolant leaks? Btw, for valve cover gasket did u use felpro or other brand? For the grommets, did u installed metal or rubber side up? Any of your videos show the reinstallation? 😊

    • @ijfim
      @ijfim  8 місяців тому +1

      I experienced 1 leak after the install at the idle air control valve. Be sure to align your worm clamps so you have access after install! I used FelPro I believe (AutoZone), and installed grommets rubber side down. The washers smash the rubber symmetrically against the valve cover vs the screws imbedding theirselves in the rubber. I don’t think I have any footage of the install since it was such a pain. I know it could have helped more people, but I was ready to just button it all up.

    29:28 You must buy OEM hoses to be able to use the OE clamps. Those OE clamps are CRITICAL. do NOT replace them with worm gear clamps!!

    • @ijfim
      @ijfim  11 днів тому

      Not really able to do that. I listed the main hose in the description. I asked my AutoZone if I could go look at the hose selection in the back several days, and that was a big help.

    Did you buy a gasket kit to replace all the gaskets during this process?? Or did you just buy gaskets separately like for the plenum

    • @ijfim

      I think I bought only the plenum gasket because I wasn’t taking the entire intake off.

      @@ijfim i have to replace the knock sensor, so i have to remove the lower intake to get to the sensor. I have it relocated at the moment, but want to put it back to factory. Some smog places here in California wont smog it, if it sensor is relocated. I found a place that did, but if sell the truck, i don’t want someone else to have issues. It doesn’t pass the visual inspection. Mechanically it runs great and doesn’t throw codes. Since i am there, i want to replace the valve cover gaskets that leak alittle
