    About this video: NO MORE HIVE BEETLES | Eliminate Hive Beetles With the Beetle VAC | Building the BS-5K
    In today's video we will be building the Beetle Sucker 5000 or the BS-5K Beetle Vac for short. This is an easy step by step build. When we are finished we will be helping out a fellow beekeeper Bruce from @brucesbees who has a serious hive beetle infestation in the middle of December. Hopefully the Beetle vac will solve his problem and help to aleviate the beetle pressure in his hives. If you would like to check out his channel here is the llink:
    / @brucesbees
    If you want to build the Beetle Sucker 5000 here are the things you will need:
    Saker Mini-vac: a.co/d/1WLCgdd
    Gorilla tape: a.co/d/1WLCgdd
    Electrical tape: a.co/d/9I4diU0
    Optional:
    Rust-oleum plasti-dip: a.co/d/iiBaH8V
    Foil tape: a.co/d/fHEg0aU
    About this Channel:
    I hope you enjoy beekeeping and this video. If you are interested in becoming a beekeeper or experience backyard beekeeping for yourself have a look at some of the videos on this beekeeping channel as well as videos from beekeeping creators I have listed below.
    Although this beekeeping channel is primarily about beekeeping I am also a quasi pepper who believes in becoming self-sufficient. With that in mind, I have started a garden, planted fruit trees, replaced the hedges in front of my house with blueberry bushes, and have recently built a chicken coop. In short, I will share a lot more than beekeeping on this channel.
    A little about me:
    I am a person who believes you are never to old to learn something. Be it beekeeping, farming, raising chickens, painting, filming and editing video, making wine, beer, bread, cheese, and other fermentation consumables, play guitar etc... If I see something I want to try I start it immediately. If there is one thing I could choose to pass along to my children this would be it. Never be afraid to try. My wife famously told me once that if you are not willing to be bad at something, you will never be good at it. That means I am bad at quite a few things.
    I hope you find my beekeeping videos fun and entertaining as well as get something out of them. I hope I inspire someone to get out and try something new. If you do enjoy my videos, please take a moment to spread the word about this channel and help it, and myself, grow. Have a great day and BEE Happy!

    Channel Key words:

    A bit about my channel:
    This channel is primarily about beekeeping or more specifically beekeeping 101 because I am just a beginning beekeeper and I figured the best way to learn beekeeping and to be a beekeeper was to buy a flow hive, sometimes spelled flowhive or a flow hive 2 which is sometimes known as a flowhive 2 and begin building by backyard apiary so I would have a place to keep bees. Now, backyard beekeeping is not the only thing I do. I consider myself to be urban farming as I also try to grow a sustainable and edible landscape. Backyard farming for me also includes keeping chicken and building other things in my shop that will help all of the birds, bees, insects, and other natural pollinators. I learn how to feed bees and chickens while showing you my day-to-day activities in my apiary, sometimes known as a bee yard. Some people consider me a prepper and yes there is a little truth to that. I do consider this a form of prepping and becoming self sufficient. Thank you for spending time with me learning about tap hives, flow hives, honeybees, and chickens.

      You may have to widen the hole on the end depending on the size of your beetles :-). I hope this reduces the beetle pressure in your hives so the girls can focus on the queen and the brood. I know it seems gimmicky but it will completely clean a hive in just a few minutes. I hope it works well for you and I'll check your channel for updates :-). Take care.

    That sure was nice of you to help Bruce out! I may have to get one of these considering I had an issue during spring and summer. Fortunately, although I’m only a couple miles away from Bruce’s problem yard, I haven’t had the beetle problem in the winter.
    I sure hope he gets the beetle population down before spring.

      I had help. I have been in a beetle battle myself for several years and when I saw his winter infestation video I had to get a BS-5K off to him as quickly as possible. Luckily, it was on my video build list and I was planning to build one anyway. I know it will make his bees happy :-)

    Thank you for this. I ordered a vacuum with your link. I didn’t cut my vacuum. Instead I cut the top off a water bottle and used duct tape to seal it onto my vacuum. I put pieces inside the opening of the bottle connecting to the inside of the oval shape on the vacuum, building a sort of tube out of duct tape to direct beetles straight into the vacuum chamber. The opening of the water bottle fits the narrow attachment close enough. More duct tape keeps it in place. This only took scissors and about 5 minutes to accomplish. It works great!!! It was such a satisfying feeling after opening a hive with about a hundred beetles on the lid, to be able to quickly capture them. A few bees went in too, but I was able to release them unharmed. Then I put the removable vacuum chamber into the freezer to easily kill all the beetles.

    • @BugFarmerBees
      @BugFarmerBees  4 місяці тому

      Awesome. I never thought about freezing the beetles while in the chamber. I think I will do that from now on. Heck with drowning them, I'll just freeze them :-). Thanks for the tip.

    Outstanding build! I was amazed at the original video where you showed the initial use of the BS-5k! Added you to my channels featured channels and specifically added this video to my Tips, Tricks and Hacks playlist! The mission of my channel is to make beekeeping easier and more accessible to all beekeepers especially those with disabilities or limitations. This device alone reduces the stress of one of the major issues in hives today, so for this I thank you!

    • @BugFarmerBees
      @BugFarmerBees  6 місяців тому +1

      I use them because the act as the bottom boards for my bee barns and I am too lazy to build and attach new mini landing boards. I also use the reducers I made to close off the entrance when needed. As for an anti-beetle measure, the guardians do not work in my opinion.
