Small Hive Beetles were found here in the United States in 1996 and have spread around most of the United States. They insects are scavengers and feed on honey and pollen inside the hives of beekeepers. The female small hive beetles lays groups of eggs in crack and crevices inside a beehive. The eggs take about 3 days to hatch. These insects also pupate in the ground just in front of a beehive colony. Their pupation time is 3 to 4 weeks. The life cycle of the small hive beetle inside the hive is about 4 to 5 generations.
The larva burrows, though the honeycomb and as it travels excretes waste that causes fermentation of the honey. This causes a "glistening effect" over the honey surface and also cause a "foaming" to honey. At this point the honey is no good for human consumpton.
Of left unchecked the small hive beetle will multiply to the point where the honeybees will abscond of leave the hive entirely.

How To Keep Small Hive Beetles Out of Your Hive:
1. Make sure to keep your hive entrance reduced to the smallest entrance possible.
2. Spread course rock salt around the peremeter of your hive to kill larve in the ground.
3. First and formost, KEEP YOUR HIVE STONG. Weak hives attract hive beetles and wax moths.

late to the party, good information, i think the beetle is why i lost 2 hives last year, but we have moved the hives into the garden where they will get full sun all day. glad to see this information from a local source. the great state of SC!
Really successful channels don't waste viewers time. Everything before 3.20 was unnecessary, but at least you didn't talk about the weather which was a small mercy. If you pivot to an "all killer, no filler" format your channel will blossom! The best channels avoid talking at all. The best sweet cherry pruning video of all time is by an Italian. You will find it easily as it has a hundred times the views of typical North american efforts and would be a great pattern to follow.
Hello, we here in NY are wondering when SHBs stop showing up? Do they disappear in cooler weather? We are now in our 60s and 70s
MaxForce roach gel bait works.I have a few vids on it.
I use diatomaceous earth in my beetle blasters, it works great. The beetles go in and die, the beetles dry up, so there no smell or nasty oils inside the hive.
Canadian here I am working towards 30 hives currently at 3 now started this spring
Found you on the internet! Now on youtube, great! I bought five of your 5frame deeps to make swarm traps with. Hope I win, then I can take the swarm I catch and put it in a brand new hive!
The video was so helpful. Thank you
Where does that board go in the hive? Is that an inner cover?
Thanks for the information. We had a bad infestation and to point if our wood within hive having larvae embedded. Our bees swarmed. Question. Can we sand down the inside of hive and reuse? Once have a lot of damage. Can the hives be reused? Is there a special way to decontamination to ensure will be safe to reuse?
plumbers torch?
The screen bottom boards that you sell allow small hive Beatles to go in and out of the hive.
Sorry but the beetle blockers don't work, I got some of those & my bees couldn't get back in the hive through those things. I wasted my money on them. My wife & I set out in my bee yard & watched the bees come in & out with pollen still on their legs. I pulled mine off & junked the aluminum.
The beetle blaster is good & so is the beetle jail works great.
I use the Diatomaceous dirt in both, it's clean & can be reused.
@Mara A They did not work for me in fact they caused more problems for my bees, my girls couldn't get back into the hives. I took those Bettle bottoms to the salvage yard & junked them.
Great video!!! Perhaps in the future a video of wax moth traps too? I know there are some homemade type traps, that people have put in their apiary, but do not know how effective they are...Thanks for this video...:-)
@Mara A
I have a bug light that does NOT attract moth, but will attract the bees at knight and kill them.
Thank you for all the information

Hello, I do not have any hives but we had a hive that was built in a big oak tree in a huge hole in the tree in our yard we where happy to see that because the little honey bee has almost disappeared in our area but a few days ago I noticed a bee with a little bug on it in our bird bath but didn’t know it was anything to worry about until we looked at the hive the next day and the bees where gone and couldn’t see what happen to the hive but now I think that bug was a hive beetle. Like I said I had no idea because I had never heard of such a beetle because I do not have hives. My question if anyone can help please let me know is there some way to help kill these Beatles without harming any other wild life? Thanks
Inkseepons T. If you saw a bug on the honeybee it was probably a varroa mite. That’s probably what killed the hive. They attack theirselves to the bees abdomen and suck their hemolymph (bee blood) and it kills the bee. There are thousands in a hive and needs to be treated ASAP when you start seeing them on foraging bees. The hive beetle is almost the size of a ladybug and is solid black these will be in the hive comb its self and slimes the hive and destroys the honey. They have been know to eat eggs and day old larvae.
Lookout Mountain Honey Bees hello, thanks for the reply. The bees where up high in a big oak tree can’t see the comb with the binoculars but there is still a couple of bees flying around in it sometimes it’s just very strange.
Thank you that was informative
I use diatomaceous earth !
So who was the lucky winner
Good info. I would suggest you work on eliminating your nervous use of the word "actually". It gets to be distracting.
I probably would have subscribed if you didn't spend so much time begging for it and more time on the point of the video!
I suggest you move your camera closer to you. You want to show the viewer what you are talking about and you are too far away. No details visible. You don't need to show your viewers your whole shop.
