It's four years after this video was posted, but I just enrolled in EMT class. We've got through different paths, but we have two things in common... Interest in EMS and brain surgery. My surgery was to remove scar tissue from my left temporal lobe caused during birth that caused Epilepsy. After recovering from surgery, I went to college and became a pharmacy technician. Due to going from college to being a caregiver for my grandmother, by the time I tried getting a job, employers decided that I had been out of college too long to be qualified. After a few years of volunteering in a hospital, I looked at EMT. At first I couldn't afford it, and then I couldn't afford it and covid canceled classes. Then I was recruited by FEMA when the first covid vaccines became widely available to travel the country to work in vaccination clinics. I did that for about 9 months and made enough money to take the class. And that brings me to now. I hope to do some disaster traveling after I finish in addition to regular work.

Having been an Australian paramedic for coming on 21 years, I reckon you've nailed the pros and cons.
Here are mine (in no particular order)
Rarely boring, especially when you do 8-10 jobs in a 12 hour shift. I've abseiled from a chopper, gone to places most aren't allowed to go, seen things most never see. It gives you a different look on life. You see people at their best and worst.
    It's a career, it's a lifestyle. Certainly no "just a job".
Rosters: Here we do 4 x 12 hour shifts made up of day/afternoon and nights. We get 3 clear days off, plus 0700 onwards on your last night shift. We make about $100k/year.
Very dynamic career; To be a paramedic here (we don't have EMT level), you have to have a university degree in paramedicine. There are always new drugs/procedures/equipment being introduced.
Comradery: I couldn't ask for a better group of people to work with.
Everything you need (safety equipment, uniforms, PPE etc.) is supplied.
You're doing something useful. You're out just about all day with your partner. No sitting in an office with the boss breathing down your neck.
Cons: Not family friendly shifts. Doing shift work is more detrimental to your health than 9-5 jobs. I think I've worked more Christmas days than had off.
Dangerous: No amount of safety training removes you completely from danger. Drug affected violent patients don't act rationally. I've broken my ankle twice kicking in doors, and hurt my back from heavy lifting more times than I care to remember. PTSD is real and can creep up on you.
Stress??? A lot of people say "ooh, I'd hate to do your job" with trauma jobs in the back of their mind. Truth be told, injuries and death doesn't phase me. Seeing innocent people hurt from somebody's stupid actions does make me mad. Beats working within 4 walls all day, or in a boring predictable job. It's not for everybody, some people like safe, mundane jobs.
    Best wishes from Australia.

Nice answer. But i guess australia has a pretty high standard, so its probs hard to compare it to the us or a lot other countries.
I work i germany as an emt and i d say our standard is also pretty high. But i dont think any paramedic will earn up to a 100k ausd which is like 65k euros.

Agree with this, although in New South Wales we still have the equivalent of EMT (aka. Paramedic intern or Level 2). They can send us out solo or with another Level 2, but they do their best to pair us with a Qualified Paramedic.

Nice read in parts of Australia we have AO level, also known as ambulance officer, how that's compares state to state I have no idea. The skill set is slightly higher than emt....essentially AOs get to do more and give more as compared to NYC emt (according to the person who went there to check out how there systems and crews work).

It doesn't really matter your size except when lifting or moving patients...as long as you train and improve your upper body strength and you large muscles like your quads and butt muscles you are going to be ok. The only issues might be in the difference in your size and your partner's size. You would have to come up with some sort of plan before you move any patients and this is generally an easy fix. Get strong. NOBODY IS GOING TO LIFT FOR YOU. They might help but do not expect it. As for sizes I have worked with many people of lots of different sizes. Some of the best and most capable medics I have worked with were under 5'4" (which is how tall I am) and that includes guys too. It is all in how you prepare and train yourself to do the job both physically and mentally. It is not a job for the faint of heart...it is dead (no pun intended) hard work! Remember as an EMT you are the base for what the others with higher training medics build on. Don't let anyone short change you. Remember everybody has to start somewhere and if you utililze this time to learn, utilize those Code 1 and Code 2 transports to learn about medicine, you will go far. It's up to you. I am an EMS Instructor Paramedic and I have been in the business for over 35 years & have been a critical care medic, flight medic, mine medic, industrial medic and an ER medic.....all private.. It is what you make it, it's what you put into it......that's what you get out of it. If you come into this job with rose colored glasses...remember...glass breaks easily......and....I started out as an EMT...) :-)

Most people either leave from 3months-1year in or they stay in it for a while. It's hard becuase we don't get paid much for the amount of training we have had to do plus continuing eds. Greatest job where you develop a sick sense of humor and really see things you'd never thought you see. Mind your back and your body if you get in this profession. It's hard when you're in the moment lifting a pt to think about lifting posture and body mechanics but try to keep it in mind. Always listen to the medics and the old EMT's. Volunteer in 911 and support your local town/city. Learn about the truck , your equipment. Most of all, Have fun!

This was overall a good video, but I wish more people talked about the mental health aspects of this field. That’s a very personal issue for me as I’ve lost three friends who were EMT/FFs (two to suicide, one to homicide). I know that this problem has many roots, but I feel that we should be addressing it more than we do. Stay safe out there!

A nurses knowledge is a mile deep, while EMT’s is a mile wide.. My professor said this, and it stuck out. The pay struggle is because we are still under the DOT, so we can only charge insurance companies a ‘loading fee’ and ‘mileage’ if we run an EKG we can’t charge separate for it.

I'm an active EMT, and I'm in paramedic school as well. There are many dull moments. Most patients are not critical, and sometimes you have have to wait an hour for a call. And it took me only 4 months to get my EMT, so I definitely didn't expect to get paid a lot. If you aren't planning on doing a lot of extra schooling to get your paramedic, it just isn't worth it. When most people think they want to be an EMT, they usually actually want to be a paramedic. The truth is, EMT's can't do a whole lot on an emergency call. Most of it is ALS which is the paramedic's job.

Ems is a chill job. Been and advanced for 5 years and a was a basic for 4. Started at 19 working on the box and transitioned into emergency room for the past 6 years. Have also worked urgent care clinics and dialysis as a tech. Sooo many options for my ems peeps. Just gotta look around. Just like any other job it comes with bullshit and a low salary but don’t regret doing it.

Here in my state, when I did my 24 ER clinical hours I found out all the triage personnel is Paramedics, so around here alot do go to the hospital, but they stay in field too. Another thing around here I have yet to meet a place that won't hold your food for you on the off chance you will find a moment to be able to return, if you get a call and have to leave. I think they wait 6-8 hours. Cold but its food. You can call and say your on an ambo too and they will make it as quick as they can and hold it for as long as needed. However I did feel like there was plenty of dull moments. I live in a decent sized city, but nothing like New York or Chicago. I worked Cinco De Mayo for my second set of clinicals and only had 5 calls in 12 hours.
I work for a volunteer service in a rural community close by, I sleep most of my shift there XD

EMT is perfect for pre-nursing experience especially if you work on an ALS truck with a medic. There usually isn't any prerequisites or co-requisites to the program. For me i took my program for 3.5 months.

Several of the people I went through the emt coarse with went to nursing it seemed to be a good Segway into the program. I stayed the first responder route and got into the fire service as well which is another great option that many EMTs decide to do male and female. Whatever you decide I’ll put it bluntly if you get into any type of emergency response or emergency medicine get ready to see some shit. Good luck. Coarse takes one semester with clinicals. No pre requirements

There are a lot of EMTs that transition into the Emergency Room. The pro in doing this is that you will either double or triple your pay. The con is you most likely will miss the outdoors while you work. You need to decide which is more important to you. My background is 3 yrs ambulance, 4 yrs fire dept and 19 years in emergency room

    • @carlosdiaz5400

I’ve worked in a lot a ERs and they basically the same. As an ER Tech (EMT) you will assist in patient care. This will include taking vital signs, hooking patient up to cardiac monitor. Doing EKGs, applying splints (fiberglass or cast material), cleaning wounds, assist will sutures, lumbar pictures, central lines,etc.. You will also help with CPR on cardiac arrest patients. Sometimes we draw blood (only if you are phlebotomy licensed) from patients. There also restocking the ER with supplies. But that basically covers the ER portion of a ER Tech (EMT) duties.

This guy I work with, who was working in EMS for about 13 years, told me that the Basic EMTs are the grunts of EMS. Basically, most of them work for a private ambulance company, transporting patients from their homes to the hospital, nursing homes to the hospital, etc; Then, even if they are hired in with 911 providers, the basics are the ones driving the ambulance and then cleaning out the back afterwards. How true is this for a Basic level EMT? This is all if you are not a Firefighter.

I plan on, or think about doing EMT more than CNA, and going to college to get a better high paying degree but I don’t know if EMT would be good for me if I’m studying and working as you said “12-24 hour shifts” ? I just need help on deciding ..

Natalee Leon you should volunteer at your local fire department. They’ll put you through the required training for free and it’s a great way to decide if this is how you want to spend your life. Obviously it’s not paid but you get to answer calls and act as a real emt alongside the other real emts who work there.

Depends who you are...this field schedule is crazy at times you might only work your hours....or a 24 hour shift....so if you can handle a full time college schedule and a non consistent work schedule...lmao it would be perfect.
