Thank you so much for this great find! I'm a MAJOR Powell fan (seen every film that's available) and "My Man Godfrey" is in my Top 10 list. Have to differ with you on one thing. In 1936, Powell's career was not in decline. In 1934 he'd done the first Thin Man which was a huge success, followed by the second TM in '36, along with "Libeled Lady" (with Harlow) and "The Great Ziegfeld"..he was big box office, so much so that Universal came to MGM to get him on a loan out for "Godfrey". It's true that Lombard had approval and wanted her ex for the film. Harlow -- I've been in the home she was living in at the time of her death. Thanks again for keeping the flames of classic Hollywood burning bright!

One of my favorite stories about William Powell is how he strongly suggested to the director that he cast Carole Lombard in 'My Man Godfrey'.
I just watched 'How to Marry a Millionaire' last night...Mr. Powell was STILL a damn good looking man in '53!

That was good and fun to see this! I was just reading a lot about William Powell's life and there doesn't seem to be any great biographies to read on him. I thought he seemed to have a nice long life with his with wife in Palm Springs in his long retirement. The happiness in those photos on-line are a real upper. He had gone thru the mill at some point with Harlow's death and his illness. But happy ending after all. Happy marriage with Diana Lewis.

Jordan, loved this video! I loved the walk through the pathway to the street above, so peaceful. The house is very nice & has a great history with them living there. I'm glad you where able to tell the couple living there who really lived in the house. Unfortunately not to many today know the name of William Powell.

Hi Jordan..I'm from the UK and similar to you, discovered William Powell about 10yrs ago in the Thin Man series..then I went and got hold of any films of his I could, including My man Godfrey..he is the epitome of suave with a large dose of self effacing humour..rather like David Niven..anyhow really enjoy your travels as you show the 30s and 40s Hollywood locations and to a Brit like me it seems like another world..keep making them along with your little dog..hes great!

I am a huge fan of William Powell and Carole Lombard. You made a comment that Lombard got Powell a job in My Man Godfrey to help him work as his career was in a slump. In 1936, Powell was in After the Thin Man as well as The Great Ziegfeld. He was very popular in the 1930's and never lacked work.

Just wanted to offer a correction: William Powell requested Carole Lombard for "My Man Godfrey" -- not vice versa -- per multiple biographers of both stars. Rather than being on the decline, Powell's career was thriving at the time, given "The Thin Man" (1934); "The Great Ziegfeld" (Best Picture of 1936, and the same year as Godfrey); and in-between, "Reckless," which paired him with Jean Harlow.
The other movie Powell and Lombard made together, prior to marriage, was "Man of the World." He was not in "No Man of Her Own"; that was Clark Gable and Lombard.
Thanks for this video. It was a real treat to see Powell's old home, and the interior photos!

Just watched this vlog for the 3rd time! Love William Powell’s movies. I haven’t seen My Man Godfrey so I put a request in just now to check it out from my local library. I have seen the Thin Man movies that he did with Myrna Loy. I didn’t realize until just now that the two did 14 movies in all and that he and Carol did 3 together! Have you ever done a vlog about the Palm Springs Walk of Fame? According to Wikipedia, William Powell has one there. Instead of Stars, Palm Springs has their plaques in the shape of palms. Great vlog Jordan!

Richard Lovell was a long time resident of Whitley Heights. The garages on either side of the park he donated are attached to houses without parking. Despite the best efforts of The Whiyley Heights Civic Association, which cleans it and provides dog poo bags, the Dick's generosity has become a convenient place for our neighbors to leave dog waste.

Couldn’t agree more, I came across “my man Godfrey” by accident, watched it and immediately fell in love with Carole Lombard. Whenever I want a lift I watch it again, Carole was superb in it and so was William Powell, she was 28 when it was released and playing a slightly scatty but kind teenager. I’ve gone on to watch many of Carole’s films and some are very good but none better than my man Godfrey.

"No Man Of Her Own" (1932) was actually not made with William Powell - it starred Clark Gable with Carole Lombard, but they did not start dating until a few years later. She did make one other movie with William Powell and it was called "Man Of The World" (1932).

Hi, Jordan!I share your passion for William Powell. You do have some things out of order. William Powell's comeback occurred with "The Thin Man" in 1934. By 1936, he was one of the most popular film stars there were. Carole Lombard became a star the year before with "Hands Across The Table" (1935), with Fred MacMurray. "My Man Godfrey" made her a major star and she was nominated for her only Oscar for Best Actress. You were right about the reasons that they divorced but they remained close friends. Lombard even nursed Powell when he came down with rectal cancer in 1938-1939. He is buried next to Carole Lombard and Clark Gable at Forest Lawn, Glendale. I also agree that "My Man Godfrey" is my all-time favorite film.Keep up the good work!

Love ya Daze but nope, "No Man of her Own" was the ONLY film Carole ever made with Clark Gable. She and William Powell met while working together on 1931 films, Man of the World and Ladies' Man. In June of that year they were married.
It's reported that he gave Lombard an 80 carat star sapphire ring (WOW). In 1936 Powell suggested Lombard for the role of Irene Bullock in the screwball comedy, My Man Godfrey even though they had been divorced in 1933 but William Powell, who was playing the eponymous Godfrey, insisted on her being cast as the female lead; despite their divorce, the pair remained friendly and Powell felt she would be perfect in the role of Irene.

Been a big fan of Godfrey for decades! I was excited to hear Lombard and Powell were in something else, but No Man of Her Own stars Carole and Clark, not William. Man of the World stars Lombard and Powell together. Not as good as My Man Godfrey, but definitely worth a once over. Also found Powell in a movie where he plays a butler (shock 😲) to an aging European duke or something. He takes such good care of the old guy, covering his mistakes hunting, meeting needs/preferences, but winds up running against him in a political race all while faithfully serving/caring for the family. Really cool movie except that he steals the baron's (?) daughter from her husband - not a bad guy. 😕 Check it out and enjoy if you are a as big a Powell fan as I am!

Can you find anywhere Russ Columbo lived? I know he's buried in Forrest Lawn still close to Ms. Lombard. He sang at the Coconut Grove. That's all (landmarks) I've been as able to find in conjunction with Mr. Coloumbo. It has been said several times that Carole Lombard said that "Russ Columbo was the love of her life." Their love story is a very special one.
