- Police say they’ve apprehended a man who was sought after in a string of robberies, including this smash-and-grab incident in the Bronx. The NYPD says in this incident, he smashed the front window of a jewelry store, then reached in and started grabbing the merchandise on display. Meanwhile another man held a bag that the first man kept stuffing with his loot. The store was open at the time and someone inside tried to lower the mechanical gate. Inside Edition Digital’s Mara Montalbano has more.

It happened once to a homeowner. Guy broke into a person's garage and got hurt trying to get out. The garage door opener did not work properly injuring the robber. The robber sued and won in court.

Seen it in Adelaide at a jewellery store car parked up next to the store in alley driver got out tried to break window but failed panicked reversed his car fast hit building and a 70 year old lady breaking her hips he was arrested by the public this was 25 years ago

I manage a store, we got hit “$4,000” I followed the thieves without them noticing, grabbed the license plate, with that I recognized the actual register owner which was one of the thieves and the detective in charge couldn’t arrest the guy. It’s been 6 months and I haven’t received an update. SMH

Barbaric! I was a Silversmith and jeweler for a few years. So many of my friends in the trade got out of it because it is such a magnet for criminals. They come by one day trying to hawk stolen items, then come back and try to break in.

Japan is a good example of a low crime rate , then again, they can hold you a month without charging you with anything. It doesn't seem fair but it sure deters people from taking dumb chances and possibly ending up in a situation like that. Kind of like the opposite in the U.S. where as long as you dont deal drugs or kill someone, youl be out in the same day.

I don't think what they did was right at all. I pride myself on being honest but who pays $20 a hr for a Labor?. Not around my way at least. You're lucky to clear $10 after taxes where I'm from.

This looks like the kind of robbery you wonder about as a kid in a “why aren’t stores afraid this will happen” kind of way. Only to reach adulthood & realize it’s an incredibly stupid thing for someone to do.
Maybe somebody should make some powerfull pepper dumpers so it can be installed as self defense tool above windows like this, should have some remote mechanical or electric release... I doubt this would be dangerous for innocent since no one hangs around these situations

A few years back I did some traveling and I remember driving through a city in what I recognized as a "bad neighborhood". I could tell this because it was all pawn shops and liquor stores. Where I come from businesses in these kinds of places all have barred windows, but there were no bars in this neighborhood. I wondered what they did when they closed up. Then I noticed they all had these kinds of garage door like gates. I believe in this particular instance maybe the bars would have worked better, provided the merchandise was far enough from the window that the perps couldn't reach it. I'm pretty sure businesses have insurance for these kinds of things anyway these days. When I worked the "late" shift at a gas station I was told as much. "Just give them the money, and then call the cops when they leave, We have insurance for this. Don't be a hero, etc....."
Insurance for some has become cost prohibitive and I suspect they had none in this area.
Once you have an insurance claim, your renewal will be sky high next time.
We need to punish these thieves like they did in olden times.

I’d go a step further after he pays for all the damages; he should be sent to the factory where the merchandise is made and be forced to manufacture or assemble for a year without a day off.

I believe the reason for this is obviously the mechanical shutters. At night, the gates would be down, so you'd have to smash and grab while the store is open.
