Milbury's worst move was actually a combination. Two years after drafting Roberto Luongo 4th overall and declaring Luongo to be the Islanders' "goalie of the future", and after a handful of games with the Islanders proved to Milbury that Luongo "didn't have it", he traded Luongo & Olli Jokinen to Florida for complete dud Oleg Kvasha & decent but injury prone Mark Parrish, then drafted Rick DiPietro with the #1 overall pick, ahead of Dany Heatley & Marion Gaborik. He completed this parlay by trading the Islanders only other experienced goalie, Kevin Weekes, leaving himself with no goalie for the upcoming season, because DiPietro was going back to college for one more year, LOL.

Only 1 other team in the 2010s decade had back to back presidents trophies. And chiarelli isn't entirely bad. His tenure in Edmonton yes was awful but in Boston he led the Bruins to their first stanley cup in nearly 40 years and they did come 2 wins short in 2013 as well and also got the presidents trophy in 2014.

It's a team that had years of frustration, overcame setbacks to run into further brick walls. When they are ready to contend for a Cup, someone overshadows them and blocks it away. The 2011 team was their best chance to win. Unlike 1982 and 1994, this time, they were the favourite, and it couldn't have come at a better time. They just vanquished the deeply hated Blackhawks, they hosted the Olympics the year before, their star player led team Canada to gold, and they were set to meet Prince William and Princess Kate with the Cup on Canada Day (if they won). There was too much riding on this, it just, well you know, was scripted to have them hoist it.

yes that 2011 run was quite entertaining and their only real chance. And they sure did have their share of torment beforehand especially with chicago in round 2 in both 2009 and 2010 and finally getting their revenge against them in the first round in 2011 albeit barely cause they had a 3-0 lead in the series at one point then the defending champion blackhawks clawed their way back to force a game 7 which would go into OT and Alex Burrows sealing the deal. If the blackhawks were to have won game 7 in OT instead of the Canucks it would've been one of the biggest letdowns inot jsut in the 2010s decade but in league history altogether since the hawks barely made the playoffs that year as the 2nd wild card 8th seed and the canucks were the presidents trophy winners and people in the canucks organization like Alain Vigenault, Rick Bowness, Mike Gillis, etc would've been on the verge of losing their jobs so the entire organization and their fans really dodged a bullet there narrowly avoiding an epic collapse. Round 2 against Nashville was pretty hard fought too going in six then they breezed by San Jose like nothing and the final against the 3rd seeded Bruins the did have a lead in the series on 2 seperate occassions with a 2-0 lead at one point then the bruins fighting back to tie it at 2 then the canucks won game 5 to take a 3-2 lead going into game 6 giving them a chance to end it and win it in game 6 but the bruins would win forcing a game 7 which they won as well completing the upset.
I obviously was rooting for boston in the final so I don't care much ab the canucks coughing up those leads tbh. I was rooting for the hawks in round 1 and the canucks won fair and square and good for the fans to finally get peace and chicago ofc won another cup just 2 yrs later in the lockout yr so whatever. I was rooting for the predators in round 2 personally but I knew the canucks were gonna win deep down given how resilient they were against chicago. I did root for the canucks over the sharks though in round 3. I was never much of a canucks fan but I sure did respect them hell out of them in the early 2010s and the sedin twins were 2 of my biggest idols growing up. Kesler, Burrows, Luongo, Hamhuis, Raymond, Vigenault, Bowness, etc too I respect the hell out of them! And god bless Rick Rypien🙏 Im sure losing game 7 of final had a little bit to do with his suicide besides the depression and PCS🧠🙏@@broadstreet21

Mike milbury is unfairly maligned and a deep dive into his GM shows when he had resources he put a good team together with yashin, Peca, Osgood, aucoin, hamerlik, jonsson, brought in an up and coming hot coach in Peter laviolette (his 1st NHL job) milbury wasn't the guy who traded turgeon for Kirk Mueller, was forced by the Milstein/gluckstern owners to pare down team salary to under 20m, had to trade Ziggy, a multiple 40+ goal scorer, as a salary dump. Was holding the fort during the John Spano debacle (bettmans tar baby) before u go ballistic none of luongo, bertuzzi or Chara would have developed into the players they became on the late 90s/early 2000 Islanders, team was operating on a minimal budget, it's scouting/ development staff was very small. They also had no centers basically getting two established NHL centers in yashin (check his numbers out at the time of the trade) + Peca(excellent 2 way centre) added much needed talent. Not that Mike doesn't deserve criticism, he blew the 2000 draft for sure taking RDP & RAFFI TORRES(SCOTT HARTNELL went a pick later) and Inexcusably passed over Zach Parise in the 2003 draft. The instability of the franchise post arbour/Torrey wasn't Mike's fault, ownership and arena issues plagued the organization till they got UBS arena in Belmont..

No Lou Nanne?!? The only reason he initially turned the North Stars around was because of the merger with the Cleveland Barons. This gave him 2 rosters to choose which players to keep & who to trade off. Yes he drafted Bobby Smith, Brian Bellows, & Mike Modano BUT when he could have picked either Steve Yzerman or Pat LaFontaine; Lou picked Brian Lawton #1 OUCH!
Plus his constant coaching changes & trading away his best player at the time in Bobby Smith, sank the North Stars. The Met Center attendance was dwindling long before Norm Green moved them to Dallas. There was once a Sports Illustrated article called "Falling Stars" talking about how bad things had gotten for the North Stars. Lou Nanne received much of the blame.

Multiple president trophies, one win away from the stanley cup, signing sundin (although overpaid for the contract) took the sedins to another level to which they peaked at 100+ points and back to back art ross. Not to mention how you could bash signing malhotra. 2.5 mill for a faceoff king 3rd line centre man was great value until his freak eye injury...

Reinhart had familiarity in Edmonton from playing for the Oil Kings in the WHL and was old enough to learn and grow in the NHL after being drafted a few years prior. Does that justify the trade?
