I think it's noble to release your final version of a game and say it belongs to the community now. Some modders NEVER release their work and only release teasers even as decades go by. (Megaman X Corrupted) At at least other modders can pick up from where you left off if they're dedicated enough.
@@curlybrace4984 In their defense, there is something to be said for commandeering a project that's been abandoned, even against the original creator's wishes. Not sure if I really agree with it here, but this isn't purely a case of people being assholes.
Perhaps to be done with the game unless Chris himself decides to do anything further. If he just fixed a few things about his last build it'd be totally a full playable experience. Just a shame that the others had to screw around and the whole situation became a dumpster fire. And to get a bit philosophical, not that this is the intent of all the drama, but the 'what it could have been' is honestly some part of the appeal. I got hours of fun of just running around and honestly I feel like peoples individual expectations and peoples imagination of the final result IS the '1.0' final release we all wanted. If you think about what inspired this beta stuff and the ARG/dreamlike stuff, a lot of the beta tapes/other related media its based off of, a lot of the mystery comes from wanting to know whats behind the next door, wanting to access a new area for the first time, the unique 'personalized' experience. And no matter how great and how perfect a final release could have been, ultimately, at some point you'd reach the end, discover everything, know exactly what is behind each door and don't feel threatened by everything. This is not to disrespect the romhack at all, I love it, and I'm always wanting more. Everyone is. And that's kind of the point. You want more, so you get more, you get used to it, and just want more anyways. You want to know whats behind the next door, until you know what is there, then the mystery is ruined. But we can't always just have more. In not just 0.9 but ANY beta hack that would be ever made around this 'genre' of sm64 media, you'd run around and after you experience things for the first time, it becomes less and less mysterious, and the charm goes from being on edge with everything, to just running around knowing that if you see something spooky and touch it the game is just going to crash. The appeal to all our childhood dreams of this game is wanting to know what could possibly be behind the door we couldn't reach before a dream ended, and you could imagine anything, far greater than even the 'best possible level' you could ever actually come up with yourself. The mystery, and what could have been, was the true appeal the whole time. I'm glad we all got to look at the environments and experience what we did while we could. It was far, far better than nothing.
this is kinda how I'm seeing it too. For a mod inspired by the unknowable mysteries of the unfinished beta to be left "abandoned" is so fitting. I can be satisfied because wondering "what could have been" is such a core part of why betas are so longed after.
The way I see it, the whole point of b33 is to get lost and discover things you didn't know existed and might not be able to find again. The star IDs ultimately don't matter, because it was never about star count, and you can see everything the game has to offer in 0.9 except like 4 small areas that were on the chopping block anyway. 0.9 is the definitive experience.
Its sad to see some people are unable to control their emotions to this much of an extent. I just wish both sides of the debate could settle their issues and come to a mutual agreement.

It's all a shame. B3313 as a concept still has lots of potential. I'm all mixed up about whether 0.9 or unabandoned is the proper way to experience the best of the hack. On one hand 0.9 has quite a few annoyances that hamper the overall experience, unabandoned being taken up and made to be the final version (even as it plays better) hampers the experience of wondering what could've been. Still, I never really cared who worked on B3313, or even wanted to know the drama behind it all. What mattered to me was the version an anon on /v/ peddled.
After playing both the Abandoned and Unabandoned builds of B3313, it all boils down to whether you want Star IDs fixed or not, as well as having intentional crashes mostly changed to instant deaths instead (assuming you aren't a fan of save stating or restarting the emulator). I do have some issues with the Unabandoned build, due to it having some errors and oversights that weren't present in the Abandoned build or just weren't fixed at all. But at the end of the day, if ignoring the drama behind the Unabandoned build's release, both versions are proper ways to experience the hack, since they have the same contents overall.
