  • Hi, in this video I attempt to repair a Sphero R2D2 droid which locks up every time it moves.
If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

I thought you would enjoy trying to fix my little R2. I do need to also aquire an R2Q5 and a BB9e and have a 'watch with me' session. When I got the R2 unit, the R2Q5 were selling as faulty for £15-£25 but now cant find any except the over-priced fully working ones. If you see 1 then snap them up. The middle leg not working is a common fault. I wont do a spoiler and say how this one ends but I did appreciate the time and effort and money that you put into this to try and get it working.

Nice fix ! R2D2 is now back in action.
The metal things (fingers as you call them) which power the rotor windings are called brushes (this type of motor is called a brushed motor). My guess is that they overheated and deformed when the motor was jammed.

Vince for broken plastic use super glue to glue the two halves together. Then apply a bead of super glue to where the break is then sprinkle baking soda over the bead of super glue. That will harden like a rock almost instantly. Then just sand if necessary an dust off. An your done. I have fixed loads of things like this.

There was a much easier way of swapping things where you would've have to solder anything. You could've just swapped the connector plugs. It's very easy to repin them. You just pull back the little clips on the plug and slide the wires out. I've swapped many plugs on different revision boards.

    • @isaiahwade1484
      @isaiahwade1484 3 роки тому

@Ellis The DJ it's nowhere near too much hard work. It takes like 2 minutes to swap the plugs and then the legs wouldn't even need to be taken apart to test the motors. And if the entire boards on something needs to be swapped you don't have to cut wires and resolder stuff.

Regards the chips driving the motors - it's common for one of the output drivers to fail in the chip, and leave the other one working! ie. those types of chips often don't completely fail - just one of the drivers... If a motor fails to work, it can detect that via lack of pulses from the hall effect sensor, and it will cut out (safety) - same thing will happen if a motor shorts out and pulls too much current. Great job =D It's scarey how many parts go into those! You must have spent hours and hours on these!!! "If someone gave me another one of these now, I wouldn't do it, but..." =D Incredible the detail on these - particularly how well R2 moves around. Amazed at BB8 movement too tbh! We didn't have toys like this when we were kids!!!

    • @Mymatevince

Thanks Chris. Many hours went into them!!! R2D2 is so lifelike, the sounds and movements are very good. A lot of research must have gone into developing these, like a modern day Tomy toy from the 1980s.

Hey Vince, I wanted to share a trick I do sometimes to melt plastic parts, what I do is get bits of component leads from capacitors that are a bit more sturdy, I bend them in a zig-zag way and with my soldering iron I press them into the plastic bridging both parts.
This way it gives more strength to the part and less chance for separation.
This trick I actually learned from plastic welding car parts like broken bumpers, they use spiral like tabs to push in to the plastic.

I now have 2 R2 units and my fella has a BB8. a few nights ago, 1 of my R2 droids suddenly powered itself up and also the BB8 and they had a little chat to each other. The R2 was set to human interaction and the BB8 was set to droid interaction. The droids had been off for 23-24 hours. Unsure why it powered up, maybe a signal from the TV but I love the little quirks.

@@DEmma1972 Funny, mine have done that sometimes too. Although, it could be a malfunction in my case. A few weeks ago, I was woken up by my R2, who decided to start lighting up at 2 in the morning! Those lights are pretty bright when it's dark, the whole room was glowing red and blue. It didn't beep or move, but it flashed the light for 5 minutes or so, then turned back off on its own. It was the same thing that happens when R2 is in deep sleep mode, and you plug him in, where the light flashes for a long period of time, before shutting off on his own. He wasn't plugged in or connected to an app, (the third leg didn't roll out, if he is connected to an app, it automatically comes out no matter what.) so I have no clue what woke him up.

They sit in a bin without the batteries now, but they are pretty fun to mess with every so often. I'd enjoy seeing Hasbro redesign that R2-D2 from 2002 to work as life-like as possible. You know, going all out with the voice commands, and maybe adding an RC mode like Spin Masters BB-8. Who knows, maybe I'll give that a shot one of these days.

Awesome repair, Vince! I can't count the number of things i've attempted to fix (most successfully), simply because of watching you work, and learning that for most, it's a very simple thing, while others simply can't be fixed, but all give you an opportunity to learn.

Great job! I love seeing how your diagnostic skills have improved over the last year or two. Very complex little toy. If the motor fails again, you could maybe try pulling the bass pulley off the motor shaft (tight press fit) which would let you pull the inner armature assembly out of the motor . You could then get at the bent brushes to try a more long term fix. Hold brass pulley in a vice and tap shaft with small hammer to drift it out. Those el-cheapo motors were never designed to last long though.

I'm surprised you had different connectors for the two right legs - L and R are reversed, but should be the same for the same side leg.
