Mike (Fred Willard) recalls his short-lived career as a television personality and how he came to discover the Main Street Singers.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The writing and directing team who created Waiting For Guffman and Best In Show turn their satiric eye toward the world of folk music in this sly mockumentary. Irving Steinbloom was one of the great behind-the-scenes figures of the folk music boom of the late '50s and early '60s, and helped to nurture the careers of three of the best known acts of the era. The Folksmen -- Mark Shubb (Harry Shearer), Alan Barrows (Christopher Guest), and Jerry Palter (Michael McKean) -- were an earnest folk trio who sang of America's noble past and the challenges of the future; they split up in the early '70s after a failed attempt to go electric. Mitch & Mickey were a duo in both music and life, comprised of Mitch Cohen (Eugene Levy) and Mickey Devlin (Catherine O'Hara). They sang soulful songs of love until the collapse of their relationship sent Mitch into a deep and incapacitating depression. And The Main Street Singers were a nine-piece vocal group -- a "neuftet," as they prefer it -- who offered energetic good-time music, cranking out nearly 30 albums in the course of a decade; their current incarnation, The New Main Street Singers (played by Jane Lynch, Parker Posey, John Michael Higgins, David Alan Blasucci, Steve Pandis, Christopher Moynihan, Paul Dooley and Patrick Sauber) is still on the road. When it is announced that the legendary Irving Steinbloom has died (the character never appears in the film), his son Jonathan (Bob Balaban) decides that the best way to memorialize his father is through music, and with the help of Mike LaFontaine (Fred Willard) of Hi-Class Management, they set out to bring The Folksmen, Mitch & Mickey, and The New Main Street Singers back together for a special concert at New York's Town Hall. Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer -- who previously teamed up for This Is Spinal Tap -- not only perform together as The Folksmen in A Mighty Wind, but composed most of the songs performed onscreen.

That's pure improv skill. His asides "folk audiences hated that joke" "you do not want to be on a cruise ship when dysentery breaks out" in the middle of the story are just next level!

Hysterical indeed, this is still one of my favorite scenes & the whole movie is so special. I’ve always thought the same about the “a real red wagon” (lol or “I can’t do my worrrrk!”) which only makes it that much funnier.
It's funny because there are so many counterfeit red wagons out there.
Maybe it was supposed to be some kind in-joke?
Random, stupid catch-phrases like that were commonplace on 1970s TV sitcoms (he mentions it was the '70s). I remember watching those shows as a kid. Fred is _perfectly_ capturing their lameness here.

He could have gone on and on and on and it would have never stopped being funny.
If it's anything like Spinal Tap (which had hours and hours of footage that didn't make it into the final cut) the scene likely does go on and on, and I bet it never stops being funny.

I remember when I saw this in the theater- everyone cheered when this scene started. They’d obviously all seen his performance in Best In Show and knew that what they were about to see was gonna be gold.

He was hilarious in his bit part in Spinal Tap. A natural scene stealer.
I've seen this a hundred times, but I just paused on the Variety page for the first time. "After a dismal four episodes, 'Wha' Happened' has been yanked from the airwaves and judging by it's pathetic numbers, it won't be missed". Knowing the show only had 4 episodes makes this even better.

Even funnier, later in the article it says that he only got the show because his uncle is a studio executive and that this was his third cancelled show in 18 months.
And that in that four episodes they already had five catchphrases
The best part of this is that the character is supposed to be a failed comedian. So Fred Willard can ad-lib the lamest jokes and it all fits. This is like the lowest pressure comedy - the more you bomb, the better the bit.

One of the only people I've ever seen in my 54 years that would automatically make you smile upon hearing his name or seeing his name in the opening credits for a movie or tv show. He was always funny. RIP Sir, you brought us joy.

This is the first time I noticed the shot of liquor sitting in front of him. He keeps eyeing it thirstily...🤣 Just another hilarious element to one of the funniest scenes in film history. Damn that guy was a pro! RIP
I've watched this scene about 100 times and never noticed that until now. Amazing.
Related (because Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara are in this film): in the "Five Neat Guys" sketches on SCTV, Joe Flaherty's character is extremely hammered in every scene.
That's like that thing I think is about as brilliantly humorous as maybe anything the Coen Bros ever did, that scene in The Hudsucker Proxy when Steve Gallagher is playing a character who seems a perfect morphing of Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra, singing Memories are Made of This. There's a very brief pause in the vocals and he starts to raise his highball glass to his mouth but before it gets there he has to continue singing.
About 17 hilarious lines in a little over 2 minutes. RIP to a true genius

I remember watching this movie on DVD with the commentary by Levy and Guest. Apparently Fred Willard could improvise nonstop for as long as you were willing to let the cameras run and then keep going. A level of brilliance missed in so much modern comedy.

Fred Willard. A comedy God who always dove in commando-style to brutally and efficiently cram in two years worth of jokes into two minutes.
You had to love his total ability to just be completely unaffected by his banality. Probably the best at what he did it just was so cheesy yet he could do a lot of other things too. Anchorman was a good one for sure just a very funny guy I do miss him greatly

This look alone was enough to make my late wife and I immediately start howling with laughter. He looks so silly. What a legend.
There's so much to love in this movie, so many great lines and performances, but I always find myself thinking how much less this film would have been without him and Jane Lynch.

102.1 the edge Canadian radio station had a morning show, in which people would call in and tell crazy inappropriate stories that would not fly on the radio today. The show was called "Wha Happen" and they had a soundboard of Fred they would always use for the segment. My mom, brother, and 2 friends looked forward to this every morning on the drive to secondary school.
