  • Harbour Town Lighthouse is Fake! I grew up going to Harbour Town and watching Gregg Russell sing each summer under the Liberty Oak but this year I had an eye opening revelation. A photo was shown to me of Arnold Palmer winning a golf tournament at Sea Pines in 1969 and in the back of the photo you could see the construction of the Harbour Town Lighthouse. This Hilton Head Lighthouse was built as a backdrop for Sea Pines as a tourist destination. Harbour Town Lighthouse is not a historic lighthouse.
After realizing my entire childhood was fake we set out to find Hilton Head's true lighthouse. It is located in Palmetto Dunes Resort. The Rear Range Lighthouse also know as Leamington Lighthouse was built in 1879. This location of the Rear Range Lighthouse is also home to one of Hilton Head's oldest live oak trees estimated to be over 450 years old.
The Rear Range Lighthouse was constructed to guide vessels into Port Royal Sound. The cast-iron skeleton tower stands 92 feet tall. This Hilton Head Lighthouse was activated in 1880. Light from the structure was visible from 15 miles away. During World War II the structure served as an important lookout tower for enemy ships and anchored Camp McDougal.

It is an interesting lighthouse for sure. The Oak tree is awesome. Glad to see it still standing, it's been a few years since we have been there.
