I love this song because it puts me in such a great mood. I especially love the image of soaking in a tub with bubbles meeting bubbles and becoming one. Many a time I've hugged a pillow to my side, too.
This song has a real bonfire night/ almost Christmas vibe to it. 'A crowd starts to gather on paving stone square' says maybe fireworks or a tree lighting ceremony. Takes me right back 20 years to when I was a teenager and captures all the joy and the angst perfectly. Fantastic song. Criminally overlooked.
I asked Glenn and Chris their favorite b side and they said it was this one. I did ask them to play and he couldn't remember the chords, but it definitely should have been on the album!
I visited Maidstone, briefly, after visit to Battle (1066) -had dinner at a Pub. A few years later, driving on highway tour, passed by Maidstone on the highway. I quietly receipted lyrics to this song, on both trips (2006/ 2019). I did see Glen T' "live on a solo tour" in the late 90's, tour with Marshall Crenshaw -and Glen played "Maidstone" by audience request. Joy!
So brilliant! I love the mandolin. Thanks for adding the lyrics. Chris Difford's genius lyrics are the only lyrics that would be deserving of Glenn Tilbrook's unbelievably genius gift of melody, song writing and his gift for arrangement. Not to mention his gifts for being one of the best guitarists ever and that voice... after all of these years his voice still gives me shivers and transports me. How can one person have four, (I didn't miscount, arrangement in no easy feat), such powerful gifts?!!!
I spent the first 21 years of my life living in Maidstone, and listening to this song to this day I can still visualise every line as being somewhere in that town. I was actually a little deflated when I found that Chris Difford didn't write it about Maidstone at all - apparently he had relatives that lived there at the time, and he just used the town's name as a title because it sounded as good as anywhere else! If you want to see some amazing guitar, watch Glenn perform this song solo on the 12-string acoustic - he manages to play the mandolin part and the chords at the same time on the alternating strings!
Ah, my home town in a song by my favourite band. I was gutted that they never mentioned Atomic's nightclub, Tony Hart or the Royal Star Arcade. Pleased to see that the Chequers Centre (AKA Stoenborough) gets a mention!
How does a record company make this gem the B-side of a single that only made it to #87 in the UK and didn't even chart in the US? This is so clearly a Hit Song.
Hi band thanks for the music and all that you have done great work and this song is really good and great and I love the it so much its one of the best song you have ever played thanks so much love jay h
Poke yer lennon and McCartney, these guys are so much more relevant. As an East London boy I doff my cap to squeeze. I've even crossed the river to see the musical. Twice!!!
Still the greatest Squeeze song! And that’s saying something, as they had some amazing songs
As a Squeeze fan that was born and bred in Maidstone, this song makes me immensely proud :-)
One of my all time favourite songs, brilliant, absolutely love it
.......it's true........I can't live without loving songs as joyous as this one! I bloody LOVE Squeeze!

I just love discovering gems by Squeeze that I'd never heard before. With "Sunday Street" this could have been a double "A" side single.
Love the piano

Beautifully crafted song.

There are a few folks like this: Paul Mccartney, Stevie Wonder, Prince, and Todd Rundgren being a short list.
Always been one of my favourites-hey they can sing, clever lyrics. Not like today's crap!
best squeeze song great lyrics
This is only my opinion… but I think it is one of their greatest songs, such a great story…
I know they're Sarf London but I think that They could read My thoughts when I was in My 20s in NW London in the early 90s😂😂😂
Always an underrated favorite!!
Thankyou~~
I love this song.
Just love this song

As a fellow Maidstonian, I can understand the disappointment. For some reason I thought the pub mentioned was the Muggleton.

Just discovered this great song through their facebook page.So pleased that I joined.
Brilliant song
This song was made well before 1991, If I remember it was one of the most popular live songs in the 80's but never appeared on an album.
Uncanny....I keep finding Squeeze songs that I like .......
Très belle chanson
These 2 are fucking geniuses. ❤
Great tune...
Superb
I was doing research of sqeeze I hope just 2 discs of them they are good when he played the mandolin it blue me away
One of Squeezes "Hollies," type songs.
This should have been the A side.
I totally agree.

See what the fella said below, I agree with Him.
Far too good a track to have been left off "Play" and relegated to the B side of "Sunday Street" !
Anyone else hear echoes of 'Amie' by Pure Prairie League here?
no, not even slightly.
I hear Maggie Mae because of the mandolin
The mandolin does add a nice touch doesn't it?
Does not mention the Carriage Museum. FAIL.
Nearly spat my tea out when I read this!!! Lived in Maidstone for many years... this comment wins 🏆
