  • Good rear brake technique is important to develop into muscle memory.
On flatter ground as you transition between standing and sitting coming into a turn, lift your foot off the peg slightly and come down on the brake pedal with the inside of your right boot/toe. This is a more decisive technique of braking for a turn that will allow you to feel the engagement point more accurately and utilize the weight of your entire leg to really add extra braking power as needed. Be careful not to lock up the rear when you first start trying this technique. When done braking, lift your foot back off the pedal and get on to the ball of your foot to transition back to standing/attack position as you accelerate out of the turn. If it's a right hander, brake a little earlier and then get your right foot/leg out forward as you accelerate out.
Coming up to downhills before you crest the top of the hill, lift your foot off the peg and find the brake pedal tip. Then rock your ankle back so the arch of your foot is on the peg. You need to stay standing for downhills and be able to rock your ankle to apply rear brakes. Keep weight on both of the footpegs is critical to proper control and balance while riding downhill. Once you get faster and more comfortable finding the rear brake, you will be able to ride on the balls of BOTH feet and adjust as needed to apply rear brakes.

So the boots should be loose enough around the calf to allow enough ankle flex?

@@bobjenkins3rd your boots should be tight but still comfy. Most reputable brands/models of boots have good ankle pivot features. I’m partial to Astars Tech 7’s but I hear good things about the Gaerne SG12’s. Both are great mid-level boots. Not cheapos but also not stupid expensive.
