Kelly Saves A Desert Tortoise
Riding in Marana, my buddy Kelly saves a Desert Tortoise. If you ask me, you can learn a lot about a person by the way they treat animals...Kelly just went up a few points in my book...now he's at a few points haha!

Come along for a lap around 11 Mile in Marana, AZ. This is a great race training loop with TONS of whoops and back and forth tuns over mostly hard-pack and sand. It's not particularly hard to ride but very challenging to ride fast! Many of us from around the area keep track of our lap times on 11 Mile to give an idea of physical condition and riding improvement...some use Strava but I just use ...

Red Springs group ride I set up on 12/3/23. Bunch of riders from the Trail Riders of Southern Arizona club: me, Joe, Roy, Mario, Gerald, Arnold, Anthony, Kelly V, and Kelly B. Good solid group and great day out riding! Only one rider got hurt but it was nothing life-changing...and he was all smiles! We're super lucky to have riding like this out here and every time I'm out there I get this over...

Reno 2 Vegas Training Ride with Joe: High speed riding on kTm 450 XC-F

Doing some high-speed riding to help my buddy Joe train for the Reno to Vegas race coming up in a couple weeks. We kept it to about 75mph top speed but the race bike will do 100mph! No need to take chances while training but Joe still let it rip on the straights. He's on a 500 EXCF that also has a Scott's stabilizer setup. My 450 XC-F can accelerate faster but he can hold a higher top speed! Th...
2023 AMRA Kelly Canyon Test 1 Shoulder Injury Crash

Crashed 10 minutes into the first test because I was riding too fast...no room for error. This was purely a mental mistake. I was so excited for the race because I finally felt properly prepared going in and was hoping to do well. Should've been focused on settling into a comfortable rhythm around 80% or so but I was riding at about my limits and paid the price...grade 3 separated shoulder...lo...

Thanks a lot for the tips. As a beginner this is useful information. Btw I got the same boots 😎
So the boots should be loose enough around the calf to allow enough ankle flex?
😂 I have “chicken legs” and need my MX socks and knee guards to fill everything out!
@@BFAMOTO oooh ok I’m new lol
@@bobjenkins3rd your boots should be tight but still comfy. Most reputable brands/models of boots have good ankle pivot features. I’m partial to Astars Tech 7’s but I hear good things about the Gaerne SG12’s. Both are great mid-level boots. Not cheapos but also not stupid expensive.
Sound don’t mean shit. How bout the ridability?
Didn’t put too many hours on the stock pipe so a little hard to compare. If I had to comment I’d say it feels like the slight increase in low to mid range power also came with a smoothed out delivery if that makes sense. More noticeable on the “easy” map setting than the all out map.
@@BFAMOTO makes perfect sense. Thank you
Looks rowdy af lol its shaking so much
Kind of true in general about the 450 XC-F! I will say it doesn’t look as bad when actually on the ground and sitting on it…probably because your body is absorbing it all!
Ha! I did what I could! Thanks for posting it up as wondered how goofy I looked doing a slow crash, lol!
Nice
How can i get to this single track?
You can access just North of the Gardner Middle School in San Manuel. Trail Riders of Southern Arizona have club rides there pretty frequently and are hosting an AMRA race on March 9th using these same trails!
@@BFAMOTO alright thanks i ride the single tracks out there alot but ive never seen this one looks fun
Nice, just some DB killer have no hole at the end. Just need to hook on one side 🤗
Glad you got to have some rippin fun! Wish we would have gotten down to the South loop and the waterfall. Sadly, some in my group was already getting tired when I would have turned for down there but instead I took them back to the museum.
Yeah, it was a great day! First time riding with Steve and Joey….we had a fun group and covered a LOT of ground!
IDK what year your ktm is. But ktm had an update. Slack should be 68 to 70mm on 2022.5 and newer bikes. You can take the bottom shock bolt and one link bolt out and check for yourself.
Great riding with you on Sunday! Oh, glad you found the trail you were looking for. Beers and I are pretty proud of it . BTW, we'll be hitting Marana this weekend if you want to join us.
Thanks for posting
thanks, nice video! but that should i do if i bought clapped ktm and all the spokes ar different(like most of them are changed)and theyre braking really often, and the only tool with alot of heads are like 150$
If the spokes are breaking often there might be another problem. Can you check rim runout? Even if just on the bike, spin the wheel and look for bent spots in all directions. If the rim looks pretty good I would get a full set of new spokes and change them out next tire change.
@@BFAMOTO yeah the rim runout is okay, if they will brake again too, i will replace all of them, thanks!
Looking good - can not wait to get out there again !!!
Shoulder all healed up it appears.
Yup, I hit PT hard and have been back on the bike for about 3 weeks now. Riding Red Springs in the morning but we should do some Marana soon!
@@BFAMOTO I'm going out in the morning and beat up Marana. Have fun down in Red Spring.
There is actually a chart I have seen listing tge musical note needed to tune bicycle spokes based on length and thickness of the spoke…do a google search. I have not seen one that applies to motorcycle spokes unfortunately
'Promo sm' 😌
Sounds deeper
Deeper note for sure…and louder! Especially when on the gas.
Is it faster
@@pipefitterdirtbikerider3013 hard to say for sure because I didn’t put much time on the stock exhaust…but the bike absolutely rips with the FMF full exhaust! I needed the ability to put a spark arrestor in for racing too. It will also pass our typical 96dB sound restriction with just the spark arrestor screen. You can get a quiet insert too but I haven’t used it at all.
I'm sorry about your accident and injury, hope you get healed up soon!!😎🙏👍
Nice video. Is the GPX file for this loop available anywhere? Thanks.
I was thinking I should match the highest pitch currently on the wheel? after watching this I am thinking it would be best to find the most constant across all the spokes and maybe lower the higher ones if they are in the minority.
yes, that's typically what i do...find the higher ones and lower them to balance the rest...or find the extremely low/loose ones and bring them up slightly to match the rest. this definitely isn't a substitute for using a spoke torque wrench...just a quick way to find extremes either too tight or too loose and get them back closer with the rest
Great information. Thank you!
So I know absolutely nothing about dirt bike racing, but I thought it was wild that you have to start the race with the bike off. One of those little things that I imagine can make or break the start of a race. Good riding! Looked like a beautiful day in the desert.
Dead Engine Starts are more of an offroad racing thing...motocross with gates that drop you would have the engine on and bouncing off the rev limiter.
Kudos for checking on that downed rider and helping him as much as you could.
Just bought a place in munds and looking to explore the single track when everything melts. Any chance you have single track GPX files available for these trails? Looks epic
It is epic...and yes I have gpx files I could send. You're going love living right there in the middle of it all. Kelly Canyon was my favorite parts. Send me your email and I will share them!
That would be awesome man. It is my first name.last name at g. Mail
What a cool area! Which power setting are you running in? I tend to run mine in the lower power setting. The higher setting makes my throttle feel twitchy.
Hey man, I pretty much leave it on the Map 1 setting. It likes to break traction enough as it is and like you said, it keeps the throttle response a bit smoother!
Yoooo- I’m the guy on thd husky around the 28 minute mark. Good riding with ya.
Hey man yes it was fun riding with you guys for a bit...you were shredding on that Husky! Very cool setup you had too, wasn't it a rally-type kit?
Yeah, that was me with the Nomad-Adv rally tower on the fe501. I can’t believe you got that big girl through the single track, you’re a machine!
Love the video! I was riding with Kris, and that was one of my favorite days out in quite a while. Let me know if you ever need more riders for future content, etc. 🤘
@@KobyDecker Heck yeah and it was obvious you were having a blast...same here! I'll be back up for next year too.
@@Agentwilliams122 Yeah but not without a couple boo-boo's! Those dirt roads and wide open fields is where it really shined 😉
I'd love to have the gpx file
For sure man, what's the best way to send it to you?
Me too! Can I get the file?
Nice ride! Your dad splashed you good, perfect timing..lol😎👍⛰️
Poor camera angle right into the sun, couldn't see anything
Nice video - looks like a great day for riding. Bit of a wetlands at the end though!
A but faster than our mountain biking trips! Looks fun
Great video Brad ! Your Dad is just thrilled. Great riding both of you. Tomorrow your Dad and I will ride around the forests on our adventure bikes. Hope you make it to Central New York to join us sometime. Andy P.
Awesome! Glad you guys ride together still...it would be awesome to visit!
But how do you know which tone is the right tone?
Exactly, it's not a perfect method just a quick way to make sure you don't overly tight or loose spokes relative to the others. Ideally the spokes would have just the minimum tension require to true the wheel and no more which you'd have to start with them all loose and go from there...which would give you an idea of the starting point.
I thought I could insert a screen shot of the service manual here but spoke nipple torque for my dirt bike says 4.4ftlbs...which basically is all the way loose, snug back, then maybe 1/2 to a full turn. That would be your starting point tone if you needed to figure it out.
Take a quick listen to multiple spokes, then decide on the average tone- dont take into account the outliers, the ones that are way off the average tone. Be conservative while adjusting.
A guitar tuner could absolutely be used to get a measurement of the pitch of each spoke and help balance the tension on them. Keep in mind that balancing the tension on the spokes doesn't necessarily mean the wheel will be true. In fact, sometimes spokes will have to be tighter or looser to true a wheel. The pitch method is definitely a good starting point though. Just make sure the wheel runout is acceptable after and adjust accordingly.
You video makes me feel VINDICATED, I've been adjusting spokes with a battered old guitar tuner for years and I've been hassled for it the whole time.
Pops can rip! How cool is that 😎✌
Yeah not bad for 65 years old! Wait until you see the next couple of videos in this little series!
the timing belt on my ducati is tensioned to 98db I can confirm this is an effective way to torque oddball stuff. oh yeah and theres an app called Guitar Tuna that i use to do it.
Ducatis make all sorts of fun noises...especially their dry clutch engines and Desmodromic valves!
With a cheap clip on guitar tuner you could probably dial it in pretty easily and quickly
That's exactly what I use, I'm not always able to pick out different tones. Once you do it a couple of times on the same bike you'll be able to set the scale and then you can get it exactly right.
You should wear your motocross boots doing that snake retrieval !
Great idea!
what soap solution do you use?
Meguiar's Gold Class soap and about 2oz soap to 5 gallon bucket!
Cool looking place to ride!
For sure! Ironwood Forest...West of Tucson. Lots of fun 2-track type trails.
It’s funny how our big ADV bikes would be STRUGGLING on those trails.
I actually have an ADV Bike Sand Riding video planned...it will be an instruction video focused on technique and how you can wrestle them big girls into submission!
"That came up way faster than expected" (read: ouch...my balls)
Did you find out more info on that stalling issue? That must be a "fun" surprise when it happen.
That rattle is the snake equivalent of giving you the middle finger as he's slitherin away lol. Nice work!
Cool shot at 6:30!
You pissing on marigolds at 52:15 there bud 😀
Haha I snuck that it and you're the first to comment!
Good save !!! Please do not get hurt before my visit !!!
I could still ride faster than you while hurt don't worry!
It was really overgrown out there. Wish I had made it but unfortunately life gets in the way.
