- Video to accompany song from Nic Jones' album Noah's Ark Trap
Oh the sky was dark and the night advanced
When a convict came to the Isle of France
And around his leg was a ring and chain
And his country was of the shamrock green.
"Oh I'm from the Shamrock", this convict cried
"That has been tossed on the ocean wide".
"For being unruly, I do declare"
"I was doomed to transport these seven long years".
"When six of them they were up and passed"
"I was coming home to make up the last"
"When the winds did blow and the seas did roar"
"They cast me here on this foreign shore".
So then the coastguard he played a part
And with brandy he cheered the convicts heart
Although the night it is far advanced
You shall find a friend on the Isle of France.
So he sent a letter all to the queen
Concerning the wreck of the Shamrock Green
And his freedom came by a speedy post
For the absent convict they thought was lost.
"God bless the coastguard", this convict cried
"For he saved my life from the ocean wide"
"And I'll drink his health in a flowing glass"
"And he's to success to the Isle of France".
Song is titled 'Isle Of France' on the 1978 recording.

Nic's mastery of guitar coupled with that warm expressive voice. Oh my. My favorite album of his from an career tragically cut short.
My Mother would sing this to me when I was a tiny child. I've sung it to myself throughout my life. I'm 72 yrs now. 😘
How sad and what an injustice that there only 13 comments for this exquisite song sung by the incomparable Nic Jones. His mastery of the guitar coupled with the most expressive voice made him such a treasure.
Perhaps my favourite track from the best album of all time. I was fortunate enough to see Nic live in the late 70's and his music has been a constant companion ever since. Simply gorgeous.
"The Noah's Ark Trap" was one of the best LPs of 1977, and an all-time fave-rave of mine. I still have my original vinyl, and so wish that there could be a Remastered with extra tracks" CD reissue, but - as you all may know - the title is no longer available. Certainly a contender for the best folk LP of all time. This is such a gloriously gorgeous song.
Such a beautiful voice
The talented Mr Jones ….this song has been a good friend to me for many , many years .Sung and played beautifully here by a folk legend ….
He uses his own kind of vocal ornamentation . Really adds pathos to the music. Masterful.
Nic Jones, WonderFull
His voice sails right into the heart...the same truth, the sincere humane voice, in sympathy with the lot of man.
Saw him for the first time at the Loughborough Folk Festival in 1972 on the Saturday morning.Probably as well that I didn’t see him on the Friday evening as I wouldn’t have seen many of the other marvellous performers that were on that w/e.
