The Troop - On the spotlight (Pre The Sweet 1960's featuring Brian Connolly) (Ultra Rare)

  • This band definitely includes Brian Connolly, & also predates his first known band "Wainwright's Gentlemen". This acetate is an EP and has two tracks per side. All the tracks are credited as being written by "McManus, Eldridge". Brian Connolly's original surname was "McManus". He was fostered, aged 2, by a couple with the surname McManus. He changed his surname to "Connolly" when he discovered that he was fostered. His birth mother's surname was Connolly.
Interestingly one track, "On The Spotlight", is exactly the same track as "Spotlight", which features on "The Sweet's" debut LP "Funny How Sweet Co-Co Can Be". On this LP the track is credited as being written by "Connolly, Priest, Scott, Tucker". i.e., all four members of The Sweet.

About 6 years ago we acquired a record collection that included a handful of original 1960’s acetates. We kept the acetates back because there were some very interesting items, & there was a lot of research to be done. We have now decided to sell these acetates.
The most interesting acetate is an undocumented early release from the future “The Sweet” lead vocalist Brian Connolly. The band is called “The Troop”. I cannot find any mention of this band on any “Sweet” website. Therefore this is a really important discovery!

@Ger Bee Sweet still does exist, but this is referring to the band's different sound. I think when he says he misses the band, I think he's saying he misses that 60s sound that no longer exists in Sweet.

@@pejoha While this might be a demo, it wasn't played by a band named The Troop with these four members. Brian wrote the song with with guitarist Chris Eldridge (not depicted in this photo).
The Troop did not change their name to Sweetshop. Brian and Mick were with Wainwright’s Gentlemen prior to forming Sweetshop. That's Frank Torpey in that pic, the first lead guitarist for Sweet and he said they never had a band called the Troop.

@@pejoha Yes. I've seen this link. The lineup featured Brian, Chris Eldridge and Lee Mordecai (guitars), Mark Conway (bass) and Martin Lass (drums). If the limited info found online is accurate that is.
You're correct in saying there's limited info out there. And it makes sense that it wouldn't be on Sweet's website, especially since Andy didn't even know Brian in "65 and is the one promoting The Sweet name today.
Generation X was the band in question according to Michael's Sweet book. He's covered those lads from birth to post Sweet.
I did have an opportunity to ask Frank (who's in the photo) if he knew anything about The Troop and one of the tracks mentioned and he knew nothing about it.
