A couple of years ago I covered Running Hell for the Side-Quests 3 album, and I've seen many of you requesting more Cave Story songs since.
There are certainly plenty of great ones out there, and today I'm bringing you this arrangement of the main theme, which you may also know as Plantation (the area it also plays on) or simply self-titled as Cave Story.
When I was listening to this song before working on it, I noticed a very strong call-and-response style in the melody (originally two different synth sounds), so I thought this would be a cool song to do a collaboration with. So I called up our newest GaMetal Dream Friend, yell0, to join me in a Guitar and Synth duet style arrangement.

Annual reminder that Notch decided to get into game development because Cave Story proved to him that the resources for average people to make games were finally available.
Minecraft owes its existence to Cave Story, DIRECTLY.
Undertale too! Pretty much the entire indie scene's existence is owed to Cave Story, and I think that's pretty cool

@@Vyloka Semi-unrelated but Homestuck is like the non-video game version of this.
So many modern animated cartoons (and also Undertale too), can trace inspiration back to it.
Case in point, Adventure Time.
We know for a fact that there were Homestuck fans amongst the writing team, there's this one image where you can see someone doodled one of the characters on the whiteboard in the writing room, and there are a couple nods to it within the earlier seasons that you can catch if you're familiar.
Also, Steven Universe, Rebecca Sugar was probably the one responsible for that aforementioned doodle.
Genuinely one of the most important games of all time, defined the Indie genre and inspired so many games, notably Undertale.
Cave Story and Touhou are the defacto hallmarks of indie games. The former definitely doesn't get enough credit.
Plus, it's one of the few games that can claim to be genuinely made by a single person. Even in the case of Undertale, there was some collaboration for parts of the artwork - Cave Story's developer didn't only make all the art himself, but he even built his own game engine from scratch.
The Granddaddy, if not outright KING of Indie Games, Cave Story. While Daisuke Amaya, AKA Pixel, didn't completely make the game on his own (he had some testers to give him feedback, among others), his story of doing the graphics, the gameplay, the music, and everything else that made Cave Story what it is mostly on his own is an incredible tale, and it helped motivate other potential indie developers to make their own dream projects. The music is an especially interesting part of this story, since Pixel does not appear to have a history in musical composition and just made music that sounded good to him. Needless to say, I think many of us also found the music to be good as well!
Y'know, Touhou is somewhat the queen of indie games, technically. But yeah, Cave Story is so storied (No pun intended) for a good reason!
Shame that Nicalis seems to milk Cave Story behind Pixel's back, though.
Ya, I'd definitely say Cave Story started the indie renaissance.

I remember playing this shortly after the first English version became available.
Had trouble getting it to run at first, so i just emailed Pixel to ask for help.
He replied and I'll never forget what he said to me:
"I'm sorry i don't speak English"

There's a rumor about this song that I haven't been able to confirm, but I heard that the song subtlely becomes desynced every few loops so that it sounds really weird after a longlong time.
I've never caught that in game, but it sounds believable cuz I did notice that downloading the songs from the freeware version and trying to pinpoint an exact tempo to them doesn't work because at some point they get slightly desynced from said bpm no matter what, even without looping. I think it might have something to do with the fact that the audio engine and the daw/synthesizer made to make the songs is all coded by Pixel himself, so the play speed might not be 1:1 perfect

Such a funky track. It feels like a dance between the guitar and keyboard, with uplifting melodies but with a touch of mystery
I admittedly have never played Cave Story, but I know about its history and how it essentially created the modern indie game, and I have to love it for that. Not to mention, it's got a great OST, and this cover of the main theme was incredible! I have to give credit to both you and yell0, you guys both did amazing on this cover! Loved it and can't wait for more this month!

I'm surprised all the comments are about Pure Furies lol. But yeah, it's a fantastic track and my personal favorite Touhou theme. Part of the reason why is how visceral it is. At a point, the Zunpets kick into full gear, and it makes the track sound almost anguished. Would love it if Jonny got to do that with a guitar wail. Also, Touhou's return to GaMetal is long overdue

I remember playing it sometime before it exploded in popularity, the game had a few fansites, a few AU ideas, quite a few remix albums (including a winter themed one iirc) and I recall reading somewhere that the person who made it was intrested in making a sequel at some point (but we still haven't found out if anything's come from that)
My favorite weapon in the whole game is the Bubbler! Becuase bubbles! 😄
(also becuase a good defense is a good offense)

Cave Story still remains as one of the best games ever, and if anyone's reading this and hasn't played it, go check it out! one thing's for sure, you'll get a LOT more awesome tracks like this one. and Jonny and yell0, awesome cover, your styles go really great together! i definitely wouldn't complain if we got move Cave Story on the channel :D

What the hell, I decided on a whim to watch an entire 100% longplay of Cave Story to see how good it really was considering it came out ages ago, thought it was a pretty good game with a great soundtrack, and then I see this uploaded??? Insane. Great remix!

Honestly, yell0 did such a good job, loved the solo SOOO MUCH! Absolutely killed it on one of my personal favorite games. Which reminds me, I should beat the game again this year.
This game has been a big mark of my childhood, thanks to my dad for showing me this game knowing I would be interest in it.

Could have sworn this theme was also called “Plantation”, though maybe dans just called it that because the main theme also played in the Plantation area. Interesting place to play the main theme of the game, if I’m being honest.
"plantation" all lowercase is the original Japanese name iirc (at least according to the Cave Story+ VGMdb page)

Kartikeya here for day 367. Today was WEIRD. Had a doctors appointment scheduled today, been waiting for like 5 months for it, go in, am told the doctor isn't even on staff today! Was told that they'd contact ME to reschedule, not a single iota has been sent to me. But today was also grocery day! Since I personally have little spare time these days, I do most of my shopping through instacart. But the bizzarre part was that for BOTH orders I received MORE than what I had ordered. From my general order I received 2 additional tubs of watermelon, and from my costco order I received 2 CRATES of gatorade. If I actually received these without having to pay for them AWESOME! This is the first time I've ever received more than what I ordered (instead of someone screwing up the order)
I imagine this will play in front of the game's 26th annual rerelease coming next fall. 😂

I finally played the game for myself about a month ago and it's pretty good! Gave up on the final segment of the true ending but the rest was all very enjoyable, including the music of course. I recommend it to any metroidvania fans out there
