With just days to go to the final of this year's Eurovision Song Contest, Panorama has been undercover inside its hosts Azerbaijan, to discover the extraordinary truth about this secretive country and its approach to the world's most watched non-sporting event.
Reporter Paul Kenyon finds out how the contest has been used as a tool of intimidation: viewers have been interrogated for voting for the nation's long-term enemy, Armenia; a protest singer has been told to flee before Eurovision or he will be thrown in jail; and dozens have had their homes bulldozed to make way for the Eurovision event itself.
The US embassy in Baku has compared the ruling family to the Mafia. The regime has held onto power through a combination of rigged elections, jailing opponents, and by irregular control of the country's vast oil wealth. So, why did the organisers of the world's best well-loved music event agree to host it in Azerbaijan?

Azerbaijan needs a revolution against this family ,I'm from Tunisia,I visited this country in 2014, the people were very nice to us, Baku is a beautiful city but why all these photos of Ilham Aliyev everywhere , I spoke with many Azeri about the political situation , they are aware of what the Ilham Aliyev is doing but they can't say anything unfotunately , my message is we had the same situation in Tunisia , there was any human rights and only one party was ruling the country but thanks god after 2011 everything changed, there is nothing impossible, Aliyev will fall one day and I hope it will be very soon , keep the faith

Yes, Azerbaijan is ruled by corrupted dictatorship, but what the hell is wrong with people that writing comments here. If government bad (as admitted by the majority of Azeris), it doesn't mean that you can talk rude things about country (COUNTRY and government is not the same), call Azerbaijan terrorist state (wtf) and blame its people for dictatorship, that patronized by Russia. Some people even offer exclude Azerbaijan from Eurovision because it's a Muslim state. Lol, Azerbaijan is secular state, it has large proportion of atheist, agnostics and etc.
By the way, if you don't know. Azerbaijan was the first country with muslim majority, that established democratic secular state in 1918. Women was respected as equals to men in their political rights in the same year. For example, the same was in USA in 1920, in Japan in 1950, and in Switzerland in 1970

To be honest Azerbaijan is wonderful country with wonderful people, different nationalities, different religions. In capital city(where I been)you can see Church, Mosque and Synagogue next to each other. The single problem is politics, but I guess they will manage it. At least Azerbaijan is the first Muslim majority country which accept democracy, gave equal rights to women(ask yourself when women start voting in your countries?),in Azerbaijan(ADR)all these was in 1918. Every country have a Dirty Secret im from Canada and i've been to azerbaijan and i think it's amazing yes it's not the best country in the world but it does have potentiaI I always hope to see positive and constructive commentary after social awareness media. I don't know why I expect that. I never see it. At best, I see social criticism which doesn't do anything but restate the problem. At worst I see the most profane insults imaginable direct all over the place: other commenters, races, ethnicities, religions, etc. Total downer that gets us nowhere, except making us believe the world is full of only hateful people. Eh, I just need to remember to skip the comments.

It's disgraceful what has happened to the Eurovision contest since the eastern block and Baltic countries have been let in. I love the idea behind the contest, but until they reform the system this sort of thing will keep happening. The BBC itself is very political in what it covers, but this time I think they performed a much needed service highlighting the abuses.

To add, Ripley classified Europeans into 3 races: (1) teutonic - the northern race, long-skulled, tall in stature, pale hair/skin; (2) mediterranean - the southern race, long-skulled, short/medium in stature, dark hair/skin; (3) alpine - the central race, round-skulled, stocky in stature, intermediate hair/ skin color. Azeris belong to kaspi, the sub-group of (2). As for history, the human kind was blossoming where Azerbaijan is, at the time when North-Western Europe was under the ice.

Instead let's focus on positive things about beautiful country of Azerbaijan...Our enemies are jealous and showing the country in the negative way...The journalist is performing the order and obviously is paid well...
Azerbaijan is a secular and unitary republic. The country features rich and beautiful nature with wildlife. Azerbaijan is a true goldmine for archaeologists..
    .
Excavations held in the cave of Azykh in Garabagh revealed human remnants exceeding 2 million years of age. This unique finding placed Azerbaijan on the map of the most ancient inhabitants of Europe.
Azerbaijan is also known for its deeply rooted history of science and education. The State University of Baku, established in 1919, and the institutes of the Academy of Sciences, played a significant role in promoting science, education and culture in Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan is a country of ancient culture Azerbaijani carpets are world-famous. Some outstanding pieces of this art are currently cherished in the world's leading museums like Victoria & Albert (London), Textile Museum (Washington DC), Louvre (Paris), Topkapy (Istanbul), and Hermitage (St.Petersburg).
Deeply rooted music traditions are another feature of Azerbaijan. The tambourine stone (qavaldash) in the historic and archaeological site of Gobustan is the oldest musical instrument discovered in the country.
The art of mugham, being an inseparable part of Azerbaijan's musical legacy is included in UNESCO's World Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
In the meantime, Azerbaijan is recognised as one of the cradles of classic music in the Orient with the first national opera (Uzeyir Hajibeyli's Leyli & Majnun) staged in 1908.
Besides this, the outstanding Azerbaijani opera singer Shovket Mammadova was the first Muslim woman who appeared on stage in April 1912. This was followed by the first ballet in the Muslim world (Afrasiyab Badalbeyli's Maiden Tower) in 1940.
Azerbaijani cuisine is rich and versatile. Each region has its own variety of main national dishes.
While bread, meat and poultry feature prominently in all the food preparations, the national cuisine offers lots of choices for vegetarians and for people who prefer seafood.
Azerbaijani black tea is an indispensable element of the national cuisine served with a special ceremony.
First state formations on the territory of Azerbaijan date back to the 3rd Millennium B.C. However, the first independent state - Manna - was established in the 9th century B.C.
In the 4th century B.C., the fall of the empire of Alexander the Great resulted in formation of Atropatena in south Azerbaijan and Caucasian Albania in the north. The origin of the name Azerbaijan is assumed to be linked to the name of Atropatena. At that time local population worshipped fire.
In the 4th-5th centuries Christianity became the main religion in the mountainous regions of Caucasian Albania. A Christian church built in the 5th century in the village of Kish near the city of Sheki has survived till modern day.
The 52 letter alphabet developed in Caucasian Albania greatly fostered the development of education in the area.
In the middle of the 7th century the Arab conquest of Azerbaijan made Islam the main religion of the population. In the 20s-30s of the 9th century national liberation movement headed by Babek sped up the fall of the Arab caliphate.
Following the collapse of the caliphate, feudal states of Sajis, Salaries, Shirvanshahs, Ravvadids, and Shaddadids sprang up on the territory of Azerbaijan. In the 12th and 13th centuries the territory of Azerbaijan was under control of the Eldaniz (Atabeys) and in the 14th and 15th centuries - Qaragoyunlu and Aggoyunlu states.
In the 16th and 17th centuries the state of Sefevis left an important mark in the history of Azerbaijani statehood. The boundaries of the state spread to the rivers Amu Darya, Syr Darya, Euphrates and Tigris and to modern Georgia.
In the 18th and 19th centuries struggle over Azerbaijan between Russia and Iran was intensified. The Gulustan Treaty (1813) and the Turkmanchay Treaty (1828) divided the 18th century independent Azerbaijani khanates between Russia and Iran.
Thus, the territory of Azerbaijan was split into two parts creating Northern Azerbaijan and Southern Azerbaijan. In the second half of the 19th century and in the beginning of the 20th century Baku produced almost 51% of the world's oil and 95% of Russia's oil.
Speaking of technical accomplishments of the country, one should notice the first oil tanker in the world, Zoroaster, built and brought to Baku in 1879 by the Nobel brothers.
The first Republic of Azerbaijan established in 1918 became the first secular republic in the Moslem East. For the first time in history the Republic of Azerbaijan announced equal voting rights among men and women.
Despite only twenty-three months of its existence since 1918 to 1920, the first republic left a great legacy for the modern state.
Since 1920 to 1991 Azerbaijan was part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). In spite of tough years following the regaining of independence in 1991, the Republic of Azerbaijan has recently gained a number of serious economic and cultural achievements.
In 2008 the World Bank declared Azerbaijan one of the top ten developing countries of the world. Azerbaijanis are very proud of their developing democracy...

Yes, let's ignore all of the bad things in the world. Because clearly none of these bad things matter at all and should never even be mentioned, let alone changed. And if anyone does want them changed they are wrong because reasons that are too complicated to worry about so don't or else. :V

Sema Hseyn The development of Azerbaijani democracy stopped a long time ago. And azerbaijan might be a republic in name, but if, when the president dies, a member of his family takes over, which is looking very likely, then it will effectively be a monarchy.

Azeris were not driven out of Armenia in 1987 and that is complete garbage. My family was living there at the time, and witnessed no acts of aggression against Azeris whatsoever. The only reason why the Azerbaijani population of Armenia dwindled is because they feared that we would come after them the way you were coming after us.

From the open petition on the White House site:
In 1914-22, the armed groups of Armenian Dashnak and Hunchak parties and the Armenian volunteers serving in the Russian, Greek and French armies carried out a systematic extermination of Turks, Azerbaijanis and Kurds in Anatolia and the Caucasus.
523.955 Muslim civilians were identified as victims, not including those missing or buried in mass graves. Western scholars estimated that overall up to 2.5 million Muslims perished in these massacres.

it is true what you say, but after collapsing of the USSR, some handmade borders (like Slovak and Cechy) and Kosovo (not easy one) were changed. The Karabakh issue is perfectly comparable with Kosovo . These were the Nations decision following with pogroms from Azeri side (Serbia). then War and refugees on the both sides. Handmade borders without justice for the Nations, has a limited time life. Specially with a dictatorial governments like Aliev and Co.

Azer have been part of the Mongol, Persian, Timur, Seljuks, and Ottoman ASIAN Empires for the last 1500+ years. Where has Azer been distinctly Euro? Geographically it IS NOT IN EUROPE and is as European as Iran and Kazahkstan= ASIAN. You guys are Asian or Euro want-a-be's

You can go round and round, but it does not change the fact: the conflict was initiated by armenians, the most atrocious killings took place in Khodjaly. The fact is that ~1 million azeris were driven out of their homes, 30,000 were killed so that 120,000 armenians can declare Nagorno Karabakh as an independent state, which was never recognized as such.
