    The problems you mentioned with focusing exist because of the specification of this particular Canon branded focal reducer. It's also a problem with other focal reducers like the Viltrox MFT-EF, the Kipon Fuji X to EF and many more that were not designed with vintage lenses in mind. The actual glass might actually touch with the focal reducer's glass so caution is recommended. All actual EF lenses (that is lenses that were originally made for the EF mount and not adapted) obey a specific specification on where the lens back element should clear to prevent collision with the mirror found in cameras of the EF era. Different systems though had different clearances in the specification - that's why some of those lenses hit this focal reducer that was made to the EF specification. This by the way does not have to do anything with the pins of the lenses on the back - an entirely different situation. You won't be having any of those problems with the Metabones RF to EF Speedbooster 0.71x as Metabones has been making those with extra clearance since they know people adapt vintage lenses to EF. The quality is the usual well used and trusted latest 0.71 version from Metabones. A comparison between the Canon and the Metabones would be nice.

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  3 роки тому +1

      those back pins are making contact, that i believe is the issue. Simply beacuse they're made specifically for Canon EF lenses and not adapted ones. I figured this wouldn't be a problem with all focal reducers and if one came out that didn't have those electrical points it would be fine.
      The 21 and 35 really dn't need to be reduced so for me it works, but ust something to consider for others who might want to do the same and are looking at this adapter.

      Hello! So glad I found your comment! I have a set of Contax Zeiss I wanted to use with my Komodo (25 2.8, 28 2.0, 35 1.4, 50 1.4 and 85 1.4). Got the Canon Adapter and my 28mm and 35mm wouldn't reach infinite focus (my favorite ones!), they stop at 2m mark approx. Have you tested the Metabones RF to EF with those lenses?! I believe a CINE version now, positive lock EF mount. Any chance you know if this one works too? Thank you so much for all this info and your time, you're a live saver!!!

    I own a m42 to FX speedbooster and i'm really, really happy with it. You are right, you can find issues, like loosing the infinity, but modifying old lenses is really funny, and it's not so difficult to modify the infinity if you know what you are doing. For me, it's absolutely a must, since I can use "full frame mode" with my old lenses, and get the full potential of the aps-c sensor with the new ones. Really cool stuff on my opinion!!

    I routinely use FF lenses on S35 sensors. For me the S35 'output' is (and will likely stay as) the standard for years to come in many aspects of film making. As you outlined, the only major drawback is the reduced focal length, but as you said, this can achieve great results, particularly for detailed shots (zoom or macro). Personally I haven't used the Canon speedbooster, but my experience with a Metabones equivalent is much the same. They are great when they work well, but if there is an issue, it can be detrimental to the filming. For example, I placed my camera on the ground (with handles and VCT keeping the camera body and lens away from the ground). When I picked it up again the speedbooster lost the ability to change Fstops electronically. The damn thing is too sensitive (at times). I do love that I can turn a f2.8 lens into a f2 and so on with a speedbooster. A nifty 50 coupled with speed booster is pretty awesome too.
    Ace video btw, loved the visuals and sound design - and that slate is still awesome. I wonder if others have picked up on it. Keep it up mate, amazing result.

    Lovely footage, I've been using vintage lenses for years with a Metabones Ultra speedbooster (also x 0.71 focal reduction) on my GH4. A Canon C70 or Z-cam E2-S6 will be my next camera as I love the S35 look with full frame glass... This gives me a x1.63 equivalent field of view on a GH4 with full frame glass and speedbooster. FYI Nikon AI-S lenses adapt well: I have the 50mm f1.4, 85mm f1.4 (my favourite) and 135mm f2.8 which all work perfectly without any problem. The 28mm f2.8, however, has a sticky-outy bit of metal that fouls the metabones casing and so I had to chop it off with a Dremmel... I suspect the same would be true for the Canon speedbooster... worth doing though if you like the Nikkor lenses... the vintage lens look is lovely, and frankly I use these lenses far more than my Sigma Art zooms because they look so good and they are so light and small by comparison! The other advantage is that they have hard stops on the focus ring, which makes auto-calibraion much, much easier (and more accurate) on my Tilta Nucleus Nano focus motor. For a more extreme wide angle I use a Laowa 12mm f2.8 zero-distortion lens that matches nicely with the Nikkors: it's a lovely, great value lens, but you need the Laowa filter holder and square/rectangular filters for your NDs, which means more gear to carry... the Nikkor 28, 50 and 135mm lenses are all 52mm filter threads, but the 85 is a 72mm thread - so my Variable ND is an 82mm one allowing me to use it with stepup rings on any of my lenses (I actually have a 72mm VND as well to save time/hassle when swapping lenses).

  • @romain_do

    do you think the infinity focus issue might be related to the number of elements present in the lens? the 28mm does not have infinity focus issues whereas the 35 does.. 28mm has 7 elements (and the 50 and 85) and 35 has 9. Idk im just guessing at that point haha.

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  2 роки тому +1

      No it’s got to do with how far back the lens design goes, so might be elements but more the physical space clearance at the back of the lens relative to those metal pins. If those pins were gone likely no contact

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  3 роки тому

      I haven’t no, this is my first simply because I’m fine with a crop when I shoot s35. There must be a calculator type thjng online but I don’t work in FOC degrees typically, math can solve it for sure.
      At the end I show the Contax 50 reduced vs not reduced on the s35. You can see the frame side comparison, but not sure how that translates into actual degrees simply because I’m visual. I think more in FF focal length numbers as welI know there is a way though.
      Will look into it

  • @adriancrespo4274

    Great video! It’s a shame that the adaptor isn’t sitting well with some lenses, I’ve recently gotten into using focal reducers on my XT3, I was really worried about a drop in quality/distortion, and there is a bit but overall it’s been a great experience, also it might just be that brand of focal reducer that’s giving you trouble, or maybe on RF the glass needs to be positioned differently? I’ve been using my smc takumar 50 f/1.4 for a while now with 0 problems.... maybe something to look into?

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  3 роки тому

      Ya same, but the glass is good science. Ya it's those contact pins that give electrical control to EF lenses that's doing it, barely any room back there for some glass, not a QC issue for them because they don't test them on adapted lenses I suspect.

    You mentioned that your Leica R vintage lenses gave you a full range and did not hinder you from achieving affinity focus. Is that correct? I just bought a komodo and I also own a set of contax zeiss primes so not hitting affinity with the wider focal lengths is a tough pill to swallow. I use the 25 and 35 alot so 🤷🏼‍♂️ maybe I look at the Leica R's or a new set of primes. Thoughts?

      @@MarkHoltze It seams you took me wrong. I have proved with my many times liking , subscriptions and admiring comments that I am a follower of most of your videos. Plus you have helped me many times on my decisions and problems. What I meant is DO NOT WATCH THE ADV VIDEO , and not "Do Not watch Mark's Video". Truth is that every time I tried to skip the ADV I was taken to another you tube video and I had to start all over again. Certainly I did not intend to undermine your wonderful work and that is why I write that openly. Thank you for expressing your feelings.

    I have been using a Metabones 0.71 Speed booster C/Y to Fuji X for my old CONTAX C/Y lenses on my X-H1 for the last year. Although initially getting poor results due to pilot error. Now I am getting incredibly sharp images edge to edge. I have not invested in any Fuji Lenses, as I believe the quality I get with my old fast 35mm lenses with the extra stop (inc. reduced depth of field) exceeds current lenses. An 85mm F1.4 CONTAX Zeiss = 60mm F1.0

    The Komodo being S35 is the only reason it does nothing for me. Ever since 1917 and playing with FF video I'm hooked.

      Those films would turn anybody to the FF side no doubt, they are sensor spoilers 😂
      Your Nonna film was pure emotion, I didn’t care what you shot it on (was beautiful) but it was the pure emotion of it. Being able to totally relate to the subject matter as well. I don’t know your family at all but I felt like i did there.
      The trick to good story telling and doc producing really, you nailed it. Sorry I had to add that to what I said on Twitter already

    images are awesome mate well done, i m a firm believer that crop sensors are fine for video, but photos i would say def better with full frame.

    Mark, I agree you don’t need a full frame lens, it’s about understanding focal lens and adapting well that’s my humble view anyway

    Oh my gosh. Some amazing shots in there! The bloom in the forest, the texture on the leather seat. I tip my hat to you good sir. 🎩 To answer the question, I love the look of vintage lenses on super 35. I’m hunting for more Canon FDs now.

      Yea the Komodo has brilliant highlight roll off and that 21 CZ MMJ is worth it’s weight in gold. The FD’s are bangers as well.

    Really enjoyed this video Mark, it was very useful, as I have my Komodo on order and am researching lenses and accessories like crazy before it arrives. The use of vintage glass is alluring, thanks, in part, to your channel. Not sure I feel the need a FF adaptor at this stage, but it's certainly worth knowing about so thanks for making this video 🙂 Cheers!

      I'm not sure how much I'll even use it to be honest, I bought the Komodo in part to use with these lenses because I already love the crop on the lenses. Been using them on my C100 mark ii for years. Just select the appropriate focal length to get the FOV you want. The 60fps is the biggest advantage to using it and likely the only time i'll pt it on. I do have the S1H (FF) so not like that camera is going to sleep anytime soon.
      When do you expect shipment? Did you order directly from RED? I got the 0.71 1/2 off from Vistek in Toronto, saw it and had to get it mainly for curiosity sake.

    • @SimonBurnCreative
      @SimonBurnCreative 3 роки тому +1

      @@MarkHoltze Useful to know, thanks. It was the 60fps that caught my eye too. I was talking directly with RED and they came across as pushy, so I went to Vistek in the end. It was actually cheaper and far less hassle! That was a month or so back, shipment expected by end of October. I'm still no further along with figuring out what to buy for it, although the DZOFilm primes look interesting, supposedly with a hint of vintage aesthetic to them, and amazing focus breathing.

      @@SimonBurnCreative Ya I went with RED only because I had a 14 week wait and didn't have to put any money down which was nice. Going in and dealing with an actual sales team member is the best experience for sure, but didn't love the 2k down and had no real estimate (16 weeks) was the best they could give me.
      DZO's look decent, I'm looking at their Parfocal zooms, although I hate that they're twice the price now than they were 14 months ago, you could get the set for like under 3K USD, now 2400 for one and 2600 for the other.
      Def have a vintage vibe to them and am in the market for zooms specifically. Primes i'm pretty much covered.
      Good luck mate!

    Having no crop in 4K video at any framerate is a huge selling point for modern cameras imho. And as we can ready see its easily possible in the latest gear.
    That said what are you thoughts on Canons RF mount regarding adapting vintage lenses. Mby you could do a video about that. Or does it end with RF to EF to Vintage adapter combo?

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  3 роки тому +1

      RF is great for vintage lens adapting, like the E and L mounts it can pretty much adapt anything and everything which is great. I don't mind the 4k 60 as i rarely shoot higher than 24, maybe some stuff at 30 which i'll slow down to a more dreamy pace, but 60 is too slow for the majority of my narrative/doc work.
      4k crop on a 6k sensor isn't too bad either, just need to work with those limitations and this adapter opens that up a bit more for those who do shoot at 60 often! :)

Wish i had a FF Nikon body to play with it digitally. That said you and Mathieu Stern are truly awesome sources for inspiration! Cheers

    Own a a Komodo and a set of Leica R's. Using vintage lenses means you want the imperfections that make them unique. These imperfections are mostly on the edges of the lens. When using FF lens on a crop camera you loose that. Having used my 28 Elmarit on a Leica SL for a long time and it's a magic thing. On the Komodo, the same lens cropped to super 35, it's not. So imo yes, FF coverage totally makes sense when using vintage FF lenses. Plus you don't find good wide lenses easily, so cropping on them it's not ideal either. Cheers!
