- With remains of snow in some areas, LMS Royal Scot Class No. 46115 Scots Guardsman headed south as she took charge of Railway Touring Companies "Stratford Flyer" from Manchester to Stratford-upon-Avon.
This was the first time I would properly film the Scot, having only seen it once, briefly, on the S&C last year, so I was more than looking forward to filming this run once it was confirmed she was hauling it.
The outward run is seen at Spring Road as Scots Guardsman powers her train away from Tyseley as she nears the end of her outward journey, making a nice soundtrack in the process. Once at Stratford, the Class 47 at the rear would tow the train to Hatton, before 46115 would haul it to Dorrige for servicing, and we see this movement at Lapworth. This came after a rather long wait, as an apparent SPAD incident at Stratford caused the ECS to leave nearly an hour down.
With a planned hour wait at Stratford upon the ECS's return from Dorridge, the delays would have little impact on the charter leaving on time. For my final location of the day I headed to Wilmcote to capture 46115 climbing the 1 in 75 bank. I managed to arrive before the ECS had returned from Dorridge, so we firstly see the Class 47 hauling the train back where the promised rain had finally made an appearance.
A quick turnaround saw the train leave Stratford only 6 down. Unfortunately, it wasn't quick enough to prevent a service train drowning out the sound of the Scot, and given the weather conditions she was given some expected assistance, but this didn't prevent her from making some brilliant smoke effects as she began her journey back to Manchester.
It was good to finally film this machine in a proper manner, and I hope I'll be able to catch it again in the near future!

Fantastic shots Thomas. Glad it was 46115 for you. At least there was still small bits of snow too. Regards Daniel
Thanks Daniel. Thomas
That is some magnificent footage you've got there Thomas, a very eventful day all rounds by the sounds of it!
I see you managed to get a cracking shot of 46115's run through Wilmcote on the return; I'd positioned myself down the end of the opposite platform, so had that bloody DMU pull out in front of me as the Scot approached. Talk about Sod's law at it's finest!🙄🤣
Fortunately I was still able to get a worthwhile film out of it, so all's well that ends well.
All the best,
Adam 🙂
Thanks Adam. It was a pity that DMU drowned dout the scot (and nearly ruined your shot in the process) but it can't be helped. Was still good to see the loco properly. Thomas
Excellent footage Thomas. In my experience, Royal Scot's make a great noise when they've got a heavy load behind them. When they've got a light load they make a Bulleid pacific sound noisy.
Cheers Callum. She certainly sounded good! Thomas
