Cool video. I think one really important aspect that wasn't mentioned is how much automation is going on in his mixes; almost all of the compressors were not operating in static manner.
I first heard his work on Mansun's Attack Of The Grey Lantern. Very very impressive. I didnt know that he was involved in the Mission's Children album with JPJ....
I've been a fan of Mike Stent ever since I heard Achtung Baby. It's great to have an insight into how he works a track...and particularly refreshing to see a well established professional being a bit more care free than others that confuse the process too much. Thanks for the upload.
Thank you! It was great to do a bit of a hommage to Spike, its incredible how many great albums/songs he's been involved with, across so many different genre's as well!
Awesome video. One things confusing me tho. Those "sub groups" are they pararell groups or normal "groups" I havent used pro tools in years. There is a vid on where he shows a song that he mixed and the group was a pararell i guess.. since he turned the group on and off while playing and the drums were still there
Thank you Niko! The groups I have here are normal groups but the drums are separated into initial sub groups as well, (Kick, Snare, rest of drums). I'm sure it would differ slightly mix to mix and he could definitely separate into pararell's as well.
I think we all can only guess on the real technique and approach of Spike Tent, because there is no actual masterclasses of this guy, whatever free or paid, he is not that pretender or "famous engineer" who built his business on releasing teaching videos on different platforms
I love it when they say analog is outdated, how he uses only one type of plugins, how KRK are almost industry standard :) Soon we won't need mics to capture sounds, ohh, preamps are digital for years now. What they did here is selling and not reviewing mixing style of great audio engineer.

Dan Lanois/Flood/Steve Lillywhite mixed AB. Spike didn't come in until POP.
It's insane that this is here
4:47 vocal mix

No sponsors yet, I'd take it though!
