    The politics & ego thing in management irritates me beyond words... I guess the older I get the less it matters or impresses me. We are all human & we all have jobs that work together to make the business successful. Humility is always the correct path. Love your videos, Ms Rosie! Take care & be safe.

    My neighbour down my street is native French. She is a seamstress and is an expert in tambour embroidery. She has a talent and a gift to create what is wanted and needed in haute couture. She did a test for impromptu design and both Chanel and Louis Vuitton wanted her. She chose Chanel and worked closely with the design team headed by Karl Lagerfeld. This is what dreams are made of!!! She and I have become close and she decided to teach me the basics of tambour. She then became full French mistress. It’s no joke, the harsh criticism comes out and for very good reason. They want you to strive for excellence at every level. And most importantly be aware of your actions and the impact it has on the final outcome. The harsh criticism also was unleashed on my lack lustre French. Hahaha I won’t let it discourage me. But, yes it hurt and I avoided my friend for a week. PS. I loved hearing your experiences. I think your career is inspiring and really influential. Most especially on me ❤️❤️

    You met the high level of French snobisme. At the same time congrats and bon courage.

    I love many aspects of French culture but the hierarchical, old school traditions of business culture simply do not resonate. As a Canadian entrepreneur heavily influenced by American business culture, and a part-owner of a staffing firm, the idea that you are not allowed to reach out to anyone you please unless you have 'permission' is just silly. The person you reached out to may not have time or inclination to reach back. But it's not 'wrong' to ask!

  • @FilippaSkog

    This is by far your best video yet. Extremely captivating and interesting while still staying respectful to your former employer. You're such an amazing person, it doesn't surprise me at all that you landed that sort of internship. I can totally relate to the feeling of being the odd one out in fancy, corporate settings at that age. As a 20-25 year old you feel very grownup until you're thrown into the real world and realise you're just a wee baby in many ways. It's such an important learning experience though and was clearly very character building for you since you're so very professional yet personal and humble now. Putting peoples' e-mail adress in hierarchal order has never even crossed my mind but is something I'll remember (though I'm in and from Sweden, where culture's very different from France). It's a bit silly, and you shouldn't have been scolded for it, but I do love the sense of detail of the French.

As you said, everyone is there through their network or family, so there are probably a lot of untold rules in this sector. I'm part of a CAC40 company as well but it's really chill, t-shirt and jeans everyday, no problem with hierarchy in the emails for example haha (btw our HR are pretty bad at scoping their emails.. These days the company has really high standards and expectations. They prefer multilingual candidates (Especially in French and English but, bear in mind there is American English, and the British form of English. Verbage/expressions and spelling are different, and you need to be well versed in both aspects). You need to really respect French culture, even if you have differing opinions. Some subjects are taboo. Respect for chain of command is important, and like she said, many interns/employees come from prominent families. It's kind of, who you know well, and how well they know you will represent their brands, honestly because you do wear it, and can wear it like a brand representative. Also, where you attended university and a master's degree in related fields in the luxury business industry are key. It's so highly competitive, some people will move on to other areas of business. If you pursue it, you have to be pretty thick skinned. It's not glamorous until you start reaching the levels of hierarchy that are.

    I relate to a lot of this, though I worked in a medium sized French company not a giant. My work was critiqued to the point of frustration when I felt I did exactly what my manager asked for. Also, the hierarchy thing. My husband, who is French, often tells me about the drama with writing emails. He's at an upper management position, but he still has to go through his boss to talk to his bosses boss, and the emails he sends must have his manager in copy. It's more formal than the companies I've worked for in the US !

I wrote an email to HR, never got a response, however i received a call from my regional manager. She yelled at me like at a child for surpassing hierarchy. She said i couldn't contact HR (!) directly! And that email has never been answered by HR.

    I think you landed on the most "snobbish" part of LVMH because you basically cumulated HR + Paris + contacts with the highest hierarchy. My personal experience working at MH in Champagne is enterely different as I was in R&D and in Reims which is a smaller city. People really had the same comitment to perfection and luxury but from what I hear the working environment was drastically different. I could dress however I wanted, people were really natural and open minded and even if I was mainly working with oenologists I never really had any issues with egos or "political" things. Anyway my point is it could be more linked to Paris and your field of work than LVMH. In fact I think many people in France who work at Big companies in Paris could relate to your story :)

    Yikes... as someone who has worked in Europe and the U.S. some of these experiences you had as an intern sound like a complete waste of company time. The email hierarchy... come on... that's just asinine. If you have time to look at that then there are bigger issues at hand.

      @@flowerchild2657 Yes, it exists! The only thing is that you have to be quick. If they open your email before you could delete it, then it'll be too late. It saved me a bunch of times though. I mostly use Outlook at the office but my personal mailbox is under Gmail. I believe a similar option exists in Gmail but I never had to use it. Oh my lord this is why I left France in the first place. nothing has changed in all those years. It is still the aunt and the family member and the name that counts regardless of what you can do. I hated that hierarchical and butted head so much I realised early on that I had an Anglo-Saxon attitude I am so unable to give praise the first thing I see is mistakes and I want them corrected now I had to learn to praise others when they do a good job. I miss the arguing thing Anglo saxons are so bad at it and cave in so quickly then you need to say it is not about you it is about the work so so many memories

      Yes, but that may be why two very large global companies are run and owned by a single family (Arnault for LVMH, Bettencourt for L'OREAL, Mulliez Family for AUchan, Decathlon, Leroy-Merlin) and not owned by pension funds that have absolutely nothing to do with their employees or their reputation but only of the dividends that they will have to redistribute to the shareholders.

    • @unrulycrow6299
      @unrulycrow6299 5 років тому +3

      That's called hierarchy in a company, it has nothing to do with the motto of the country.

    • @KimberlyGreen
      @KimberlyGreen 5 років тому +2

      @@unrulycrow6299 You're wrong. It has quite a lot to do with the motto of the country. The motto is a direct outcome of the French Revolution and the ideas of communism that were starting to take shape as a political doctrine at that time. The French people revolted against another restrictive hierarchy which limited their liberty and stratified their nation into non-egalitarian segments, with a hyper-elite, hyper-wealthy small group (nobility) at it's pinnacle. Thus, the irony is that, in that very same society that gave birth to that motto, there is now a different set of hyper-elite, hyper-wealthy people (global capitalists) running a massive conglomerate where part of the corporate culture is stratified, non-egalitarian and restrictive in nature.
      Side note: The word communism derives from the French word commun, which means common. As in, things held in common by the people for the benefit of all in an egalitarian manner. (You'll get no argument from me that real-world implementations of communism radically differ from the theoretical concepts.)
