Overnight Local Bus Ride in India (Sleeper Bus From Mumbai to Goa)

  • We had no idea what to expect on our first overnight local bus ride in India, but it turned out to be quite an adventure! We have been on lots of bus rides around the world, many of them on sleeper busses, but the bus we took from Mumbai to Goa was different to anything we have experienced before! We are always nervous for overnight bus rides because you really never know what you're going to get, and, because this is our first time in India, we really didn't know what to expect!
We had never been on a local bus in India, let alone a sleeper bus! One thing we were really worried about was getting car sick (Nicole gets motion sick very easily) and sure enough, there were some rough times while we traveled from Mumbai to Goa. We had a lot of fun learning about local bus culture in India during our bus journey because we were the only foreigners on the overnight bus! There were lots of local Indian families on the bus with us and seeing the kids run around and be excited for the journey was so sweet. All us adults seemed to be dreading the journey a bit, but the kids we excited to be having an adventure and their happiness was infectious!
You may be wondering why we didn't take the train from Mumbai to Goa, and that is because we waited too long to book the train tickets and there were none left! We were pretty nervous about taking the bus from Mumbai to Goa because we had heard that bus rides in India are dangerous, and that the drivers sometimes go really fast and don't get enough rest, but thankfully we made it to Goa without any issues. From our experience, bus rides in India are quite safe.
If you are wondering what a local bus ride in India is like, this video is perfect for you! We share our experience as foreigners taking a local sleeper but in India for the first time, and chat through all our thoughts and the things we notice along the way. We hope you enjoy!

Bus experience is mostly underwhelming for me here in India, my least favorite mode of transportation for longer journeys. And that's not just cause of the bus itself but the bumpy roads as well. I always prefer trains first, then flights, then taxis and buses only when there's no other choice.

This looks way better than the Greyhound in USA. We once caught a Greyhound from Chicago to Dallas, took 14-hours. As an Aussie I was shocked to discover that the Greyhound was more of a cross-country bus than a 'coach' service. (What I mean by that is that when you book a ticket on a bus in Australia it a) guarantees you a seat, b) they do not stop other than for pre-determined rest stops.) The Greyhound ticket did not guarantee us a seat on the bus, if the bus happened to be full we would have had to wait for the next bus. Secondly, the bus would pull off the interstate (in the middle of the night) drive miles into some country town, pull in to the bus depot (to see if there were any passengers to pickup, which at midnight-2am of course there were none) and then go miles back to the interstate to continue the journey. We were then summarily kicked off the bus at 4am in the morning in the bus depot at Little Rock Arkansas so they could 'clean the bus'. Which meant trying to stay awake in a terrifying bus station so we a) didn't get robbed, and b) tried to be first back on the bus so it didn't leave full or without us! Most awful travel experience of my life...

Oh my goodness what a brutal journey that sounds like! We've never taken the Greyhound in the states and now I think we may try to keep it that way 😂

Namaste Nicole and Mico. A Happy and Prosperous 2023 and it's going that way for you because Bharat (India) is the best country to grow a channel. The Indian people are so welcoming and love to follow Westerners who are showing their country in a good perspective. I know because I was there. 💥💥NICOLE to avoid motion sickness it is a good idea to carry fresh ginger with you and start to chew on it and swallow the juice but not the pulp. Usde it every time you start feeling the motion sickness. Hope you like ginger. Keep growing stronger on UA-cam in India.

Honesttly, you`re lucky picking the right bus company. One of the biggest in India is Paulo Travels. We took it from Hampi to Goa. The driver and staff people are really unfriendly/rude, no blankets, Pillows at all. The AC in the upper bads are so strong that it is way to cold at night. We did't had a toilet, the driver did only one official stop after one hour after we left. The driver drove as a maniac, it was so shaky so we both could't sleep a single minute. AND the bads where to small for me as a 1,86 cm tall guy. They let us out at 6am somewhere we did't expect. Before we useed 3rd class sleeping train which was way better then this bus. I read in all reviews that this bus company is like sh**, 1star un every plattform. Yours seems to be good:)

Unfortunately, many foreigners have preconceived notions about India which are not true.
Some foreigners have been introduced to India through yoga and teachings of Sri Paramhansa and Sri Prabhupada, so they think of India as a spiritual country and are only interested in Rishikesh and Varanasi and don't want to see anything else in India.
Then some foreigners see India as a country with amazing culture, art and architecture so they end up overdoing Rajasthan.
Then some foreigners have read books about India by James Stuart Mill and Katherine Mayo. They have also read news articles about violence against women, Christians and Muslims in India which are overblown by International Mainstream media therefore they have a negative perception about India. They end up visiting the Karni Mata temple in Bikaner or Hindu crematoriums in Varanasi and mocking Hinduism or they interview Indian women, Christians and Muslims and ask them questions like Is India Safe?
Then some foreigners think of India as a poor country and are only interested in seeing slums in India.
However, when foreigners visit Cambodia which had Khmer Rouge and is not even a democracy, they don't have any preconceived notions.

Goa lost its charm or tourism because of such taxi people ripping tourist off!
Irony is when if you are traveling from Mumbai to Goa via plane ticket is around 3k, and from airport taxi to South or North Goa it is 3-4k.
    Such a shame
