That boat is junk, Cleetus should have this in the bag. Wrong hull for a jet drive, has a junk jet to begin with, and jets are so inefficient that it will take him 3 times as much power to keep up. And that is if he rebuilds the jet and actually blueprints it, and we all know James doesn’t have the knowledge or skill to build a jet pump. Dude doesn’t even know that the headers are called “over the transom”, not “over the hull”.
I love when James is starting it up in the driveway and I see Sam give a big thumbs up far away in the camera shot. So wholesome.

Jackstand: here's a drivability mod for your boat: stick a big ol manual flywheel onto your engine instead of the flex plate! It'll make it start and idle wayy better, and will help the ignition timing stay stable, that was some harsh knocking I was hearing... A real flywheel with some mass will make everything better

Where is he bending the rules?
My father raced Jet boats back in the 70's and 80's. He raced in the unblown gas jet in the SDBA class and the modified gad jet in the NDBA class. The SDBA class limited engine CID to 496, the NDBA class had no limit to engine CID.
His number was 119, Tennessee Lightning because the record for his class was 119 mph. He used a Jim Young blood hull...I was 14 then and he and I could lift the hull off the trailer! He bought a 560cid Big Block from a guy in TX. Back then you couldn't buy a crate motor in that CID. He put that motor in in the boat with a Hilborne fuel injection and a drilled out main pill and the boat flipped at half track.
That hull would trap air between the water and the boat. A new hull was being designed by a local group of guys in Memphis. I was with dad when he was asked to invest in this New type of hull designed not to flip at high speeds. Your red boat looks just like that experimental hull purposed by the guys to my dad. It's a deep vee with tunnels at the rear to release air pressure. You guys may have a piece of jet boat history. Good luck!

Don’t count out those 2 stroke out drives they’re efficient at putting the power down and light as can be. I have a 200hp Mercury that surprises a lot of people while actually being able to have a nice bench seat in the back.

Not necessarily, we don’t know what all is in that motor. Check out the truck named “jack black” on the snidertron3000 channel. Makes 570hp on the engine dyno with stock peanut port heads.

@@CoconutMigrating that definitely isn’t a stock idle, has a cam in it at minimum. We don’t know the compression ratio, don’t know cam specs, don’t know exactly what heads are on it or if it’s had head work, that motor could make more power than most would expect. If you have ever played with big blocks you would know how easy they are to get power out of.
Anyone that knows boats should realize that jet boat is very inefficient. Should accelerate well but top end, Cleetus' boat will easily smoke it...no sweat.

@@JeepnNick Jets dont top out anywhere near what that boat will do. Do some pump work to the boat and put some power to it and that boat will move. He'll probably see 60-65ish. Maybe a little more if that BBC is healthy and the boat is a light layup. There are jets that do well over 100. A lot of them.

I used to hate a lot on the US for many reasons, but lately I get more and more the feeling that I might want to live there one day. So much fun things you can do. I live in Switzerland, which is a paradise in it's own right, but everything is regulated and almost everything is illegal. Even just engines, no matter of what kind are completely banned country-wide.

FYI; that is a Sleekcraft SST Tunnel Jet, they came with either BBC or 460 Ford motors. They were popular in the late 70's and early 80's. Look at the vin number, If its the normal long 12-17 digit vin then its a standard hull, if it says RACE## (1-15) then it's a purpose built light weight Kevlar race hull in which only 15 were made. They were known for getting up to 100 with the right setup. Back in the day I had a Sleekcraft Rebel (semi-v) with BBC and it would do a solid 72 mph, but a 200 HP Merc outboard powered bass boat could outrun me on the top end. Jet boats are quick on the hit but flatten out on the top. Have fun, be safe and don't let that jet boat hook a sponson or your passenger will go flying out! Been there done that!
