Just seeing that x-ray, you can’t help but feel deep sadness for that poor soul for his loss on that terrible day.
He will have a bionic arm that'll just get better over time
My grandfather had a snowmobile accident like 35 years ago, where his leg caught a tree at high speed and was completely smashed. When he got to the emergency room and had the x-ray, the entire tibia and fibula were gone, pulverized to fragments along the entire length. The best doctor in town was in the ER and decided to remove all the bone fragments and try to save the leg before sending him off to a city hospital for more acute care.
When he got there, they said it was a miracle that whoever did the first surgery was able to do it in the first few hours and that any of them would have just amputated the leg.
Anyway, he has had a normal looking leg with titanium rod for bone ever since, and he still walks around alright at 87 lol.
This made me really happy because i have a metal rod in my leg due to a car running over me 10 months ago. I can walk just fine and i almost don't feel the difference except for a handful of slight differences. Thanks for clearing up some anxiety!
Great story!
Small hospital doctors are wild. When my dad got his fingers ripped off by a horse, the small local hospital sewed those suckers back on. Cause I stuck them on ice as soon as it happened, And they were like "ah well, with all that effort it's worth trying". It worked and his fingers even have feeling in most of them. Only one is numb at the very tip
@flinnilyenough what did the horse do to rip them off?

“Yup, it’s broken.”
When I was seven I got my hand stuck in a corn husker. (Farm kid life ftw) My hand was mangled pretty bad. The surgeons knit me back together and told my mom there was only hope because I was young. If I had been an adult, there's no way. But even as a kid, we had to wait to see if I'd keep all my fingers. My thumb and first finger were almost completely amputated. Bones were broken. The flesh was totally shredded. Tendons jacked up.
The surgeon did an outstanding job and I healed up just fine. I have scars all over that hand, but they're so faint that the only way you'd see them is if you really looked for them in good light. Took decades for them to fade to that point.
I think that surgery, antibiotics, and the (unused) pain management systems we have are where modern medicine really shine.

As an EMT for 12 years, got called to a farm one day for a guy that got his lower leg caught in a grain auger. Never seen his X-ray but I’d imagine it was similar as his leg as mangled to hell. Took the fire department over an hr to get him out of it.
By then we already had a helicopter landed in a field, and he was being given high doses of pain meds and also fluids. Tough SOB though, he stayed awake the whole time and was calm as ever.
Lost his lower leg of course, but he didn’t let it slow him down and went back to work on the farm once he got a prosthetic. Working in a small town, you know ppl so everyone on scene except the helicopter crew knew him, so it was personal for all of us working to get his leg free.
Just shows how life can change in an instant for anyone.

Hopefully reconstruction of soft tissue, bones, nerves, and vessels will be possible in the near future. No one deserves to have something like this happen to them in an accident
They can do it now. There just aren't many surgeons capable of fixing something like this.
Doctors have allot of ego. Allot. Most would rather say it's impossible or that nothing is wrong with you, than admit someone else can do something they can't.
The best doctors will recognize they can't and make sure you get to someone who can help you.
Deserving has nothing to do with it
@@thmsvrgsI don't think there any any surgeons who can fix this exact degree of damage, at leasst not to the point where the arm is still functional. You can do nerves, soft tissue, bones, and vessels, but not all at the same time, especially not this extent.

You don't need a professional opinion or X-ray to tell that arm is fucked.
I was in the hospital for special surgery NYC with another patient who fell many stores off his window washing scaffolding. His legs looked worse this.(they had to search around for small fragments that left his body and clean them) Dr Cornell took it upon himself as a pet project just to see if he could put him back together again and he did! He walked out of there before I could!
Before you ask, sections of pipe from the hardware store cut lengthwise and clamped together with bone fragments put together like a jigsaw puzzle in between and a couple of pains of glass left in the skin as windows so he could monitor the progress of the bones knitting.
That's quite a conclusion at the end
Even all the King’s men couldn’t put that arm back together again.
Lol, that arm is in more pieces than humpty dumpty
What about the king's horses!? I bet they can put it back together again!
Doc after the XRAY:
«Mate, i’ll be honest: that arm… is completely fucked»
Although it can’t be reattached, the body will do it for you. The body will create blood clots on each end of the bones which later during the healing process will connect all bones together very slowly and later on will convert to a normal bone again. The blood clots come from your bone marrow which is located inside your bones called spongy bone. That spongy bone makes blood clots and new blood to the body and it the result of the healing process of bone fractures as well.
I'm no doctor, but I didn't need this short to know that it can't be reattached 🤣

My whole entire nervous system when I hit my elbow:
Almost lost my right hand in 2017. The doctors straight up told me it was beyond fixing and the surgeries I had were cosmetic and supposed to hide my deformities. The ER doctor saved my fingers and reattached them. It took me about ten days to find a doctor willing to take me on. He didn't accept my insurance but decided to help me anyway. Four more surgeries, fingers pinned to my palm for six months, nine months of OT. In four months, I'll celebrate the seventh anniversary and if you saw my hand, you'd wouldn't notice the scars until I point them out. I regained 85% control of my hand and can do everything I did before, minus rock climbing and making a complete fist with my right hand. I used the incident as fuel to chase my childhood dream and went on to win awards for my talent and now working full time in a dream-life. The worst injury that ever happened to be turned into the greatest thing that ever happened to me. I had excellent doctors and they truly did their best, but God did the rest. I went from being disabled, loaing my dominant hand, to complete healing and then given a future. Only God can do that. ❤️
