Donut is SO lucky to have Justin and Nolan around to step in and be as awesome and likeable as they are. I really enjoy this content and hope it continues!
I highly recommend cleaning out that fuel tank with acetone and coating the inside with Red-Kote. That will prevent any of that old rust from entering the fuel pickup again.

Fuel tank welding/cutting safety tips: Remove all liquid. Rinse thoroughly and repeatedly. Rinse with solvent, acetone, paint thinner, etc. until rinse fluid drains clear. Let sit twenty four hours minimum. Extra days sitting are not bad. Turn and clamp the tank so that whichever opening is highest on the tank is highest in the air. Tape all but two openings shut. Use a non flammable gas (Argon, CO2, Argon/CO2 mix, etc. if the tank is aluminum use straight argon.) to fill the tank as much as possible with that gas. You want to remove all of the air. Tape the last openings shut. If one is lower than the other, tape the lower port and add more gas, tape the last port shut. Perform any and all cutting/grinding/welding from the highest point to the lowest point. Bonus: if you have a large enough container, put the entire tank in the container and fill the out container with your welding mix. Remember, there is no air in the box, if you put your face in the box you could potentially pass out. If you pass out and your face lands in the box it COULD kill you (as unlikely as it is that your face would end up in the box without knocking it over and spilling the gasses). With no air or flammable fumes in and around the tank there’s no risk of combustion. Safety first, always assume there is a risk of combustion m.
Same in the UK all we have to deal with is the V5c logbook which is proof of ownership the road tax (yearly fee to pay for emissions of the car ) and the MOT (yearly roadworthiness inspection. If it's still in date you don't need to redo it). This car being a 1984 would also be in the "historic vehicle" class meaning you don't need to do MOT or road tax and it's exempt from all clean air zones🫡so all you'd actually need for this one is the logbook and insurance that's it
I love these cars. The commercials back in the day were the best. We had in the Isuzu dealership in Orlando with this iconic sign in front of it was a landmark here. The 1996 Impulse, Nissan Sentra SE-R , Honda Prelude, and Ford Contour SVT were my dream cars as a teen. It's great to see someone working on this project car. You guys have inspired me to venture out and track down my childhood dream cars. Good luck, and be encouraged.
Great video! One small thing about the dampers not rebounding, this is not always a good way to evaluate dampers! A lot of these older cars simply have oil (not oil AND gas filled) dampers and they actually dont rebound on their own!
JUSTIN! If you guys are able to get a hold of the people at hawk performance brake pads, you can send a photo of the pad to them and they can make them for you, it’s what we did for our Miata’s Wilwood brake kit
It is great to see Justin do Justin things! Shout out to Sandro for rocking OG skills, something that is incredibly hard to find (even in a city as large as LA). Zach too, another set of hands make jobs like this go so much faster (and with more laughs). Justin, I remember a rumor that the Impulse was originally Giugiaro’s design for the Mk II Scirocco but VW deemed it too futuristic and scaled it back to the design we all know. Either way, yours is looking great on those lower springs!
Former CA DMV employee here. It’s been some time since I was working those lines but vehicle registration can get awfully complicated pretty fast. But I know from experience that, back when I worked there in the early 2000’s, if you found the right person at the office who knew their stuff well that even complicated problems could be easily resolved. But finding that person at the DMV isn’t exactly easy so having a registration service do it really does alleviate the stress. I was usually ‘the guy on the inside’ because I actually had the authority and leeway to waive fees, certain requirements, and usually clean up an otherwise messy operation. Believe me, the customer is definitely not the only person who appreciates a streamline solution to a messy situation.
What makes this a good video you ask? Justin’s passion for the content. You can’t fake the real emotions he displayed in this video. Donut decision makers: take notes.
Props for Sandro cutting and welding that tank! He knows what he's doing! You can't simply weld a gas tank. It has gasoline vapors and can literally explode when welding. Some people fill the tank with argon gas. Some people fill it with dry ice. Anything to displace the oxygen while welding.
You guys are doing a great job listening to your viewers and giving them what they want. All the hoopla made when James, Jobe, and Jeremiah announced they were leaving was overblown and I'm happy to see you continuing to do what has made this channel great.
It took them 3 of their main hosts to leave to finally work on project cars but now it seems like damage control to me. They are even following the same style Big time are using
@@MmmNumNumz You mean Big Time is using the same style Donut had been for a long time already? And of course it's damage control. What, is a company only good in your eyes if they just give up and purposefully fail when they mess up instead of learning from their mistakes?
Zach Diehl is a welcome addition to Donut. Wish he got a better introduction to the channel but he shines here, dude rocks. This is the kinda content Donut has been missing, and is why Big Time was immediately successful. Hopeful for the future of Donut with videos like this and Hi Low being back.
I have a PIAZZA in Japan and drive it every day. You guys did a great job overcoming the difficulties! Thank you for getting another IMPULSE back on the road!
Kinda some disrespect towards Jobey that they are now making videos working on crew members project cars when he asked prior and were denied plenty of times. Now that they see that Big time is doing good with videos like those they decide to start making videos like these and guess what, in their garage. Low blow or damage control? You be the judge
No, I don't think I will. In all seriousness, they made a poor decision and decided to correct for it a little too late. That sucks. But it's not some sort of personal attack, and talking about it like it is just shows a lack of maturity.
Getting frustrated, trying to find discontinued parts, out of the box work arounds and working with friends. Form memories, and connections with other enthusiasts. I'm glad to see you back on the road 💪
1:08 okay so I called this tundra a tacoma under the video of donut girl (sorry i can't remember your name) getting her car decked out for offroading. Sorry Tundra. You're a beautiful truck.

Justin and Nolan are straight up carry donut in there back to keep this channel alive and I praise them for it 💪. I'd like to see a series on Justin's barn car project for sure.
It’s a big undertaking to get an old car back on the road without much support for aftermarket parts or NOS stuff. It’s easy to restore a GM C-10 or K5, but a car like this Impulse, you have to be resourceful and patient. Mad respect to you, Justin. I can totally relate. Can’t wait to see how this car progresses.
I can't imagine how long Justin mustve had to wait to make this video and I'm so happy he finally got to make it. This is quintessential donut. Love of cars shared between great friends making memories together
One consistent thing I noticed about restoring old cars that have been sitting is that the fuel system needs a complete refresh - nearly everytime! Typically the battery will be dead, spark/ignition trouble can occur uncommonly as well, but without a doubt - almost everytime - the fuel system needs a complete refresh. If I ever plan to park a car for years, I'm suctioning the fuel tank empty, or putting some fuel stabilizer inside.
Ive always liked Justin! What kills me is he is just now getting some type of real recognition on the channel which im glad is happening but i cant help but feel this wasnt a natural course for him to finally get to this point either way i hope Justin is happy and i hope to really see more of him getting his on project series and getting to share that with us much love man!
"The car barely runs and needs a rebuild"
"I found lowering springs"
I love you guys
A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do🫡
It's just so relatable when I bought my car it was like check engine lights etc. So I bought an exhaust 😅
My transmission alil iffy. I just installed coilovers over the weekend .
My engine is knocking, so I rolled my fenders 🤣

One of my favorite Donut episodes. Justin has my style of uniqueness when it comes to cars. Love the impulse!❤
Props for Sandro cutting and welding that tank! He knows what he's doing! You can't simply weld a gas tank. It has gasoline vapors and can literally explode when welding. Some people fill the tank with argon gas. Some people fill it with dry ice. Anything to displace the oxygen while welding.
"we're just fat and slow" story of my life doing anything to my car lmao.
Fat and slow is the story of my life. Don't feel bad
Love it. Justin with a weird car, in a hot driveway with a friend. Great content.
They are even following the same style Big time are using
@@MmmNumNumz
You mean Big Time is using the same style Donut had been for a long time already?
BEST CHEVETTE EVER! Giugiaro design FTW!
Kinda some disrespect towards Jobey that they are now making videos working on crew members project cars when he asked prior and were denied plenty of times. Now that they see that Big time is doing good with videos like those they decide to start making videos like these and guess what, in their garage. Low blow or damage control? You be the judge
Thats what im thinking too

No, I don't think I will.
In all seriousness, they made a poor decision and decided to correct for it a little too late. That sucks. But it's not some sort of personal attack, and talking about it like it is just shows a lack of maturity.
1:57 I feel attacked
Same. That shit was personal.
Getting frustrated, trying to find discontinued parts, out of the box work arounds and working with friends.
Form memories, and connections with other enthusiasts. I'm glad to see you back on the road 💪
These guys are awesome to watch together. Love the unique project car, and the struggle is what makes it so entertaining. Keep it coming, guys.❤❤❤
2:40 sorry you live in California where they designed smog tests to keep cars like yours off the roads as much as possible.
Best state to buy a used Car I believe. Other States let you sale wrecked and parts. Less Scams in California I think.
1:08 okay so I called this tundra a tacoma under the video of donut girl (sorry i can't remember your name) getting her car decked out for offroading. Sorry Tundra. You're a beautiful truck.
Best way to pass the "smog" test... Leave California..
Love an all Justin episode! Easily my favorite dude on Donut. Glad you've got your long awaited project car on the road!
I'm so glad to see Justin adventures with this car continue. Thanks Donut
Geo Storm!
YES! I had a Storm, so much fun to drive!
This video is not about fixing cars, is about how terrible California is to fix cars
But they’re all for clean energy and repairability 👉🏻👈🏻
20:37 and that’s why Donut is failing. Tight deadlines forcing y’all to do things the fast way, not the right way.
I think you’re right but I think in this case its cause they’re filming high low at the same time. I dont know why they would just start filming a random restoration video during their most intense series
Justin, you gotta good eye Sir! I've definitely appreciated those impulses since they came out. I'm glad someone actually brought one back to life.
Wow! One of the best Donut videos I’ve ever seen! Bravo! Justin is brilliant. Videos like this why I started watching Donut. We need more Justin!
This was awesome! Justin is a great host and glad this got a longer video.
one of the best videos in a while honestly. I'd love to see more Isuzu stuff, especially if you have to make it custom.
Need more videos like this Justin is and Zach are fun to watch
that nut tap was true friendship. Also let sandro fuck with the van
I can't imagine how long Justin mustve had to wait to make this video and I'm so happy he finally got to make it. This is quintessential donut. Love of cars shared between great friends making memories together
This is the type of content I subscribed to donut for. Let's get back to more of this, no more corporate drivel content.
Yes. I want to see this super clean. So rare to get rare cars restored to its glory
Im happy for you!
This is what I want. Shows like these with people like Justin who are into cool cars and getting them on the road again.
We need more of the last few minutes of this video. Speaking to what our odd car tastes do to us and where they originate from is a refreshing look into who you are. 👏🏼
The fact that you know what this is and want to refurbish it earns you so many more cool points than anybody else at doughnut. This is literally one of my dream cars. I'm restomodding a 1995 Galant.
I remember seeing the Isuzu impulse around when I was younger. There wasn't many of them but I thought they were cool. Also, would love to see Justin get more spotlight. He's a cool dude. Keep the project cars and build episodes coming.
Most relatable video I’ve seen about working on cars with ya mates. It’s not always easy or even fun but it’s that feeling when it’s done that makes it all so worth it 👌🏽 great video
Just listened to the isuzu podcast on past gas. It makes this episode even nicer! Great stuff Justin!
Kudos to you for getting this classic back on the road. I owned a couple of "Buick" Opel Isuzus and I'm thrilled to see another oddball Isuzu get saved. The thing runs a lot better than either of my Opels did (even when they were new).
This is one of the best Donut vids I've watched in a long time. I'd love to see more of this car and more videos just like this.
This is exactly what we want from Donut! Awesome stuff.
Awesome job Justin, Zach and Sandro!
