Hey, what if you could LINK animation speed with fatigue?
If you think about it it solves everything without changeing dicerolls while fixing mechanics and visuals. It doeas not look stupid, and explain visually to every new player why they missed, and if they did hit...why damage is low. Also would prevent player making those combo avalanche striking fast hitting nothing barrage at fatigue

In Gothic its the same, both games hold a special place in my memory, they are both very satisfying by progressing, something oblivion and skyrim only achieve for the sake of exploring, your place in those worlds are never in question, and there is little satisfaction, or in game reribution for progressing. why though? Directions are tedious - and ruthless. Lack of understanding what exactly to do and where things are can lead you to walking around a dungeon for half your playthrough with little insight to where a dwemer puzzle cube is. Added on to the multitude of other frustrating and outdated things in Morrowind it just makes it annoying man.

    • @raioh4747

@@FBIAgent-bs9ie thats the thing, to me, finding out how to play, what to do or where to go, is part of the game, any game.
When the player allready knows what to do it only becomes a question of execution, and that creates a different play session from a player who doesn't, he will have to figure it out and maybe come up with their own personal solutions, if the game is good like morrowind.
I understand most people simply want to know what to do and execute that goal, thats probably why most triple As now a days mark and tell you everything, but there's also something lost in that, and other people are seeking exactly that lost part of the gaming experience

    • @MaakaSakuranbo
      @MaakaSakuranbo 3 роки тому +4

@@FBIAgent-bs9ie To me an RPG is a lot about the world. I want the world to feel fully realised. With NPCs having schedules, doing their own things, dynamic stuff happening, etc.
Not having markers helps that, it makes you engage with the world as a physical space. You think about where things are in relation to each other. You better remember where stuff is, especially as you first have to figure out where it is. And traversing the world ends up feeling more natural.
While markers don't make it impossible to engage with the world, they do encourage it to just chase the marker imo. Including silly things like jumping up the side of a mountain because it's the straight path towards the marker, rather than taking the road that leads up the mountain - because you were given direction to follow that road.
Now, where it makes sense, I'm not against marking something on a map. It makes sense an NPC who sends you somewhere may know where that thing is on the map and thus show your character. Then the marker serves as a reminder of what your character knows. That said, there may be plenty of NPC in such a world who live in their small town and never really bothered looking at a map. They just know the church is down that way then to the right.
Add fast travel and after beelining to the marker, next time you'll go there you'll even just teleport, removing even more physical aspects from the world. As now, you just teleport between a few points.
There's also the issue of "tedious". What makes something tedious? When do you remove something tedious? Literally everything in a game is there because the developers programmed it to be after all. Dying is tedious for one, so you could have HP removed, but barely anyone would want that. It's tedious to chase down a fleeing enemy, so don't have them flee anymore, etc.

An overlooked mod which I consider essential is Syclonix Herbalism for Purists. It fixes the container system for collecting herbs to make it far less tedious by simply putting the ingredients into your inventory automatically. This was such a qol improvement that Bethesda incorporated that mechanic into Oblivion and Skyrim.

Support for GH is even built into OpenMW now, though you still have to download the modified meshes for it to work.

The lack of voice acting is one of Morrowinds greatest strength, it tells so many more stories, in a much deeper and more enjoyable way. You'd need so many lines of voice acting in Morrowind that it'd be exabytes in size, imagine recording voice for every written word in the game!? a large part of why later Elder Scrolls games (and many others) feel so shallow is the voice acting, it kills deep writing.
Combat, marmite, I get it. Morrowind wasn't meant to be an action RPG, it's sort of a real-time-turn-based RPG. Didn't really need fixing, but if your mod brings new players to Morrowind then it's amazing! Great job! The more the merrier, this is one hell of a game.

Yeah, no stamina no hitting anything and he calls it the worst nightmare of a new players. Damn Silent Night, you should know it's probably one of the best what comes from Morrowind that by using a weapon you actually teach yourself how to do more and more accurate damage, i.e at first you hit 1/10, then it gets better and finally you can hit 10/10 after you trained a lot. It's a brilliant idea and you try to ruin it by some hero hitter weapon mode, which is immerse breaking. No stamina means do something to get it back, then practice more. Then use SPEARS to keep enemies on distance. Or bows - those are hillarious at the beginning, beacause arrows with 1/10 efficiency needs a lot of care. But it pays off, like the patience usually do :). Liked it anyway and subscribed :).

And agility as a stat is also almost entirely based around increasing your chance to hit while reducing the chance of being hit through miss or block. I think that while you do start out feeling so pathetically weak in MW, this is actually a big strength of the game as it allows you to really, really feel like you're becoming better, and the end be super powerful. In Skyrim and Oblivion you swing, you hit, and their health bar goes down some amount, from low level to high level. It might be a stronger, higher level mob sure, but the feeling to you as to how skilled your character is is the same.

Up to this day, Morrowind is my FAVORITE TES game! Oblivium and Skyrim are great games and I do loved them, but they never were able to capture that "something special" that I got from MOrrowind. There is a sense of wonder and I think the strangeness of the look of the land in Morrowind's island does somethign special for this game. For anyone who hasn't play this game, I'd recomend to improve textures, and maybe MW rebirth and the bundle of patches/mods from the developers and its is great. Its a great game to go back to and the Lore on this game is Great! Yeah, you have to read a bit more, Yeah, you don't have a quest arrow, but I like that about the game. It is about exploring! and its a great place to explore!

The obvious problems with screwing with Morrowind's combat system aside, saying Morrowind Rebirth & Tamriel Rebuilt are not compatible is very misleading. I've played hundreds of hours with both and never noticed any overlap. The problem is they're not made for each other balance wise, not that they're not compatible. The balance issues are minimal and I highly suggest people use them together.
All together, this feels like a mod setup made for people that don't like Morrowind rather than an enhancement. But it's a well out together video even if the mod choices are questionable.

It becomes a non issue by level 10, and before that it's not too bad if you manage your stamina. Your combat mod definitely makes the game more more accessible for new players, but when you're able to build a good character and then only use your main weapon skills and keep an eye on fatigue you'll hit with about every 2nd attack at level 1, so it's not really that big of an issue when the game is being played properly.

"Morrowind is a great game that hasn't aged well. " Is in the description of the video.
First off, I love the video, and keep up the great content. The following isn't a complaint:
although i get your point, and I agree that Mods make it 10000% better, I'd like to offer a simple anecdote in contrast to this claim.
My buddy got the game in his mid-late 20s having never played it, and he refused to play it with mods. He didn't beat the main campaign but he did love the game and sunk many hours into it. I only say this to convey the point that Morrowind HAS aged pretty well. the stock game on steam runs well at classic resolutions and the game mechanics make sense. agility and other factors like stamina effect hit chance etc.
The base game still has the epic OST, memorable characters and setting etc. I personally agree with Silent Night, mods make the game have longevity, but that is also what makes Morrowind-Skyrim special games; namely, Bethesda had a philosophy of releasing the Construction Set in conjunction with the game for free.
This, at the time, was a HUGE deal and is the main reason Morrowind outlasted the famous Never-winter Nights and other great games of the same era in terms of relevance over time. In a way, the very moddability of Morrowind is a part of the base game, and while the base is good, the mods give it so much more. I don't know why I rambled (yes i do: beer), but I cannot personally play it without mods, yet some people still see the value in the unmodded experience. great video.
EDIT: I'll add that Silent Night is correct that OpenMW is THE way to play the game. and the newest version of Morrowind Rebirth FINALLY works with the .46 version of OpenMW, which is the only two mods you need to have a near-vanilla experience that is less broken than the orignal.

    • @SilentNightx
      @SilentNightx  4 роки тому +1

Well put. When I say that I guess I was comparing it to some of the older 2D pixel art games that are still just as impressive and beautiful today as they were back then. Morrowind comes from a weird time period when the 3D tech was just starting to get good but wasn't quite there yet. I think early 3D graphics have aged quite poorly in general. They were impressive when they came out but are pretty meh today.
The combat system it uses also really isn't used anymore because most people prefer either action or turn based for their RPGs instead of the weird hybrid. That part aged poorly too.
I agree that some aspects of the game still hold up even without mods but since there are some major parts that don't, I can't say it aged well.
Also I hear people saying that the stock game runs well for them but for me it was awful. Must be hardware specific. On my hardware it would crash when I tab out and sometimes areas would load at 14 FPS.

    Building Up Uvirith's Legacy
    Rise of House Telvanni

fixes some of the issues with Uvirith's Legacy a while back, but

Exactly, you can build your character in a way that you will pretty much never miss from the start of the game, unless you play like an idiot and fight without stamina.
Combat is Skyrim is actually the same as in Morrowind, the difference is that any mage can grab a sword and kill a dragon with it, it just takes more time that it would for a fighter. In Morrowind without actual skill with a weapon, a warrior sign or high agility your mage will get wrecked by any common bandit if he attempts this. RPG system of Morrowind enforces roleplaying and doesn't allow you to be good at everything at once. You have to specialize and invest time and effort to be something. Not unlike real life.

      1. the unvoiced dialogue thing is kind of a gripe, but I'm used to it. Not really worth modding in my opinion
      2. the lack of directional objectives for quests isn't a problem to me at all, it's the exact incentive that a true RPG should have, which the company has done away with for some reason in order to lure as many new players to their games, so they can make more money.
      3. the "accurate attack" mod already exists and has existed for a long time, but it's way more realistic that not all of your hits would connect regardless of if you're right next to them. In the real world, nobody is Deathstroke with a katana. You're still bound by physical reality, and constantly swinging your sword affects the overall means of your swing etc. Taking into account the inspiration for the game, Dungeons and Dragons, it's actually still better to take the _hit chance_ into consideration.

    • @SilentNightx

I'll probably revisit Morrowind mods in the future. Yeah unvoiced dialogue is meh (good and bad about it), the old style questing system is actually great once you get used to it, and the dice roll D&D combat just feels poorly translated to video game form. My mod isn't just a recreation of accurate attack, it does so much more than just set hit chance to 100% and call it a day.

probably a hot take but I hate how a lot of the time, it doesn't mark the specific location that you to go on your game map. I hate it when I have to pull out my phone because the directions the NPC's gives you because sometimes you can't memorize all of what they say.
I think a good balance from not holding your hand but also labeling the specific place you need to go is a nice balance. Because say if you just have to randomly kill a bandit in some cave, you at least know where to go to find the cave, but you need to explore in the said cave to kill the bandit.
Oblivion actually did this well with the one quest where you find whoever stole a painting which I think was in Bruma. It only marked the people you needed to talk to, but it was up to you to explore the castle for clues.

The best one ive found also is ones that make the font more legible so you can read. Since this video has come out voice scripted a eyes have also made it possible to have all of Dagoth Ur's voice lines spoken out. There is also my favorite mod which makes Dagothwave play at the final fight

Considering that heavily pixelated games like diablo 2 and baldur's gate 2 came out about the same time, i'd say morrowind has aged quite well for a game from it's day. But, yes, some graphics mods do make it better.

People who criticise the combat system in Morrowind miss the point of Morrowind entirely. Morrowind is a tabletop RPG made into a computer game. If you want to play a FPS go play something else, like literally anything else.

Honestly there are a lot of outdated things about Morrowind. However if you simply use a guide it opens up a game that is incredible. I know you shouldn't have to use a guide, but it is what it is.

Skyrim has been the main game I've put the most time into in the series, by a WIDE margin. That being said, I played Oblivion first and have dabbled in it through the years. If I hadn't had that experience, I don't think I would've been able to get into Morrowind. I did recently, and it's been incredible. I've got a bunch of hours in a honorable type warrior nord character, and there's so many factions and quests I haven't even touched yet. I'm not even close to done yet and I'm already excited to start a new character lol. For a person who doesn't necessarily do heavy roleplaying but wants their character's actions and decisions to make sense, the ability to make that work has really massively declined through the titles. I'm sure TES6 will be incredible in its own way, but I really do hope that many of the gameplay systems aren't nearly as shallow as Skyrim's.

I think I have a better concept for a combat mod:
Based on different factors, you have a chance to miss. What if these factors, instead of making it more likely to miss, made you just do less damage? So here's an example: If you have full stamina, an Axe skill level of 50 and using an axe. Let's say you have a 10% chance to miss / 90% hit chance. If you hit, let's say you do 100 damage based on your current attributes, but with this rework, you would deal 90 damage (100x0.90). Then, if your stamina runs out, you will have a 50/50% chance to hit/miss. Then you deal 50 damage per hit.
So now, assuming you have full stamina, you're going to fight an enemy with a 1000 health. With the old system, you will have to connect 10 hits to take him out. With my system, you need 12 hits (1000/90=11,11).
So now you might say: "That just makes me do less damage then? How is this balanced?"
You have to take into consideration that with the old system, you have to CONNECT with 10 hits. So it may take you 10 swings, 12 swings, or even more, depending on your RNG. 10% chance to miss is not a lot, but RNG is RNG.
This is the best option to do this in my opinion, as everything else is just giving you a boost without making up for it in other ways. So now, increasing a weapon skill will actually make you do more damage, since the hit chance is increased with higher weapon skill, which in my system means more damage.

    • @Rickagon
      @Rickagon 3 роки тому

Also, IMO, stamina should not be decreased by "running", if you even can call it that. Jumping and swinging your weapon is enough I think (maybe make it decrease a bit more per jump/attack).

Sounds cool, but also something that would require MWSE to work in vanilla and there would have to be a separate version for OpenMW.
