    About the date:
during the coin flip scene with the store clerk, Chigur says that the date on the coin is 1958 and "it took 22 years to get here", which means that the movie is set in 1980.

So glad you reacted to this! The choice by the Coen brothers not to use any music throughout the movie amplifies the suspense to the utmost. The final line delivered by Tommy Lee Jones (the sheriff) just might be the best final line of a movie ever…”And then I woke up.”
The movie is based off the book by the same name written by Cormac McCarthy if you enjoy reading.

Jade, Carson (Woody Harrelson) is basically a modern-day bounty hunter, and he did indeed have in-depth personal knowledge of the psychopath Anton Chiggur (and vice versa) as a result. Carson was hired to track down the psycho killer and recover the money, which put him on a collision course with the main characters.
One of the underlying themes of this movie is to demonstrate how much chance, random events, and pure luck (good or bad) influence our lives and determine our Fates. The psychopath Anton is himself just a force of nature, which some ordinary folks had the misfortune to encounter at the wrong time and place…

Lessons from this movie if you ever find a bag full of cash:
    1) Don't ever go back to where you found it - no hero shit
    2) Empty the bag and dump it somewhere
    3) Go through each and every bill one by one to make sure there isn't a tracker

    Some little trivia details:
The Tommy Lee Jones character is based off of a real person, Sheriff Jim Wilson. He patrolled the area Tommy Lee Jones worked in this film.
Woody Harrelson's father was a hitman who whacked a Texas judge in the 80s. It's referenced in this film.
The scene with Anton Chigurgh attacking Llewelyn Moss at the hotel by the border wasn't in the book. In the book, Llewelyn Moss finds the tracker earlier and uses it to trick Anton and lure him into a trap. Moss gets the drop on Anton and is about to take him out, when the rest of the criminals tracking the money show up also looking for the tracker. Anton gets away in the ensuing gunfight. They rewrote this scene into what it became, showcasing actual tactics Vietnam vets were using (such as Llewelyn's tactical retreat back into the hotel).

I always say that "No Country For Old Men" is about morality. Moss is moral, but very flawed. Because of that, Moss dies. Chigurh is amoral and believes in random violence. In the end, Chigurh is a victim of random violence with a bone sticking out of his arm. The bone sticking out of his arm indicates that he will die soon because he can't seek proper help in the hospital. I remember the book states that he was never found, which leads us to conclude that the cartel disposed of Chigurh's body. The last man standing is Bell, who doesn't realize that he came out on top because he is the most moral person of the the film. There is no indication of any moral flaws in Bell's character. Bell always tries to do the right thing and worries about defeating evil. Bell worries about God never finding him, but his God is his moral integrity, which he never abandons. Moral people worry about the evil in the world often without realizing when they are doing well. His dream in the end indicates that he is following the path of another moral man, his father, who is saving a spot for him (John 14).

That's an interesting interpretation, and I can totally see it. My personal perspective after having seen it so much is that it is ultimately about dissecting and destroying the ideologies held by the three men, with Sheriff Bell's being the most important. These ideologies, while not necessarily uniquely American, are very important myths within the American cultural framework. At the beginning of the story, we learn that Bell is a man who believes the world is turning to shit. He sees poverty and crime every day in his line of work, and every terrible case he gets compounds on this feeling he has. We even get that scene where he and the other sheriff talk about kids walking around with green hair and facial piercings. They are old men watching the world change in ways they did not expect, and they blame those changes for the reason they see the world becoming worse. But we are told essentially three times that they are wrong. The first is when Bell's brother outright tells him he's wrong and gives him that story about when they were younger; "What you got ain't nothing new." The second time is when Chigurh gets into the car crash. This scene actually mirrors when Moss crosses into Mexico. The three men first ask Moss if he's been in a car crash, and after being dicks about him paying for the coat, one of the men tries to exploit his request for the beer to try and get more money from him. When Chigurh crashes, the younger boys initially decline the money, because helping Chigurh was more important. Then we get Bell's dream, where he tells the story of his father holding the dark at bay with his torch. His father passed, and it was now his turn to hold the torch. Bell believes the world is worse now, not because it is, but because he has to face the dark directly now that he holds the torch.
Chigurh is, in my view, a representation of pure unchecked, unregulated capitalism. He sees himself as outside of the scope of human affairs, something that just is, and is willing to do anything to get his hands on that money. He doesn't really believe that his actions are his own, like when he says that the coin decides what happens. And that specific parallel, that not only is he constantly searching for money the whole film, but that a literal piece of currency dictates his actions, is a perfect representation of that in my opinion. But he is hit by the car because his own rule led him to that spot. "If the rule you followed brought you to this, what use was the rule?" Chigurh followed through on his promise to hurt Carla Jean, and he himself lost because of it, the same way that the internal rules of that unchecked capitalism lead to it's own demise, as you have the workers who want to make money, and the business owners who want to keep it, leading to constant struggle.
Then we get to Llewellyn Moss, who holds onto the myth of American meritocracy. He believes that because of his determination and grit, he can beat Chigurh. He just knows in his heart that his hard work will pay off. But it doesn't, because there are always forces outside of our own control. There are always factors that we are incapable of accounting for, and that's exactly what the Mexicans were to him. Just as the woman at the pool tells him, people never see what's coming, because ultimately they can't.

@@erwinquiachon8054 Capitalism by itself isn’t inherently fascist. All capitalism does is allow the most freedom to those who abide by it. Unfortunately mankind being what is, inherently evil, with good morals needing to be enforced and evil acts coming natural to mankind itself, takes advantage of that freedom and utilizes it for personal gain. Now having said that, having a great deal of money doesn’t automatically make one evil. In fact the darkness within man, ie man’s covetousness(jealousy), that makes people who want what they don’t have assume they are in the right for wanting it. Sure, a lot of people have done bad things to gain money and capitalism makes it that much easier for them. However, not all who have money have done horrible things to get it and capitalism makes it easier for them as well.
The point of the matter is people love pointing their fingers at capitalism like it’s the big evil boogeyman when in reality it’s mankind’s own nature of inborn immorality that is the problem. All capitalism does is what it’s supposed to. Which is to allow its followers to simply do what they please within the confines of the established law. You want to talk about a fiscal/governmental system that IS innately vile in its very existence then look no further than Marxism. Marxism is responsible for the deaths of well over 100 million people in just the last 100 years.

Most of Cormac McCarthy's (author of the novel from which this movie was adapted) stories are like this. Beautifully crafted, but VERY bleak. Another great movie based on one of his books is "The Road" with Viggo Mortensen. Yet another one that is fantastic is "The Sunset Limited." That one might be rather hard to react to, as there are only two actors (Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson) and it takes place in a single room. It was written as a stage play, and is a dialogue on faith vs. Schopenhauer-esque nihilism.

A fantastic thriller from the Coen brothers that is in a league of its own.
Javier Bardem as Anton Chigurh is outstanding as a psychopathic contract killer with a “chic” hairstyle and an ice-cold stare.
    His Oscar is well deserved.
A total of 4 Oscars were awarded for this milestone in the thriller genre.
PS: The scenes full of blood are of course fake blood. And the open wounds owe their nasty appearance to excellent make-up artists etc.
If you keep that in mind, you should be able to watch such scenes. 😉

You should see the first film by the Coen Brothers. It is called, "Blood Simple". Yeah, it's crazy also. Fargo is another one! They make fantastic films.
    Loved you reaction.

Carson was a Vietnam vet who likely went into criminal security jobs--likely as a hitman or a gunhand, but also possibly a fixer--because his combat experience and training would have done him more good there than civilian life. He likely met and/or worked with Chigurh on previous jobs and so that's how they knew each other. He was likely hired for this experience because the American buyers were probably unhappy that Chigurh was killing everybody in his path, including their own employees.

Unlike other Coen brothers films this one is very close to its source material, a novel by Cormac McCarthy, and excellent novelist who writes moving stories of the old, and new west. His trilogy, which begins with All the Pretty Horses, was also made into a movie, starring Matt Damon.
Another modern western, with great writing, great casting, and a contemporary, realistic topic, is Hell or High Water. You should check that out, when you get the time.

    The Coen Brothers' *darkest* hour.
They've done 'pure' Western work (their version of "True Grit"), but this one has much more of that end-of-the-road elegy feeling (like Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven" or Sam Peckinpah's "Wild Bunch").
Anyhow, seeing it in the theater was beautiful (especially that hushed ending), and I was completely unprepared--- for that Javier Bardem guy...

-Accountant: Are you going to shoot me?
-Chigurg: That depends. Do you see me?
-Accountant: Oh, my lord, I got blind. Oh, dear heavens, I've just got blind in this very moment. What it will become for me, poor old me, now that I've just got blind?.. Did I already mention I've just got blind?

Another suggestion, "Sicario" is a suspense crime flick centering around the drug cartels in the he same geographic region (south west).
ETA:, Some other Coen Bros. classics are "Fargo", "The Big Lebowski" and the dark comedy "Burn After Reading".

My belief it is trying to show sometimes evil(Anton) wins and good is defeated(Sheriff Bell)
Think there are 2 important scenes.
    1. Carla Jean who represents purity refuses to call it. It messes with Anton’s code but he kills her anyway. Just the short delay caused him to be in the intersection right when the person runs red light. He still escapes .
2 Sheriff Bell and cousin Ennis discuss what the evil of the time has made Bell feel like a failure, and how God has abandoned him. At the end all he has is bad dreams because the case and the evil messed with his psyche and faith
    Did you notice no music??
Basically the only score is the wind in many scenes
    At least IMO.
    Nice reaction
