She didn't only have one bullet: she fell in the water and got the gunpowder wet in the antique pistol she was using (it didn't use cartridges, so if the cylinder chambers get wet, it won't fire).
🤠👍 In the 1969 version of this, the age of Mattie Ross was moved up from 14 to 16 and the actress who played her (Kim Darby) was actually 20. While this version might be more faithful to the book, the original has a much much more memorable musical score (by the late great Elmer Bernstein). 😉
The horse was dead on its feet---it had been ridden well past its ability to recover--stabbing it initiated the panic/prey response so that it could keep going even though it was exhausted-- the gurgling and foaming and panting at the end would tend to indicate either cardiac arrest or asphyxiation due to hyperventilation. Rooster shot it because it was just going to lay there and slowly die; believe it or not, it was done out of mercy.
No I know, it's so awful, and I know he did that purely to save Maddie but it just is so awful and I wish he didn't have to push him that far but he had to. 💔
@@MovieJoobi appreciate so much of the horse's sacrifice. Such a good movie that a horse gets an impactful part. Was just a pony but strong enough to get Maddie back in time to save her life.
A horse is like a car you can drive with an empty tank until it dies, if you're callous about it. Not even Mattie could stand it; which I think works as a hugely humanizing moment for her.
The older Maddy was correct... there is always a price to be paid. Maddy paid for bloody vengeance with an arm, her horse, and her soul (becoming a bitter, old spinster)
Very very true. It cost her a lot. I wonder if she felt satisfied with her decision as she aged further in life but I feel like she seems proud and accomplished with her choices so good for her!!

The reason why Texas Rangers during this time don't like large fires is because the majority of what they did was track and hunt down the worst criminals in Texas and Indian raiding parties. So the Rangers came up with what they called cold camp. If you have a large fire, whoever you're hunting can see you.
In the original version of this movie(1970), John Wayne earned his ONLY Oscar for the role of Rooster Cogburne. He also made a sequel with the legendary Katherine Hepburne called Rooster Cogburne. Both would be worthy of your reaction.
Great Reaction. I love this movie. I am a 50 M from Western US and I enjoy re-watching my fav tv/movies with such a lovely, smart, and caring young lady. Thank you!
This version is very good. A close race with the original, with John Wayne. I like the first one a bit more. John Wayne won an Academy Award for his part in the original True Grit. Then he made a sequel, called Rooster Cogburn. Really good, with a truly great actress...Katharine Hepburn, as co-star. Unlike Rooster, my spelling isn't off, at least not in her name. Her first name is spelled with two "a's". :) Anyhow, this one is fun to watch, so thanks for letting us watch it with you. God bless you!
Better than the original. It’s not exactly a remake though. They are both adaptations of the novel by Charles Portis, but the 2010 version is more faithful to the book.
She's saying "aww, that's a nice horse". Clearly she knows nothing about this story ends at all. 9:39 into watching this and I'm predicting her complete meltdown with tears and ol'Blacky's demise. For what it's worth the dialog bmbetween her and the stablemaster is some of the best acted dialog you'll come across in film. It's not as flowery as Eowyn and Grima's in LOTR and the Two Towers. But it is still a thing of beauty to behold. Hailee really made this role her own and demonstrated some significant acting chops while doing so. I've respected her ever since. I don't think she saw Rooster stabbing the horse to keep it running... huh, well I expected her to meltdown. Move JooB held it together.
The argu.ent over Quantrill is a reference to the Civil War in Missouri and the raid on Lawrence, Kansas. That's the subject of a great western directed by Ang Lee, title Ride With the Devil. Stars Toby Maguire.
To expand on this; LaBeouf served in the Army of Northern Virginia, under General Robert E. Lee. He was a regular soldier. Rooster Cogburn was with Quantrill, and they were guerrilla fighters. Basically outlaws who attacked civilians.
I agree with most of your comment. I love the Duke but this version is just about my favorite movie of all time. My only quibble is that movie versions always deviate from the book and this one is no exception. If you ask me, it's a wash which one is actually more true to the source material.
If you are a reader this is based off a book and they were pretty true to it in the movie. The book does explain some stuff that the movie does not like the one guy making all the animal noises it explains that. The original movie with John Wayne is pretty good but I do prefer this version better.
It's a crime Steinfeld didn't win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress because it is a straight up miracle that someone could even come close to Kim Darby's Maddie Ross. And in her debut role? Blowing those kinds of legends out of the water his her performance when they're having good days? The 1969 is my favorite John Wayne western and I fell head over heels for her instantly because she was the greatest shit talker to ever bandy words (and let's be honest, smokin). It's a miracle this movie was as good as it was because this especailly shouldn't have ever been made again, but they did it. I like the original story better (this has stuff like the medicine man and hanging man added and a different ending) although I enjoy this one as well.
As the Olympics are this summer, I suggest "Munich" (2005) directed by Steven Spielberg Since they are in Paris this year: "Ronin" (1998) "La Femme Nikita" (1990) "Day of the Jackal" (1973) "The Three Musketeers" (1973 version) & part 2 "The Four Musketeers" (1974) "The Count of Monte Cristo" (2002 version) "Dangerous Liasons" (1988 version)
So many here have already suggested the John Wayne original. I'd like to add Quiggly Down Under and Man From Snowy River. Not American old West but good films
Good stuff! This film remake is much closer to the novel than the first. The book was entirely narrated by Mattie, as is this movie. The second thing going for the movie is being made by the Coen brothers. Nice reaction.. For a little different, yet arguably satirical, but accurate, movie, you could check out 1970's "Little Big Man" sad, funny, and great acting, including my favorite Native American actor, Chief Dan George. He can also be found doing a great role in the Clint Eastwood film "The Outlaw Josey Wales", another good film.
I love your current run of westerns. Do you know that there are a number of "westerns" set in Australia? Two I recommend The Proposition (2005) is a serious drama, and Quigley Down Under (1990) is a little bit light hearted.
You should also check out the original "True Grit" from 1969 with John Wayne. Exact same story. Very different telling. It really is worth seeing both but don't expect them to be the same. Close but not the same.
Great Reaction MovieJoob! When I first saw this version of True Grit I was so blown away by Hailee Steinfelds acting! But there’s a pretty good western from your neck of the woods! The Man From Snowy River! This came out when westerners were hard to find in the early 80’s! And another Australian Movie in 2010 was Tomorrow, When the War Began which was the Australian version of Red Dawn! 🤘🙏🏻
There is an older movie adaptation of this story starring John Wayne as "Rooster". Wayne won an Oscar for his performance. It is also just as engaging as this version yet different enough in tone and style that it makes for good viewing.
Great movie. Jeff is so low key magnificent in just about everything. He is never placed amongst the greatest of his generation of actors and I have no idea why not. Cheers from PEI Canada.
Another great reaction, Jade! I actually preferred this to the original - I think it’s a more complete film, and the cast was fantastic! Thank you for reacting to some of my favorite Westerns… definitely recommend the Spaghetti Westerns too! 🖤
A good neo-western: "Hell or High Water" (2016) Some of the best traditional westerns, ranked IMO: "The Magnificent Seven" (1960 original) "The Outlaw Josey Wales" (1976) "Breakheart Pass" (1975) "The Shootist" (1976) "El Dorado" (1966) "The Professionals" (1966) "The Long Riders" (1980) "The Wild Bunch" (1969)
First time watching one of your reactions. Great stuff! Also, if you're looking to explore more westerns (especially worthy remakes), I'd like to toss, "The Magnificent Seven" in the suggestion box. The original is classic western cinema, but whenever I watch "True Grit" I always watch it as well, almost as a companion piece.
Hailee Steinfeld gave a remarkable performance as Mattie. And it's obvious Hailee studied Kim Darby's, Mattie character from the original "True Grit". I hope that you get to watch the original film and we get to share it with you. Thanks for the great reaction MJ and I'm always looking forward to your next flicker show! 🎥🍿😊
Western/Sci-Fi: Firefly/Serenity. Yes, Firefly was a tv series, but only likee half a season, so it is a mini-series. Serenity is the movie that ted up loose ends.
Mattie Ross really was made of steel, wasn't she? Hailee Steinfeld did such a good job in the role. The two men whom Mattie talked to at the wild west show at the end of the film were Cole Younger and Frank James. They were actual outlaws, members of the James gang, whose best-known member was Jesse James. Cole and Frank actually did have a wild west show for a while, starting in 1903. The Coen Brothers directed this version of True Grit. Some other Coen Brothers movies you might want to react to: The Big Lebowski Fargo No Country for Old Men O Brother, Where Art Thou? Raising Arizona Each is an excellent film, ranging from comedy to serious drama. No Country for Old Men is considered by many to be a modern western, so it would fit your theme.
Jade, since you've been reacting to Western films lately, another one to check out is Quigley Down Under. As the name suggests, it's a Western-style film set in the Australian Outback
Great reaction! I appreciate the fact you have been reacting to westerns when few do. Keeping that in mind, Young Guns, Lonesome Dove, Quigley Down Under and Appaloosa are some good ones you might enjoy.
Jeff Bridges is great in "The Big Lebowski" if you'd like to see more of him. "Dances With Wolves" the best set in that period. Oscar winning film. I'd watch the directors edit, adds a bit more context to a few scenes. And adds a just stunningly beautiful scene as well. Patgonia in South America has some absolutely beautiful landscape. Especially the West Coast imo. There are places in the mountains that remind a lot of people of Austria.
I enjoyed your reaction. Thanks! Since you asked for movie suggestions, here are some movies I consider excellent: "Body Heat," "Contact," "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951 NOT the 2008 remake), “The Dead Zone,” "Deja Vu," “Enemy Mine,” “Fahrenheit 451,” "Forbidden Planet," "Frequency," "Gandhi," "Ghost," "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly," "The Green Mile," "Highlander," "It Happened One Night," "Little Big Man," "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance," “The Man on the Flying Trapeze” (only 65 min.), "The Matrix," "Miracle on 34th Street (1947 NOT the remake)," "Mississippi Burning," "North by Northwest," "Once Upon a Time in the West," "The Pink Panther," "Psycho," "Rear Window," "The Right Stuff," "Rio Bravo," "Some Like it Hot," "Stalag 17," "The Thing," "The Time Machine (1960 version)," "Topper," "Vertigo," "Zero Dark Thirty," "Zodiac"
In US and probably Australian courts the law enforcement officers are often called upon to testify what they saw and experienced and the details of a case.
"High Noon," "The Big Country," "Giant" and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance" are four classic westerns that turn the genre upside down and relook at the tropes of the genre. Who are the heroes and who are the real villains... or maybe both sides?
@@Dave-hb7lx Only because she is young-ish and when certain people only recommend the remake or modern adaptation of a novel rather than the initial movie, then that's what she watches.
I most certainly do not only do remakes, I listen to the comments and what they suggest which they specified the 2010 version so I obliged as I hadn't seen either!
Makes no difference to me whether I watch an original or remake it mostly comes down to what the commenters would like to see and if you scroll through the comments of the last few videos you will see all the specifications of people requesting the 2010 version or the "Coen brothers version" and thus I oblige 😊
@@MovieJoob Absolutely! Now, if you do some digging and see there is more than one version of a film, you can always watch the others (if the mood takes you) on your own time or do a reaction video. I'm not a huge fan of remakes, especially when the originals are good. But I really enjoyed this version. The Coen Brothers are talented filmmakers and the performances in this were great. I'd recommend checking out the original as well. John Wayne plays Rooster and he also does a great job with the role as does the rest of the cast.
The horse was dead, it just didn't know it yet. It was having a heart attack, and heat stroke. A horse can literally be ridden to death, they will completely exhaust themselves and dehydrate themselves to the point of heart failure and will not stop if pushed by the rider. There is no saving a horse that is in such a state, not even with modern veterinary medicine, and certainly not 150 years ago. He did it a kind favor by ending what would have been a very painful death at the hands of vermin and predators.
I'm an old timer now, and the first "True Grit" was always one of my favorite westerns (despite the fact that I cannot stand John Wayne as a person). But I think this remake is definitely a better movie.
It’s also a shame that Hailee Steinfeld was nominated for best SUPPORTING actress, and not best actress. Her character IS the main character of the movie.
All Cohen brothers movie should be watched! This is good as the original. My fave movie of theirs is their first, the movie that came from a fake trailer! Blood Simple!
I watched the original True Grit starring John Wayne for years and saw this version for the first time a month ago. It’s good but the OG is better. Thanks for reacting to it though, always looking for a reason to come back on watch your vids. But there’s a few John Wayne westerns you’d probably like such as Eldorado and The Sons of Katy Elder

I have to admit, while John Wayne's original is a masterpiece, this remake was absolutely amazing. Hailee stole the show for sure but what a cast. Hard to believe this was 14 years ago!!

And yes I'd love to check out the original as well now!!
Some other Coen Brothers movies you might want to react to:
The Big Lebowski
Fargo
No Country for Old Men
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Raising Arizona
Each is an excellent film, ranging from comedy to serious drama. No Country for Old Men is considered by many to be a modern western, so it would fit your theme.
I knew before you watched this you would enjoy it, lol. One of my personal favs. You did a good job.
Thank you so much!! I absolutely loved it!
Such a great watch I'm so glad I experienced it!!
I live less than an hour from Fort Smith, where the movie starts. It really beautiful country. A river, woods, farmland.
Jade, since you've been reacting to Western films lately, another one to check out is Quigley Down Under. As the name suggests, it's a Western-style film set in the Australian Outback
Idk what other Coen Brother films have you seen but i love this one just as much as many of their films.
Great reaction! I appreciate the fact you have been reacting to westerns when few do. Keeping that in mind, Young Guns, Lonesome Dove, Quigley Down Under and Appaloosa are some good ones you might enjoy.
Thank you so much for joining me with my journey into Westerns!!
And thank you for the great suggestions!!
@@MovieJoob No problem at all.
Definitely recommend Quigley Down Under. It's a great movie and I think people would love to see an Aussie's reaction to it!
As always Jade❤ great reaction.... Another great remake of an older Western is 3:10 to Yuma.,.😊
Thank you so very much Ray!! 🙌
And yes I did react to it, that's up on my channel already! Hope you enjoy ❤️
Coen brothers always have great side characters
Jeff Bridges is great in "The Big Lebowski" if you'd like to see more of him. "Dances With Wolves" the best set in that period. Oscar winning film. I'd watch the directors edit, adds a bit more context to a few scenes. And adds a just stunningly beautiful scene as well.
Patgonia in South America has some absolutely beautiful landscape. Especially the West Coast imo. There are places in the mountains that remind a lot of people of Austria.
In the book the Indian is allowed to speak before the hanging, and the crowd applauds what he has to say.
"You Display Great Poise."
😜
I enjoyed your reaction. Thanks! Since you asked for movie suggestions, here are some movies I consider excellent:
"Body Heat,"
"Contact,"
"The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951 NOT the 2008 remake),
“The Dead Zone,”
"Deja Vu,"
“Enemy Mine,”
“Fahrenheit 451,”
"Forbidden Planet,"
"Frequency,"
"Gandhi,"
"Ghost,"
"The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,"
"The Green Mile,"
"Highlander,"
"It Happened One Night,"
"Little Big Man,"
"The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance,"
“The Man on the Flying Trapeze” (only 65 min.),
"The Matrix,"
"Miracle on 34th Street (1947 NOT the remake),"
"Mississippi Burning,"
"North by Northwest,"
"Once Upon a Time in the West,"
"The Pink Panther,"
"Psycho,"
"Rear Window,"
"The Right Stuff,"
"Rio Bravo,"
"Some Like it Hot,"
"Stalag 17,"
"The Thing,"
"The Time Machine (1960 version),"
"Topper,"
"Vertigo,"
"Zero Dark Thirty,"
"Zodiac"
One of the best remakes of a movie ever. Arguably better than the original.
Not even close.
not by a long damn shot...
@@Big_BadaBomIt’s better by a country mile. This is closer to the book and is far less hokey with its acting.
@@thomaspappalardo7589 couldn't understand a word bridges said.....didn't have the heart of the original
In US and probably Australian courts the law enforcement officers are often called upon to testify what they saw and experienced and the details of a case.
The original is my second favruite westerns and this is one of the best remakes of all time
"High Noon," "The Big Country," "Giant" and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance" are four classic westerns that turn the genre upside down and relook at the tropes of the genre. Who are the heroes and who are the real villains... or maybe both sides?
@@Dave-hb7lx Only because she is young-ish and when certain people only recommend the remake or modern adaptation of a novel rather than the initial movie, then that's what she watches.
Thank you so much for the suggestions!
Heck, the story "A Star Is Born" has been re-imagined multiple times over the years. Most of them are excellent. Either way, you do solid reactions, Jade. Keep it up. 😀👍
Yes, I knew you'd love this! Great reaction.😋
Thank you so much!! I really did enjoy it!!
It's time to all pitch in and get Jade a cowboy hat and outfit for her journey through the American west. This is so enjoyable; thank you for going down this road and bringing us along.🐴🤠
Well thank YOU for coming along this journey with me!! I'm loving it!
And hahaha need me a cowboy getup 🤠
This movie is rare.... In being a remake that was as great as the original.
26:29 when she fell in the water all the powder got wet
Ohh of course!!
I sure hope you are able to find a way to watch the Deadwood series. You’ll love it.
Great reaction! I suggest the mini series, Lonesome Dove for the quintessential story of the American West.
John Wayne did 2 movies with this character. Rooster Cogburn and True Grit.
I'm an old timer now, and the first "True Grit" was always one of my favorite westerns (despite the fact that I cannot stand John Wayne as a person). But I think this remake is definitely a better movie.
It's a shame that both Jeff and Hailee didn't get their Oscar they were nominated for they lost to The Kings Speech and The Fighter respectively
Tongue meat keeps you fed for a good long while.
Just like croc meat, beef, goat, and salmon
They should cast you as Mattie Ross in the Aussie version . . . You could pull it off . . .
Elvis and Olivia Hussey were supposed to be costars in the original
I definitely want to check out the original too!! Sounds awesome!
And thank you for the suggestions!
This version is closer to the novel that the movies are based on. The original with John Wayne was tailored for him, and many things were changed.
This version isn't too bad. I prefer the John Wayne version myself. Love the reactions Jade!
Great reaction! I love your reactions! How about,
Reign Over Me with Adam Sandler!
Cinderella man, with Russell Crowe and Rene Zellweger, Seven Pounds with Will Smith and
Collateral Beauty with Will Smith!
I have to admit, while John Wayne's original is a masterpiece, this remake was absolutely amazing. Hailee stole the show for sure but what a cast. Hard to believe this was 14 years ago!!
I very much want to see the original as well now!!
And yeah my gods Hailee nailed it!!
@MovieJoob Original is very "hokie", definitely a 70s western...but its pretty good. Worth a watch Joob!
The more I watch the Coen Bros. True Grit, the more I like it. I think I prefer the 2010 one to the 1969 version now.
Oh woah that is so cool!! I definitely want to check out the original as well but this one was fantastic!
@MovieJoob My name is Ray, and I live in Fairbanks, Alaska. I like your reaction style!
I suggest the 1972 John Wayne Movie " The Cowboys " and also John Wayne's last movie 1976 " The Shootist "
I like that back ground but also you should watch the original John Wayne Movie
Superb acting -- what a cast! What a great story! I wish Hailee Steinfeld would do more movies... keep up the reactions.
Can't wait to see what you do next~!
I completely agree it was so fantastic!! I loved it!
Thank you so much for the support!!
Such a good movie with very few reactions
This was a fine one
I'm so glad you enjoyed!! Thank you so much for watching!
29:20 yup, Jade's definitely Australian ;D
The original with John Wayne is pretty good too.
I really look forward to watching the original too!!
Texas Rangers and US Marshals:
"The Highwaymen" (2019) *True Story*
"A Perfect World" (1993) directed by Clint Eastwood
"The Fugitive" (1993)
"US Marshals" (1998)
Hi Jade hope you are having an great and awesome weekend ❤
Same to you as always John!!
Thank you so much!!
You should check out the original with John Wayne 👍🏻👍🏻
Resisting J. Joobs videos is fudel.
On an unrelated topic: have you ever touched a crocodile?Ö_Ö
I live in a gator/croc free world, I have to know!
Hahaha I hope you enjoyed!!
And yes I have although it was a baby croc at a zoo and the zookeeper allowed us to touch it!
Watch the real original True grit. This one can't compare to the original. I hate when they do remakes ✌️❤️
The kill bill series is worth a watch
This is an excellent movie, but I still prefer the original with John Wayne as Cogburn and Glenn Campbell as Le Beuf. It has a different ending that I prefer.
Not accurate to the book though.
Good movie. A different feel from the original 1969 version ..but I enjoy it.
Thanks for sharing, Jade! 😊
PS: keep warm down in th southern hemisphere! It's been in the 90's (about 32c) up here in the TN mountains....
The Coen Brothers added their own quirky aesthetic, but the overall story here is closer to the source book.
@@dan_hitchman007 I agree. And it's most DEFINITELY a Coen bros.movie! 😅
Ooh stay cool up there!! It's only the end of the first month of Winter and I'm already over it and ready for Spring hahahha!!
I look forward to checking out the original as well!!
@@MovieJoob It's definitely a different vibe than the Coen Brothers' adaptation, but also an interesting take on the novel in and of itself, Jade.
Since you like horses so much how about watching a true story called pursuit of Honor with Don Johnson
Check out the original with John Wayne.
