- Bill Watrous and Bob McChesney play Duet #23 from "28 Vignettes for Two Trombones" by Richard J. Fote. Book available at bobmcchesney DOT COM.
The composer Richard J. Fote is a student of Emory Remington and a graduate of the Eastman School of Music. He has penned these 28 enjoyable duets for trombonists. Designed for the advanced high school and college level student, they employ a wide variety of styles, keys, rhythmic patterns, shifting tonalities, modes, meters and articulations to broaden the student's experience. They can be performed on two tenor trombones (F attachment not necessary). Each of the 28 Vignettes for Two Trombones is unique and fun to play. The collection includes swing, classical, and modern style duets.
Always wonderful hearing these guys play, either together or separately. RIP Bill Watrous. Thanks for all the trombone classics.
You won't hear No. 23 played better than that! Beautiful.
You really won't. It makes me sad that there will never be another player like Bill again.
Watrous is a Freak! He never runs out of air! It can't all be circular breathing, can it? Sounds great Bob.
+Patrick Hall I know he does not smoke, drink, and runs daily to keep fit.
I was a pretty accomplished Trombonist many years ago, read and played in Bass, Tenor, and Treble clefs, but always struggled with high range. Actually met Bill back in the late 70's. Continued to play for a bit more, but finally acknowledged that no amount of practicing would ever bring me close to the calibre of these musicians. Gave up and used my energy to lift weights. Music is a gift, no amount of practicing can every surpass natural gift. Just look at some of the youngsters and their respective talent these days. I do however miss playing Trombone, but the frustration and stress it brought me was just not worth it.
I've played with Bill on a couple occasions. Genuine fellow, so kind, humble, incredible player! I have the greatest respect for him. And tomorrow night I get to meet and play with Bob McChesney. Two Tbone Monsters.
Watrous and McChesney ARE and always been monsters on the trombone!! Hearing them makes me want to throw MY trombone off a cliff!!
No man! We are only ourselves, and when we play it's music. That's what counts imo.
nah - just learn from them and practice harder :)
RIP Bill
Dick Fote was my teacher at SUNY Fredonia in the mid-60s (I was on Euphonium then) but I was never aware of these. Gotta find them!
wow bill and bob !!! excellent!
Good playing, guys--and congrats to Richard for having these wonderful pieces shepherded to publication!
Slow & sweet-aaaahhhh!
Beautiful sounds! The effortless range and technique are inspiring!
Fabuloso! Thank you.....
Wonderful!
The two legends! XD
Bill Watrous is insane. He still plays perfectly in his 70s. i did notice that he seems to play slightly off center on this video. Is it my imagination or has his embouchure always been like this?
I noticed he skimps on slide movement and seems to correct pitch by lipping...
Good Lord. BoneGods! Together. And Friday I'm supposed to play with Bob McChesney. I'm practicing now, but I don't think it will be enough!
maybe call in sick?
Parabéns mestres!
Amazing it!

I just love hearing these legends play this easy going stuff instead of the million notes per piece they are known for. Watrous was pretty flat on the D, fourth measure from the end, but I'll let him slide on it. (Sorry!)
Watrous vs. Urbie? I'd have to go with Bill.......
I love them both, but always preferred Urbies sound just a little more.
O som do Watrous tá estranho.
and I thought it was improvised
Super coupe de cheveux Bill, change rien !!!
The one on the left sounds like his trombone had an air leak!
What are you talking about?
that's Bill. LOL. yes more air than tone...
