Same here. Watching ONE Muay Thai got me back into Muay Thai after taking a break for over a decade. But now that I can find traditional Muay Thai (or even rws) I'd rather watch things other than One. Also I don't like supporting them because of how they treated Iman
I do miss the way fights were like before the ONE era, with the Wai Kru, 5 rounds, and the old look of Rajadamnern and Lumpinee. I loved watching fights and highlights from a YT channel called “Muay Ties,” who used to be pretty big, but they haven’t posted for 5 years now, probably because of all the changes. The new style/format has so much bright lights, hyping, and other obvious influences from the modern west that it just feels obvious its catering to western viewers. I hope the art doesn’t change too much in the near future and looses its soul.
Every sports changes through the decades… the muay thai you knew hasn’t always been the same, stagnation is death, everything is constantly changing in the physicality including your own body, cells….
ONE fc actually wants to have it both ways. it wants to call their fights Muay Thai fights but also modifies their rules to erode very prominent aspects of the sport.
Well you have to consider the business aspect of the sport as well… If they don’t make money, how will they keep on putting on shows for you? I think people are just resistant to change, for instance, I don’t see anyone complaining on how gambling affects muay thai in thailand
One is it's own thing and it does affect how people perceive what muay thai is. It makes me think of how people think boxing is about knock outs and when that doesn't happen they don't find it entertaining, or how they don't understand how the other person won without a knock down even though they were knocked down. (ie Joseph Parker vs Zhilei Zhang). It's the difference between something made for what somebody who only watches would enjoy verse someone who creates would enjoy. This sort of makes me think of making music for musicians verse making music to chart. It's not so much elitism as much that you're a muay thai fighter and historian and you're going to see things through that lens which is understandable.
If you live in the west it’s very hard to find/watch Traditional Muay Thai, On TV or Live Events. When i was in Thailand i loved watching the live festival MuayThai shows, I did enjoy watching One Live at Lumpinee. PS I had my first MuayThai fight for Petchrungruang back in May 🙂
I love the Nabokov analogy. And I fully get what you mean, because I notice it too when I watch the matches: it doesn't "feel" the same. It's like I'm watching a kickboxing match augmented with Muay Thai strikes, absent the classic Muay artistry. But I will still watch ONE Muay Thai matches, because I still like it as kickboxing. That's just me and at the same time I also welcome it that you don't watch ONE for the reasons you gave. There's no snobbery or elitism there.

As a casual of muay thai, who got into Muay thai because of ONE. I binged about 5 traditional muay thai fights that are not from any of the big names/goats. Not gonna lie, I can see why One took off. The real muay thai fight was very slow pace and it was like a dance. I just think it's hard for someone who doesn't knowledge about scoring and tradition. But I can relate with your feelings when it comes to mma/boxing/bjj. All I care about is who is the best at winning and being skillful which can sometimes means being risk adverse and "boring".
I'm sure you already know this, but be really careful with that infection. I got an infection in thailand once, I thought it would be fine. When I got home 2 weeks later, the doctor told me that if I didn't get antibiotics, I would have lost my leg withing another 2 weeks. Lesson learned XD

So, basically ONE FC Muay Thai is junk food of the artform. I can acknowledge my reason for tuning in is for the explosive moments and highlights, but it's not the point of the art. To be fair, they're staging Thai fights in a cage w/ mma gloves on, sublety isn't on the menu for them.
Minimumweight champions (and lower weight class champions in boxing in general) get overlooked by the popular media extremely regularly, despite how incredibly technical they are. For instance, Ricardo Lopez was basically a boxing textbook, but he isn't as well-known as the other Mexican boxing luminaries of the higher weight classes (e.g., Chavez Sr., Canelo). Part of the reason may actually be because most great boxers in the lower weight classes are not well-known in (and do not hail from) the Americas, and are mostly from countries like Japan, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, and so on; that may be why they get less media attention, and are less popular worldwide. The other part may be to do with a cultural fascination with the heavier weight classes that exists in the West ("baddest man on the planet"); sadly, what gets reflected in Western combat sports media does plays a dictating influence in terms of global trends and preferences, and so we don't end up knowing that much about these extremely talented fighters by default.
I get that you don't like ONE. I have my own issues with ONE but what I enjoy about your videos is your appreciation for the legends. Watching you react to old fights is great. Especially Karuhat who's one of my favorites. Superlek however is also one of my favorites. Even before ONE so if I was to ask for your opinion on Superlek I'm not necessarily asking you about ONE. If someone asked me about Samart my response wouldn't be "I don't watch boxing" because he happened to also compete in boxing. Anyone calling you names just for not liking something are clearly in the wrong but I'd be lying if I wasn't at least a little curious about your opinions on certain fighters and why you don't give current fighters the same attention as the oldschool ones.

I don't know what others think but i get a sense that One doesn’t care enough for their fighters. Apart from some big names, it feels like entertainment fodder. I stopped watching them for a year then looked for the Haggerty vs Superlek fight, and if anything it seems even worse with slugfest. Some of these fighters are hardly going to be able to move when they are older if they keep up this pace. And I'm not sure if One will support any of them after they retire.
There goes to chance to make it big and fight in One. Jokes aside, thank you for the detailed explanation (not that I was one of the people asking). I’ve been wary of One since they started holding regular events at Lumpini while disregarding the Boxing Authority of Thailands remarks on them not offering Muay Thai and then how they treated Iman Barlow and now Mikey Musimeci.
I would be very interested in your suggestions for how to watch real 5 round muay thai! I watch one's Friday fights occasionally because it's easily accessible to me in the US and is in English, but I love the narrative arc of longer fights instead of trying for a knockout asap. Love Onefc. Buttttt it would be great if they could just at least allow more clinch work. The clinch gets broken up way too quick. Besides that i think Onefc muay thai is great but maybe they could call it one muay thai rules or something? Idk. Dont think there is any reason to avoid watching any fights. Sylivia, I am fan of the body of work you are doing to preserve Muai thai and its legacy. I feel it would be good to see whether there is a historic relationship between The South Indian martial art called Kalaripayattu with Muai thai. Kalaripayattu was not only used to train army but also the warriors were employed by the landlords to settle their disputes and whose Kalaripayattu warrior won, they will win the dispute. In 1804 the British banned it realizing how strong the martial art it was and so many techniques and its charm was lost over the years and today it is practiced with very less vigour and interest compared with Muai thai. However Muai thai has developed its techniques when compared to its past because of Thai kingdom support and no ban. @@ennigmaaI think it’s got some slugging but it’s not just for sluggers. I sometimes wonder if part of the slugging problem is because a lot of the ONE fights are done back to back or at the same event with kick-boxing matches, so maybe this dilutes a bit I don’t know.

ONE is a mass market product. I can totally understand some muay thai tradionalists not loving it, especially here in Thailand. Yeah, there's a massive appeal to going to events where you know everyone there or get to watch at the gym with Samart. However, like you said yourself, these little regional events (and even the big ones) aren't broadcast that well and are really made for a different type of consumtion. I think you're comparing apples and oranges.

One FC is getting MT fighters paid so i agree with the buisness of them helping MT fighter make a living. I get it though because you respect the art and culture, and buisness never really respects it, It sucks.
Keep in mind that everything you're told about ONE comes from the business itself, and most reports that come not from them aren't very positive. A very few of theor fighters do get paid a lot, but the majority don't get paid an amazing amount and, more importantly, don't fight often enough for the increased purse to maintained significance in their livelihood. I'd wager I know more ONE-contracted fighters (and their situations), personally, than most casual fans of the show do.

I love traditional Muay thai but to watch an entire card with wai Krus at the start of each fight really kills all the action especially live. also way too slow usually the first three rounds are super slow. we all know that’s purely for the gamblers. that’s sort of why one has changed things around. of course the MMA gloves and basically zero Clinch, make it more like a brawl and generally speaking most untrained find the Clinch extremely boring. Traditional Muaythai needs to be tweaked or it will never catch the attention and grow the sport. I’m not saying one is the solution but something needs to be done. It does seem like a lot more promotions are going to go three round format now which is good.
Once you understand narrative scoring the "boring first 3 rounds" are actually very interesting and entertaining when fighters are well matched. In my opinion not everything needs to grow and go global.
@@8limbsUs for you, perhaps but i would say 90% of even people that train find it extremely boring. the goal should be to grow the sport so that fighters can earn more money. how many world champions are famous or can retire from traditional muay thai? close to 0. how many still have to hold pads at gyms or need to open their own gym ? you know this better than anyone. yodkhunpon elbow hunter, nong-o pre one fc is a perfect example of that. saenchai, karuhat etc. also at 9:10 (sorry just watching the rest of this), most thai promoters are in it for themselves, the promoters make most of the money and the gym, the fighters dont get alot so i dont see how the system benefits them. in one fc they are making much more and there are nice bonuses. look at seksan as another example, post one-fc building a gym for students to train at and is making a much bigger impact imo than fighting on sor sommai promotions.

Among those fighters many left and have opened their owns gyms due to finances, arguments with the owners taking money! shocking. some are former world champions, they dont have a retirement fund and were extremely underpaid, so yes. and yes i have been around promoters. perhaps you are a promoter yourself? i see plenty of promoters buying out fighters from other gyms, driving nice cars and wearing nice clothes. they seem to be doing great for themselves, it doesnt necessary help the fighters. not in all cases though. as for starting slow, it is absolutely for the gamblers. fighters do close to nothing in round one and they also dont clinch. when you change it to 3 rounds the action starts right away. one absolutely is not rubbish, it is just a modified version of traditional MT. superlek knocking out haggerty just recently is not rubbish. that is pure skill and talent. sounds like ONE bothers you. like it or not, ONE is putting thai fighters on a global platform and helping them financially, i dont see why anyone who be opposed to that. thanks for supporting my argument. mayweather is one of the most boring offensive fighters to watch and puts people to sleep. yes very defensively gifted. 12 rounds of watching him jab people and clinch and hold whenever he is in danger is the reason why boxing as a sport was not growing. you can use the exact same example in a 5 round fight vs a 12 round boxing fight. now take a look at the shorter round fights mayweather had in exhibition format. they are far more entertaining because the rounds are shorter. same happens in jiu jitsu with 10-15minute matches vs 5-10 minute matches.

It's really scary how our time and attention is the product for these major social media companies. We are sold to advertisers... Also sad/silly that people view your not wanting to engage in viewing promotions like ONE as a personal attack.
I've watched One for awhile and enjoyèd their fights. But lately I find myself looking for muay thai fights before the One era. The skill and strategy involved is wonderful to see. The first rounds are for gauging the opponent and then going to work. One fc however looks more like a "wham bam, thank you mam". Haggerty got knocked out in 49 seconds. Not much to see there. Haggwrty is good, smart fighter and Superlek is always fun to watch. But prioritizing the knock out and pace over strategy and skill feels like a waste of potential to me. Potential of the fighters and potential of an amazing fight. But attention spans are shorter nowadays. The public has no more time for the build up and the subtleties.
So, ONE offered fighters a very well paying job and picks off a lot of the best fighters the gyms in Thailand produce in exclusive contracts, for fights that are not traditional muay thai, despite being marketed as muay thai. And due to the rich sponsorship and international audience ONE took over what is seen as muay thai. And that again slowly ruins traditional muay thai because all the kids who train today are just looking to get a ONE contract. Drained of the best talent and with ONE being the international public face of the sport, traditional muay thai is an art that is going to die when the current generation of trainers retire. I can understand why you don't want to watch. My background is a very different sport, dressage riding. There is something very similar going on in high level competitive dressage riding, which in the last 30 decades has also become a perverted show circus with rich sponsors and riding that has absolutely zero to do with traditonal/classical training and showing.
One overhype their fighters so much I like Superlek and Rodtang but the way they were promoting Haggerty was crazy he got steamrolled twice and they kept saying he could “beat the Thais” said thais were one stadium champion, a 40 year old Nong-o and a 36 year old Sam-A what an achievement Yodwicha and Daniel Rodriguez, Lamnamoonlek etc get overlooked because of these causal one fans
Lol Rodtang and Superlek was big before One. and Haggerty is high level nak muay. I agree that One brings alot of casual to the scene of muay thai, but that is because it is on the big stage globaly now.

Plus they allow for some (very little) ring movement vs other promotions that force fighters to only move forward and trade. I'm happy that RWS found kind of a decent middle ground between main stream entertainment and traditional Muay Thai. I was so disappointed that One doesn't even have the fighters do their Ram Muay (at least most of the time).
Maybe people are so defensive because ONE is their frame of reference. ONE was my entry point into becoming a Muay Thai fan. I already followed American MMA, and ONE promotes themselves in the same way, but sort of pulls off a bait-and-switch where you watch the MMA foghts, and they mix in the Muay Thai, and you want to know more about it (specially since most of their their MMA fights aren't great) This AMMA-ification worked in terms of marketing, but by now I can see how this cheapens the sport. This "chat-gpt" analogy is apt, and was on full display on their Denver card. They were trying to sell the idea of the organizarion as a content-creating, knockout machine to investors above all else. And what they did to Mikey Musumeci was insane. The business model of burning investor funding perpetually doesn't seem sustainable, though. Maybe things will change if investment dries up.

You gotta understand that trying to explain to westerners, who mostly only understand muay thai as a ruleset, that one is not real muay thai sounds kinda snobby out of context. It comes off as arguing for "souls" and "essences" of true muay thai and i dont know but all that seems rather arbitrary.
Accommodating the western-centric attitutes of Westerners who don't want to have to learn anything or put forth effort to understanding something that isn't directly FOR THEM isn't something I bother myself much about. I totally hear you Sylvie the rule set of ONE has forced a ton of the highest caliber fighters to adjust their Style for the particular ruleset which has caused many of them to get knocked out horribly take devastating losses and a ton of damage. I hope that ONE championship can use these sacrifices to promote the sport of Muay Thai and change the rule set toward a more traditional style in the future.

Minimumweight champions (and lower weight class champions in boxing in general) get overlooked by the popular media extremely regularly, despite how incredibly technical they are. For instance, Ricardo Lopez was basically a boxing textbook, but he isn't as well-known as the other Mexican boxing luminaries of the higher weight classes (e.g., Chavez Sr., Canelo).
Part of the reason may actually be because most great boxers in the lower weight classes are not well-known in (and do not hail from) the Americas, and are mostly from countries like Japan, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, and so on; that may be why they get less media attention, and are less popular worldwide. The other part may be to do with a cultural fascination with the heavier weight classes that exists in the West ("baddest man on the planet"); sadly, what gets reflected in Western combat sports media does plays a dictating influence in terms of global trends and preferences, and so we don't end up knowing that much about these extremely talented fighters by default.

I get that you don't like ONE. I have my own issues with ONE but what I enjoy about your videos is your appreciation for the legends. Watching you react to old fights is great. Especially Karuhat who's one of my favorites. Superlek however is also one of my favorites. Even before ONE so if I was to ask for your opinion on Superlek I'm not necessarily asking you about ONE. If someone asked me about Samart my response wouldn't be "I don't watch boxing" because he happened to also compete in boxing. Anyone calling you names just for not liking something are clearly in the wrong but I'd be lying if I wasn't at least a little curious about your opinions on certain fighters and why you don't give current fighters the same attention as the oldschool ones.

I don't know what others think but i get a sense that One doesn’t care enough for their fighters. Apart from some big names, it feels like entertainment fodder. I stopped watching them for a year then looked for the Haggerty vs Superlek fight, and if anything it seems even worse with slugfest. Some of these fighters are hardly going to be able to move when they are older if they keep up this pace. And I'm not sure if One will support any of them after they retire.
There goes to chance to make it big and fight in One.

I watch one's Friday fights occasionally because it's easily accessible to me in the US and is in English, but I love the narrative arc of longer fights instead of trying for a knockout asap. Really like these run casts :)

Dont think there is any reason to avoid watching any fights. Its good to get exposure to different stuff but everyone likes what they like anyways so really nobody cares at the end of the day
Sylivia, I am fan of the body of work you are doing to preserve Muai thai and its legacy. I feel it would be good to see whether there is a historic relationship between The South Indian martial art called Kalaripayattu with Muai thai. Kalaripayattu was not only used to train army but also the warriors were employed by the landlords to settle their disputes and whose Kalaripayattu warrior won, they will win the dispute. In 1804 the British banned it realizing how strong the martial art it was and so many techniques and its charm was lost over the years and today it is practiced with very less vigour and interest compared with Muai thai. However Muai thai has developed its techniques when compared to its past because of Thai kingdom support and no ban. ONE is a mass market product. I can totally understand some muay thai tradionalists not loving it, especially here in Thailand. Yeah, there's a massive appeal to going to events where you know everyone there or get to watch at the gym with Samart. However, like you said yourself, these little regional events (and even the big ones) aren't broadcast that well and are really made for a different type of consumtion. I think you're comparing apples and oranges.

I get it though because you respect the art and culture, and buisness never really respects it, It sucks.
Keep in mind that everything you're told about ONE comes from the business itself, and most reports that come not from them aren't very positive. A very few of theor fighters do get paid a lot, but the majority don't get paid an amazing amount and, more importantly, don't fight often enough for the increased purse to maintained significance in their livelihood. I'd wager I know more ONE-contracted fighters (and their situations), personally, than most casual fans of the show do.

I love traditional Muay thai but to watch an entire card with wai Krus at the start of each fight really kills all the action especially live. also way too slow usually the first three rounds are super slow. we all know that’s purely for the gamblers. that’s sort of why one has changed things around. of course the MMA gloves and basically zero Clinch, make it more like a brawl and generally speaking most untrained find the Clinch extremely boring. Traditional Muaythai needs to be tweaked or it will never catch the attention and grow the sport. I’m not saying one is the solution but something needs to be done. It does seem like a lot more promotions are going to go three round format now which is good.
Once you understand narrative scoring the "boring first 3 rounds" are actually very interesting and entertaining when fighters are well matched. In my opinion not everything needs to grow and go global.
@@8limbsUs for you, perhaps but i would say 90% of even people that train find it extremely boring. the goal should be to grow the sport so that fighters can earn more money. how many world champions are famous or can retire from traditional muay thai? close to 0. how many still have to hold pads at gyms or need to open their own gym ? you know this better than anyone. yodkhunpon elbow hunter, nong-o pre one fc is a perfect example of that. saenchai, karuhat etc. also at 9:10 (sorry just watching the rest of this), most thai promoters are in it for themselves, the promoters make most of the money and the gym, the fighters dont get alot so i dont see how the system benefits them. in one fc they are making much more and there are nice bonuses. look at seksan as another example, post one-fc building a gym for students to train at and is making a much bigger impact imo than fighting on sor sommai promotions.

Among those fighters many left and have opened their owns gyms due to finances, arguments with the owners taking money! shocking. some are former world champions, they dont have a retirement fund and were extremely underpaid, so yes. and yes i have been around promoters. perhaps you are a promoter yourself? i see plenty of promoters buying out fighters from other gyms, driving nice cars and wearing nice clothes. they seem to be doing great for themselves, it doesnt necessary help the fighters. not in all cases though.
as for starting slow, it is absolutely for the gamblers. fighters do close to nothing in round one and they also dont clinch. when you change it to 3 rounds the action starts right away. one absolutely is not rubbish, it is just a modified version of traditional MT. superlek knocking out haggerty just recently is not rubbish. that is pure skill and talent. sounds like ONE bothers you. like it or not, ONE is putting thai fighters on a global platform and helping them financially, i dont see why anyone who be opposed to that.
thanks for supporting my argument. mayweather is one of the most boring offensive fighters to watch and puts people to sleep. yes very defensively gifted. 12 rounds of watching him jab people and clinch and hold whenever he is in danger is the reason why boxing as a sport was not growing. you can use the exact same example in a 5 round fight vs a 12 round boxing fight. now take a look at the shorter round fights mayweather had in exhibition format. they are far more entertaining because the rounds are shorter. same happens in jiu jitsu with 10-15minute matches vs 5-10 minute matches.

It's really scary how our time and attention is the product for these major social media companies. We are sold to advertisers... Also sad/silly that people view your not wanting to engage in viewing promotions like ONE as a personal attack.
I've watched One for awhile and enjoyèd their fights. But lately I find myself looking for muay thai fights before the One era. The skill and strategy involved is wonderful to see. The first rounds are for gauging the opponent and then going to work.
One fc however looks more like a "wham bam, thank you mam". Haggerty got knocked out in 49 seconds. Not much to see there. Haggwrty is good, smart fighter and Superlek is always fun to watch. But prioritizing the knock out and pace over strategy and skill feels like a waste of potential to me. Potential of the fighters and potential of an amazing fight.
But attention spans are shorter nowadays. The public has no more time for the build up and the subtleties.
So, ONE offered fighters a very well paying job and picks off a lot of the best fighters the gyms in Thailand produce in exclusive contracts, for fights that are not traditional muay thai, despite being marketed as muay thai. And due to the rich sponsorship and international audience ONE took over what is seen as muay thai. And that again slowly ruins traditional muay thai because all the kids who train today are just looking to get a ONE contract. Drained of the best talent and with ONE being the international public face of the sport, traditional muay thai is an art that is going to die when the current generation of trainers retire. I can understand why you don't want to watch. My background is a very different sport, dressage riding. There is something very similar going on in high level competitive dressage riding, which in the last 30 decades has also become a perverted show circus with rich sponsors and riding that has absolutely zero to do with traditonal/classical training and showing.
One overhype their fighters so much I like Superlek and Rodtang but the way they were promoting Haggerty was crazy he got steamrolled twice and they kept saying he could “beat the Thais” said thais were one stadium champion, a 40 year old Nong-o and a 36 year old Sam-A what an achievement Yodwicha and Daniel Rodriguez, Lamnamoonlek etc get overlooked because of these causal one fans
Lol Rodtang and Superlek was big before One. and Haggerty is high level nak muay. I agree that One brings alot of casual to the scene of muay thai, but that is because it is on the big stage globaly now.

People who follow One is not the same as people who follow muay thai. Still ONE has good thai fighters on their cards. Now also Panpayak is back.

Plus they allow for some (very little) ring movement vs other promotions that force fighters to only move forward and trade. Maybe people are so defensive because ONE is their frame of reference. ONE was my entry point into becoming a Muay Thai fan. I already followed American MMA, and ONE promotes themselves in the same way, but sort of pulls off a bait-and-switch where you watch the MMA foghts, and they mix in the Muay Thai, and you want to know more about it (specially since most of their their MMA fights aren't great) This AMMA-ification worked in terms of marketing, but by now I can see how this cheapens the sport. This "chat-gpt" analogy is apt, and was on full display on their Denver card. They were trying to sell the idea of the organizarion as a content-creating, knockout machine to investors above all else. And what they did to Mikey Musumeci was insane.
The business model of burning investor funding perpetually doesn't seem sustainable, though. Maybe things will change if investment dries up.

I totally hear you Sylvie the rule set of ONE has forced a ton of the highest caliber fighters to adjust their Style for the particular ruleset which has caused many of them to get knocked out horribly take devastating losses and a ton of damage. I hope that ONE championship can use these sacrifices to promote the sport of Muay Thai and change the rule set toward a more traditional style in the future.
